freedom of speech is all well and good but communicating threats over any medium can be a violation of both law and the rules of student conduct.

maybe I have overly high expectations of students but how can one not understand that threatening people is not a good idea? Were your parents never around to teach you that when you tell someone you're gonna have them killed, crucified, burned at the stake, whatever, you might be going a little overboard? This is a public messageboard. Everyone and their grandma can read it. Threatening someone here is no different than threatening them in the brickyard and if that threat is taken seriously enough to get you dragged in front of someone with power (be that Paul Cousins or the District Court Judge downtown), you're excuse of "it's only TWW" isn't gonna fly terribly far. When you make stupid excuses for your actions, you're acting like a child which will get you nowhere. When adults communicate with other adults, there is a certain level of respect and that respect can get you somewhere. So stop acting like kids and trying to squirm your way out of stupid mistakes with stupid excuses. You can be caught...it's not rocket science. The internet is nowhere near as anonymous as you think it is and most importantly, there are people out there who are not only more powerful than you, they're smarter than you. You may not like it but you'd better repsect it until you can get it changed. Otherwise you'll just be some stupid kid in front of Paul Cousins trying to lie your way out of a drinking ticket.

This whole thing started with a douche RA getting someone in trouble for their face book. People were pissed off at this person (not the first time twwers get pissed at something/someone), and start trash talking. It's pretty harmless. Then Paul Cousins gets all serious and power-trippy (this is how it seems from the Technician write-up at least, i can't see any reason for him to say "I can access your unity accounts, if I had to" or whatever outside of a power trip, but of course, it was taken out of context so who knows what he meant) acting like he is doing society a great favor by reading this stupid message board where people are venting outrage at what was initially a stupid act (the facebook thing).

If people here are threatening someone in a serious manner, we'd probably turn them in ourselves, but this almost never happens. People come here to piss people off, and laugh at what attempts people go to do that. 99.99% of the time, it's not serious at all, and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Further, you can't say that "making lame excuses like 'it's just TWW' is childish" because TWW exists (mostly) for people to be childish.

The fact is that it doesn't matter whether or not he's smarter than a person or a person's smarter than him, what matters is who's in the right. And if you say Cousins is in the right, you're on pretty fucking shaky grounds. Did the students fuck up? Yes. Did Cousins fuck up worse? Yes.

I've always thought the university needs to do a better job of spelling out students' rights.

When I was in student government, we spent quite a bit of time going over the Code of Conduct and trying to figure out how to make some changes. I really don't like the vagaries in it.

i was actually at that meeting last night, and it's not actually paul cousins that sits there and checks every post on the wolfweb, but campus police. what they told us, is that they check the wolfweb for threats and possible signs of violence and the also check AND YES, refer EVERY party listed on the facebook to ALE. they evaluate the severity of the threat and take appropriate action. so whoever's talking shit about paul cousins here might wanna watch out. i'm not the biggest fan of the guy myself since i've ran into some trouble w/him back in the day, but yea, my buddy is currently in trouble for talking shit about that RA on the wolfweb.
