you cant prevent a guy from shooting nba+ range shots. if jjs on a roll he wont be stopped. other than that, all you can do is put an athletic long guy on him to keep him one dementional 12/10/2005 3:52:53 PM |

contrary to what you may believe, almost all of his shots were made within a pretty normal distance. Texas just never had a defender there in time. We all know JJ can hit an open shot. He was open most of the time, today. 12/10/2005 3:59:48 PM |

his scores (from the highlight alone) in order 1.stepback 3 to get seperation but guy jumped out hadn in face 2.dockery saves the rebound kicks out to jj from well behind nba range with a guy near him and a guy jumping in his face 3.spinning runner through the lane over defense (2 guys) 4.jj runs around a pick to get a deep nba look and tucker jumps out at him late 5. gets his man to bite on pump fake and makes short 3 with man getting back in his face 6. loose ball save by sheldon williams loose ball open short 3 some dude was jumping out at hime
1,2 and 3 were great defense. 4 was bad d (for redick but great for anybody else). five was good d but more of a great play by jj and 6 was just misfortune. nothing you can do about that.

^wow, you show your true basketball stupidity. In no way, shape, or form is it good defense to let a guy square up and shoot. Actually good defense is forcing a guy to take shots out of his normal rhythm and position. Just having a hand in the face, especially a late one, is poor defense.
The stepback was poor defense. The pump fake was because of a guy being out of position -- a defensive breakdown. NBA range doesnt mean dick if a guy has time to square and get into his motion. You can go to any park in raleigh and find guys who can hit really long shots if they get into their regular shooting motion.
Teams have actually played good defense on JJ -- the one whose messageboard you are posting on, for example. You are welcome to delude yourself, though, into thinking that texas played anything close to acceptable defense. Texas might be a good team, but they certainly didn't play a good game.
It's amusing to watch all these duke fans come out of nowhere and bleed out of their vaginas whenever someone on a NCSU messageboard points out that they have looked unimpressive until this game.

you can only do so much. if a guy is trying to make cuts and get picks to get a loooong 3 off theres nothing you can do to prevent him from getting that off without giving up a much easier shot or a layup if you try to stay right on somebody that far out they will only end up cutting to get open for an even better shot. i never said texas played a good defensive game but i broke those plays down for what theyre worth. you said jj was "wide open all day" whihc was so far from the truth i had to point it out. not allowing a guy to get a shot off leaves you vulnerable to pump fakes (5) playing over picks gives the guy a strait shot into the lane (3) on 1 jj dribbled a few steps in and #5 was on somebody else cut him off and defended his man. jj stepped back and shot the 3 with his man jumping at him(you cant do more than jump at somebody on a stepback). what would ncstate have done better on that play?

^^ christ, this is like arguing with a child. You can't break down snapshots of a defense playing poorly and say that one or two things could have been adjusted to prevent that play. You are trying to erect a strawman that you can defeat easily.
(Furthermore, if a guy has to resort to jumping at you, he is playing bad defense and his team is playing bad defense. A late hand in the face is meaningless to any good shooter. In other words, JJ was open most of the game and in most of those clips )
An actual team defense doesn't allow JJ to have the same opportunities, and they make different trade offs. This is how NCSU has limited him at times, and this is how other teams have limited him this year.
You seem to be under the ridiculous illusion that there is no way he could have been prevented from dropping 40. Texas played awful defensively, but somehow JJ's points are because he made all these amazing plays against tight defense? That's pure fucking homerism. 12/11/2005 2:47:04 PM |

if you watch the highligh you will see he did make amazing plays and that doesnt show everything
i know he wouldnt of dropped anywhere near 41 if it was great d the whole game but some of those plays were undefendable. why would you want to make the trade off of giving a layup instead of a contested 30 footer. if you give jj enough attention to not let him get a 3 off from beyond nba range you have no chance of winning the game anyway because you wont stop much else. memphis limited jj one half by putting carney (a long tall fast guy) on him, leaving dockery and melchioni and giving sheldon williams a career high off 2 footers. i dont remember jj attempting shots that half.
please explain to me how you can prevent a guy from getting a stepback or fadeaway off?
at times jj is missing but when hes on there not much you can do 12/11/2005 3:07:04 PM |

from espn "Who can drain 3-pointers over point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards and lanky centers? Can any other player demoralize a team with 3-pointer, after 3-pointer, after 3-pointer -- nine in all on 16 attempts? Who else can make a defender look downright silly, like the time in Duke's 97-66 throttling of Texas at the Meadowlands when Redick pump-faked Texas JUCO transfer J.D. Lewis and knocked down a three, just another dagger in the Longhorns?"
"I put the best pressure on him in practice, but then he'll knock them down and you're like 'ahhhh,' you can't stop him," Duke senior point guard Sean Dockery said. "He's unstoppable. When he's in a zone like that it's like throwing a rock in a lake for him. He's on fire. All of our guys enjoy it. No one is jealous." 12/11/2005 3:17:30 PM |

Jesus christ you are an idiot. Letting JJ drive isn't a layup, it's forcing him to make a play that is out of his comfort zone. A good defense has the right help defense there to pick him up. This is a much better option than letting him get the shot he wants. JJ's dick is tapping on your brain.

if jj drives into the lane and others hlep it will be a layup for somebody else or a shot by jj like on the highlight where he spun throuhg the lane. jj is so much better from last year because he is dangerous inside the arc, on the dribble and passing. dukes offensive spacing really limits how much you can help without paying

Assuming you don't count postseason, no.
They have 10 games left, which, at JJ's average pace, would make your prediction perfect.
However, Duke is guaranteed at least one ACC tournament game and an NCAA tournament game (I'll leave the NIT out of this, unless the entire ball club dies in a plane crash).
Worst case scenario, they get a maximum additional 9 games (3 ACC, 6 NCAA), in which Redick could end up breaking 1000. 1/29/2006 4:55:56 PM |

jj's comfort zone is b/w the halfcourt line and the baseline. you know he doesnt just make three's right. do you know anything about offensive plays and how/why theyre run? duke does not run a consistent offense that sets him up for a 3. saying that driving is out of his comfort zone is so cliche. there is also a reason why good defenses have not been able to stop duke, and its not only because jj is nasty from beyond the arc (although that does unleash momentum).
if he is not open on the perimeter, and judging from the defense's set up, driving can be the best option. he is constantly doubled teamed or played tightly on the outside when facing a man defense, which either leaves a man open for him to kick out to or a easy pump fake and 3, or drive to the basket for a layup or jump shot.
if facing a box and 1 or other zone (esp 3-2), just his presence on the outside will cause a collapse on the defense, where a pass or another fake and drive open up the possibility for a layup, jumper, or a quick kick out to paulus, melchionni, or dockery to either take the open shot or set up another play. sheldon william's presence also takes flack off of redick on a drive.
his driving and ballhandling skills have improved dramatically this year. think about it, JJ averages almost 28 ppg, averaging 18 pts from INSIDE and around the paint. he's 2nd on the team in assists at 2.5 pg, and averages close to 12 ppg from beyond the arc. of course he is a perimeter shooter, but i would not go as far to say that he is uncomfortable with driving to the basket.
he also has the ability to be outnumbered and outsized on a drive and force the foul, which happens frequently. (he is tied with sheldon williams in FT attempts at 7.6 pg btw, and that comes mostly from attacks downlow)
his presence alone restructures and demolishes defenses. hell, he averages 37 minutes a fuckin game. his offensive role is not limited to 3's, those are the only shots you remember, or are expecting. he is a very agressive offensive player, on and off the ball, and is not uncomfortable with taking it to the basket.
