^^ I'm all for starting him next game but I think that I watched a completely different game than a lot of you. Putting points on the board =/= playing well (although it is a leg up on davis) and the number of INTs =/= the number of poorly thrown balls. He is terrible plain an simple. At least on of his sack should never have happened as he was a mile outside of the pocket and had a day and a half to throw the ball away. While he wasnt as eager to run the ball up the middle every time, he still hasnt rid himself of the habit completely. He just tries to get the ball outside now.
that said, it was a pitiful performance from both quarterbacks and the rest of the season going to be long. 10/24/2005 2:00:29 PM |

The way I look at it:
Both Suck...equally
When Jay gets time to throw... he'll still miss. He sissies the ball up into a high floater, and even on easy, wide open throws.... he floats the ball out there and usually misses.
At least Stone gets the ball there on time and puts muscle into it. He doesn't give the defense as much time to react.... and he also adds the run element.
If they're both going to miss, I'd go with the guy who misses on frozen rope passes and not the guy who floats the ball out there personally 10/24/2005 2:07:51 PM |

^^I would agree with you, but you are the only person who went to the game who does not think Stone played better than Davis. He really only had 3 drives where he didnt move the ball...one was the INT, one was his first drive, and one was the result of 2 dropped passes, both of which would have resulted in first downs.
^Exactly
also, stone didnt look like he was staring down receivers except on the INT, which was a much better catch in the replay than it looked in person.

That's on Courtney Fells profile on Gopack.com. Can we get him out on the football field. He is 6-5 and lightning fast. Hey the last QB we had to wear #4 wasn't so bad?10/24/2005 2:43:45 PM |

^^ Dont get me wrong, I def thought stone played better. I just think that some people in the thread are equating playing better with playing well. He certainly did not play well. On a positive note, some of his problems are correctable and could simply be due to his lack of game experience this season. Lets hope so anyway. 10/24/2005 3:10:28 PM |

Oh I agree that he definately had room for improvement...although he was the victim of some dropped passes. The 2 sacks were from lack of game experience, but after that, he even looked like he was reading defenses and scanning the field for the open receiver....I just want to see if he can reproduce the few drives in between the sacks and the INT this saturday. 10/24/2005 3:16:07 PM |

C/ATT YDS TD INT Davis 15/29 102 0 2 Stone 6/16 136 2 1
Not good, but definitely better, especially considering that at least two passes of Stones were dropped...including an easy one by T.J., and that the INT was actually a good play by the defender rather than just a horrible pass.
What'd Jay do positive for us? Stone threw two TD passes and led us downfield once more to score a FG in limited playing time... 10/24/2005 3:18:40 PM |

Thats a pretty fair assessment. In addition, i think he really needs to work on his passing. He threw quite a few off target (although davis made him look great in this respect). Luckily for him, his receivers bailed him out of a few by making receptions on less than perfect throws. 10/24/2005 3:18:58 PM |

I think some of those off target passes you're talking about were actually misplays by the receiver. That one pass to Lamart Barrett was a damn perfect pass to the open man, but Lamart turned around expecting a short ball (from davis) and had to recover....ball flew over his hands. Oh well I don't care as long as Amato admits that Stone deserves more PT for the rest of this season. At this point, its not about winning now, its about saving the future of this program. 10/24/2005 3:22:10 PM |

^It was also pretty windy. The wind carried what looked like a good deep ball for a TD out of the endzone. 10/24/2005 3:45:46 PM |

Quote : | "The most obvious catalyst for North Carolina State has been freshman tailback Andre Brown, who has rushed for 427 yards in the last two games, victories over Southern Mississippi and at Florida State that have revived the Wolfpack's moribund season.
Just as important to NC State, however, has been quarterback Marcus Stone. For the most part, the redshirt sophomore's statistics are -- searching for a polite adjective here -- interesting. Stone replaced struggling senior Jay Davis and started for the first time against Southern Miss.
In the first half of his starts against the Golden Eagles and the Seminoles, Stone has completed 2 of 14 passes for 25 yards and thrown two interceptions.
In the two second halves, Stone has completed 17 of 29 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. There's one other statistic that's pretty important: 2-0. Overall, the Wolfpack are 4-4 and have a chance to go to a bowl. This is the same team that started so poorly that athletic director Lee Fowler felt compelled to give a vote of confidence to sixth-year coach Chuck Amato.
"I said that two weeks ago that we were looking for something, something," Amato said. "And we felt we had to make the decision to go with Marcus. And players have ignited on that."
Stone believes he has thrown better in the second half in part because of calmer nerves and in part because of the work Brown has done.
"I definitely believe that the running game helps out a lot as far as opening things up for the passing game," Stone said, according to GoPack.com. "Andre Brown has been great running the ball and it's been a lot easier on me when I drop back. It takes a lot of pressure off me."
If Stone plays well in two halves, it will take a lot of pressure off Amato. The Wolfpack must win two of their last three to get to a bowl. " |

Who the hell else is gonna play QB?
Not like we have many choices.
Marcus is only a Soph. Unless someone tears stuff up in training camp, Marcus is going to be the man.
I do believe Jay was the better QB... but being a RS Senior, they realized he wasn't going to win games, and they might as well give Stone his shot. I doubt they would have done that if Jay was a Sophmore or Junior

i know the options are slim, i was just saying that b/c Burke was coming in
I want Marcus to be the QB next year esp. if state finishes well....the team will have a lot of confidence with him there
He was ranked really high as a recruit...I think if we continue to get him more time and snaps he can be a good qb for us 11/9/2005 9:00:16 PM |

He's got the tools.. no doubt. Hell, he's got the tools to be one of the most physically gifted in the NCAA's.
He's just got to develop the composure and the brain. I think he's still struggling to grasp the offense... it'll come with time.
If Burke plays better, then by all means, play Burke. 11/9/2005 9:04:53 PM |

yeah, i agree with you PackBacker
This is what espn recruiting tracker says about Burke:
Evaluation: Burke is an accurate, efficient passer that has been extremely productive and accurate throughout his career. Has a quick release and does a good job of seeing the whole field and he makes sound pre-snap reads. Shows good timing and touch on short and intermediate routes. Shows the ability to consistently find his "hot" receiver and beat the blitz. Has good touch on the deep ball and can drop the ball in over coverage. He does not possess an elite arm, but he shows adequate velocity and he gets rid of the ball quickly and avoids unnecessary hits in the pocket. Can beat the rush with his release. Has quick feet, shows good pocket awareness and will buy some extra chances within the pocket. He is an excellent passer on the run especially to his right side. Is a mature, intelligent leader and is a polished passer at this level. He has some of the intangibles that you can't coach and has a natural feel for the game. He is an excellent prospect for a "spread" offense and has operated in a sound offensive scheme at the high school level. Is listed at six-foot-three, but appears shorter than that. He should gain some needed bulk once he enters college and look for his arm strength to improve as well.
Notes: Over the last two seasond Burke completed 312 of 509 passes for 4,954 yards, 58 touchdowns and jsut 11 interceptions... 11/9/2005 11:24:52 PM |

^ Amazingly.
That's really all that counts. It's not as fun as watching Rivers, but if he wins, stick with him.
Hopefully he'll develop more during the offseason and we won't even need Brent Shaeffer. He's got a ways to go, but hopefully Trest can work some magic 1/1/2006 9:36:21 PM |

i'd like to see what burke can do......i know it's only high school but a kid that passes for something like 64 TD and only 5 INT is ridiculously smart with his passes. i'm willing to bet some of those INT were flukes too, where the reciever caused them. wishful thinking here but Justin Burke = NEXT Phillip Rivers??? I also shook his hand at the App State game when he came for a visit...he's a pretty good sized kid for being a senior in high school...meaning he wouldn't be terribly undersized on the football field as a freshman. 1/1/2006 9:44:11 PM |

^Isn't Burke only 6' 2"? That's short for a pocket QB. But still he prolly will not see much time next year. Our hopes are in Marcus Stone's hands...unless we get Shaeffer. 1/1/2006 9:46:35 PM |
