i had a black guy at cookout pull something similar TWICE on me.

he said "my car broke down up the street and me and my wife and this white lady are trying to get home to fayetville, can you spare us money so i can send my wife and the white lady home on the bus?"

my response:

"if you take me to them i'd be glad to give the white lady a ride home"

(but of course that was what i said the second time he said that story to me.

Gah. These people freak me out.
One time a friend and I walked to Shanghai Express to get food really late (I think it was around 2am)... and this guy kept following us. We gave him a dollar just so he'd shut up and leave us alone (they always start with that "i'm a good person, i'd never ask for anything, i'm a good christian... and then you're like, ok. so wtf do you want? and they continue with their "my momma and my wife, we drove up here to go to the doctor and our kids are at home... and our car broke down and we don't have enough $$ for the bus fare back."
Then there's the creepy flannel shirt guy that waits outside the library late at night and follows people to their car.
And I think I saw the hoodie guy... I was going to go to I <3 NY Pizza one night and meet a friend. I parked and proceeded to call and see if they were there yet. All of a sudden this guy walks up to my car and starts beating on my passenger side window... yelling "open up, i gotta talk to ya" ... i was like wtf. So I turn on my car and attempt to speed off w/o hitting the guy (i didn't want him to report a hit and run or something)... as he continues to beat on my car screaming "what, you scared of black people or something?" Needless to say, I stopped going in the area around the library after 9pm for a long time.

But wouldn't it suck if something bad really did happen to you... and you got stuck? And a story like the ones they use was true?

In the end, it's your money and your decision. but be aware that there are plenty of motherfuckers out there who will fuck you over regardless whether you give them money or not (in my opinion, giving them something increases your chances for a bad encounter, as you've established that 1) you have money and 2) you are willing to give them attention, which they crave...especially the crazy ones).

as far as "good karma" goes, again we're talking about the street walkers here, none of whom you or I are able to evaluate for definite need in the two seconds it takes them to ask for help. therefore, you have as good a chance of contributing to a rapist's bank account as you do helping someone who was truly unfortunate. I prefer to give my extra cash to an institution/individual who I KNOW will properly use the funds for good causes, but that's just me.

I hate this douchebag, he's asked me for money 4 times in the past month.
