The black suit didn't have webbing...I think its just in shadows.

It looks to me like clouds when I zoomed in but it kinda looks like the outline of sandman with his right arm raised and partially disolved as he like to do so often (think any sandman card or cover featuring sandman...or fight featuring sandman for that matter).2/24/2006 5:19:12 AM |

yea, Venom and Carnage could only be faithfully brought to the screen with a LOT of CG.
And I doubt Venom will show up, except maybe as a teaser at the end.
If this is the black suit spiderman, it should be much better movie-wise. Frankly, his black-suit days were my favorite storylines in the spidey timeline. 2/24/2006 6:34:40 AM |

I really don't think that's what the alien costume is going to end up looking like in the movie. I think the image is just a tease. For art's sake, it's a transitional look between his original outfit and what will be the actual symbiote costume...If they showed him in the actual symbiote, the suit with the big white spider, people who don't know the story might think it's actually a different character. And some people who don't know much more than that might mistake him for Venom, who will in all likeliness be saved for the fourth movie and they don't want to imply too strongly that 3 is Venom's movie. I'm guessing Hobgoblin is going to be the primary villain and Sandman a lesser one. 2/26/2006 3:16:17 AM |

And to diverge at bit, I think it's crazy that they killed Doc Ock, cause now they can't have the Sinister Six. But that's assuming that death in comic book movie land has more value than in print.

Do you remember how goofy the first Green Goblin (or what is hobgoblin?) in the first movie looked?
I wouldn't put it beyond them to jew out on the symbiote costume.
It also just looks like city streets in his eye reflection.

^^^^ It's definately not a black costume but I think you're reading too much into it. I think they are just trying to make him look solemn. Without any facial expression due to the mask, bright red and blue doesn't exactly give that mood too well.
And in the eye, its just a reflection of the webbing on his arm. 2/27/2006 11:29:07 PM |

The symbiote is going to be in the movie. Like I said, I really don't think this is the symbiote in the photo. And the movie has to end on a cliffhanger. There's no way this movie can be about Venom, because pete has to serve his time in the suit and it's set up to finish off the Osborn story.

so if venom is in this movie, it means spiderman is venom first right?
didn't read the comics but that was how it went in the cartoon series 2/28/2006 1:27:24 AM |
obi New Recruit 49 Posts user info edit post |
The alien costume is not Venom. Venom is what results from the alien costume bonding with suicidal, Spidey-hating reporter Eddie Brock. The alien itself doesn't have a name. Spider-man does get it first and wears it for, i don't know, 10 issues or so. He got it during something called the Secret Wars (which I haven't read, but it's just a bunch of Marvel heroes and villians going at it...in space!) when his old costume got thrashed and he found what he thought was a costume-regenerating machine, or some such thing. He didn't know that the suit was alive for a good while and when he found out, he got rid of it and the suit found Mr. Brock and chaos ensued. 2/28/2006 1:33:25 AM |

ok cool I just really like the way it was done in the cartoon series where the costume gave him so much power that he nearly started killing people
I think if that happened it would really go along with the previous themes in the movies 2/28/2006 1:37:50 AM |

Shit yeah. I think the Alien Costume episodes on Fox were the best fuckin' Saturday mornings of my childhood. And then halfway through season 3 the motherfuckers stopped airing the series in my little hick town and I'm still bitter about it. But whatever. As I understand the show got crazy retarded after that.
Oh and, as far as I remember, the only power that the symbiote gave Spider-Man in the comic was the ability to self-generate webbing. He couldn't jump higher and all that hooey, but that's really a pretty cool addition. I don't really remember it altering his personality either, but I might be wrong on that one. But if it does in the movie, that'd be pretty cool. Actually...that would sort of be really awesome, because he'd be going berserk on Harry. 2/28/2006 1:53:27 AM |

If they were to follow that storyline in the movie..i could definitely see them making the suit change his personality... like a classic good vs. evil fight and then he realizes it is changing him and he rejects it and loses the suit..etc... 2/28/2006 6:54:30 AM |

they already have set up that jjs son is an astronaut..they could just as easily have him coming back from a space mission with the symbiote on board (like what is supposed to happen) vs. having the symbiote just be some Oscorp project 2/28/2006 10:06:41 AM |

The symbiote amplifies things about a person . . . hence making it a symbiote. It generated its own webbing and slightly amplified Spidery's strength and finesse and stuff from my understanding. Also, its not so much that it "altered" Parker's personality but brought it more to life. He had much less restraint over his actions with the symbiote attached and he was more violent.
Hence when a suicidal, Spidey-hating Eddie Brock was fused with the symbiote, he became a violent Spiderman nemesis.2/28/2006 10:35:13 AM |

Yeah, I totally thought it was coming out this summer, then I saw the countdown timer on the official page. At first I thought it was an error, but no I have to wait for another freaking year. It feels like this one is taking longer than the others to make. I'll be to old to eat solid foods by the time I get to see Venom!!! @#()*$@#($&@*$
So...wait...if that poster is showing us a first glimpse at the symbiote costume, then it will mimic the design of Pete's first costume? If that is the case I will lose all respect for Rami. The black costume was the most badass costume design of any superhero in my childhood.

I have the Secret Wars #8issue where Spidey gets the symbiote:
In the newer stories they changed it either where astrounauts picked it up (mid-90s Spidey cartoon) or where it was some kind of man made creation (Ultimate Spiderman story).
I wonder which re-write of the original mythology they'll go with. I believe in the cartoon it was JJJ's son the astrounaut who brought it back to earth.

Well in a self contained story like the cartoon (or a movie) it would be hard to explain the Beyonder just appearing, transporting basically the entire Marvel universe to his "Battleworld" and setting them loose on each other. Spiderman's costume gets all torn to hell and then he makes one with what he thinks is a synthetic fabric he finds.
It's a lot easier to say its a government experiment or an alien that crept on board a space craft and was brought back to earth. 2/28/2006 2:24:40 PM |

May I point out that they did do that segment in the cartoon series? For reasons of popularity, they did the Venom Saga in season 1 and the Secret Wars in Season 5.2/28/2006 4:15:29 PM |

I'll have to reread the alien costume books I have (the issues in Amazing Spider-Man) over spring break. The alien wouldn't have to amplify Peter's strength or his powers to be a symbiote though. They'd just have to have a mutually beneficial relationship. The only benefit I think I didn't mention was the obvious ability to mimic any clothing Peter thought of. I don't remember him making a big deal about amplified powers in ASM. And I don't remember any "whoa, I almost overshot the whole roof!" moments in the comic like there were in the cartoon, but maybe this happened in Secret Wars and the novelty wore off quick? I never bothered with Secret Wars cause the concept seemed so cheesy to me.
Oh and, there was this really awesome What If comic where he keeps the symbiote so long that it leeches the life out of him (doesn't this make it more of a parasite?). Seems like I remember it bringing his personality "more to life" there, but I haven't read that shit in a long time...2/28/2006 5:07:14 PM |
