There is such hatred because of the emotions that are present in politics. And that in itself is part of the problem. People letting their emotions control them, and not thinking logically.

Differing political viewpoints typically result from major ideological differences. You are rarely ever going to have a consensus on any particular issue, no matter how much you try to "listen and work together"."

No, I don't think there is one right way to do things, but I think our heads are so blinded by terms like "conservative" and "liberal" that it's made us hate each other. For instance, you are so blinded by everyone arguing that you think it's impossible for conservatives and liberals to agree on something. I'm not claiming that there is common ground on every issue, but I'm willing to bet there are many things people agree on despite their political views if they would listen and hear each other out on some things. I just think "making the world better" doesn't require bitterness toward someone who has a different opinion.

The short version for me is a world or country that is not safe for democracy and basic human rights, either because oppressive regimes are allowed to grow or because our system is too weak to defend itself, let alone rights.

That's just one example.

And if you think all my beliefs run counter to that goal, keep it to yourself for now, that's not the purpose of this thread.

Not sure how you would possibly arrive at this conclusion from anything on this board.

^ why so defensive?

I was merely inquiring about your opinions.

(but you still have yet to answer my question. I suppose I'll drop it for now. Thanks.)

How could I possibly answer your question more clearly?

I want this country, and the world along with it, to follow a certain course defined by beliefs that I've made clear something on the order of 5,000 times on this message board. People who do not share my beliefs are not likely to take us down that course, so I do not support them, and in fact oppose them.

Reword your question, maybe I'm just not getting it.

^^^

I will gladly try to reword it. Sorry for the confusion.

Why do you want this country to follow your beliefs? Who would you like to benefit in the end?

(Did that work?)

I already answered your question.

Everyone wants to benefit themselves. Even those who say they just want to feed the poor or have no war really just want to make THEMSELVES feel better that noone is starving and noone is dying.

There is no real altruism

Because I believe that doing so will maximize both the benefit to good people and the percentage of good people in society as a whole. "Good people" generally being defined as people who pose no harm to society or to basic American ideals; in other words, the majority of the people in this country.

I also believe it would lead to the more rapid liberation of other places in the world that are still under the jackboot of dictatorial or semi-dictatorial oppression.

Of course, it's probable that we define "benefit" in different ways...I don't mean to say I would give lots of free shit out, but rather that personal liberty and safety would simultaneously increase.

It's a divide an conquer strategy. Keep the people at each others throats so the officials in Washington can continue to pass any law they want to appease the corporations and private individuals who funded their campaign to get them in office in the first please. Why do you think drug laws exist? It not because they care about us "abusing our bodies" or bullshit like that, it's to protect certain industries namely the alcohol and tobacco industries. Why do you think there are so many stringent regulations for companies? It's not to protect the worker, but to keep help stifle competition for the mega-corporations. And every few years or so the politicians will go back to the respective districts and stir up the fire again with superficial issues (gay marriage, religion in schools, bullshit like that) to get reelected so they can pass even more laws which don't benefit WeThePeople (and they oftentimes hurt) at all but benefit those who helped them get in power. They use the media to control and pacify WeThePeople and when anyone dares to fall out of lock step with majority opinion s/he is branded "unAmerican" or "unPatriotic" or "bigot" or any of the other meaningless vague titles used to divide and conquer. The Real ID act was passed with little or no discussion. THE DEMOCRATS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE ARCH-RIVALS TO THE REPUBLICANS DID NOT EVEN BOTHER TO INFORM THE PUBLIC THAT THIS HAD PASSED. WHERE WAS HOWARD DEAN AT THEN? They did not do this because the is little difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. They both work together to help each other remain in power, while at the same time making the public believe that are bitter enemies. And in 2008 it will be the same thing. Same superficial issues as before, all while they never mention anything of importance like the fascist legislation that has been passed in the last few years. Same bullshit as all the years before and we will be at each others throats not realizing who the real enemy is.

Look at congress. It is a two party system. Mostly, partisanship is to blame.

the no true altruism theory just seems like a big copout to me. you are simplifying human emotions and motives more than is necessary. you are chilling in some room and this guy is starving next to you. you must only feed him cuz you'd feel bad if you didnt and others would label you poorly!!! sure i dont want to see/listen to him starve to death, nor do i want those labels, but that doesnt mean i cant have compassion for my fellow man. sure it might not be "true altruism," but that doesnt mean the MAJORITY of my reasoning has to be selfish. to me that is good enough and seems to make that whole theory rather pointless.

same with politics. like grumpy said, many involved with politics beleive their views will maximize the benefits for the people in society. if you think the opposition is wrong and their policies are bound to hurt the people you're going to oppose them. obviously not everyone is level headed and civil and, as ive said before, negative campaigns are very effective...thus the hate.
