I still don't see why people think a war that ended over 200 years ago is still such a big deal. Sure the North one and the South lost but really why is it such a big deal?

all wars are a big deal. you shouldnt just forget the past just because its over.
...the funny thing about this war, is that the losers are ones that still bring it up. how many times do you see the germans or the japanese bring up WWII? 12/14/2005 8:42:42 AM |

i agree, my father and I have uncovered records of close to a dozen ancestors in my family that were soldiers in the confederacy. My father is a member of a historical group called sons of the confederacy.
i, for one...really enjoy talking w/ some of our more elderly family members and looking through all the old family photo albums, some from the 1800's and hiking through the woods w/ my dad looking for old family graves.
genelogy really isnt appreciated in a lot of families and i appreciate the effort my pops has put in to keep all of our family records together and a working family tree for his side of our family.
he even contacted the us gov. when we found the graves of some of relatives that were confederate soldiers....the government paid for and sent to us marble, confederate soldier grave markers that were placed at the sites. our family has had trouble with the land owner threatening to plow over the grave sites and from what i understand now, the government soldier markers protect the graveyard...but im not sure if i really understand that law12/14/2005 9:20:26 AM |

I'm not saying that one should forget about the past, it just seems that anytime anybody has some kind of opinion on something, there is always someone that is like "You're from the North aren't you!" or "You're from the South, figures!" 12/14/2005 9:23:36 AM |

That's like somebody from Germany hanging a swastika flag on their wall and saying "it's pride not prejudice sweetheart. You must be Jewish." 12/14/2005 9:27:32 AM |

now dont me wrong, my family doesnt have confederate flags hanging up anywhere, but we are proud of our past, not ashamed
hell, my ancestors were to damn poor to be able to afford slaves back then anyways....
hey, not to change the subject...but did anyone see the black dudes marching in new orleans i think w/ the signs that read black holocaust...talking about katrina?

TAKE IT TO THE SOAP BOX
My boyfriend and I buy gifts for our parents together. His mom is getting a strange brick making thingy (that she asked for) and a kitchen aid bowl with a handle. His dad is getting a new monitor from us, his sister and his mom. My mom is getting jammies and slippers. 12/14/2005 9:50:27 AM |

Did anyone actually read what was on the flag and her label on the picture in her gallery?
Or were you just so amused that she has pictures of her fat ass that you don't care.

A nice bottle of wine is a perfectly acceptable gift for parents.
[redneck joke]Or if they like John Deer... I'm guessing Pabst Blue Ribbon might be more up their alley?[/redneck joke]

Ok I need help with a gift for my boyfriend's parents as well. This is the second time meeting them (we've only been dating for about 4 months). I am going down next week to visit and I think I should get them a little something, though I'm not quite sure what. My boyfriend doesn't think that I need to get them anything at all, but I think it'll be respectful if I do. They don't drink or smoke. They like quality stuff and so there's no way in hell I'd give them a gift card to walmart. Should I get them flowers or something?
I have no idea.

flowers are always appropriate - any host should be ready with a vase when company is coming maybe a poinsettia or Christmas cactus?
Since they don't drink I'll assume a bottle of wine is out... flowers are the best bet for a 2nd meeting under 6 months. 12/14/2005 2:13:05 PM |

just get them a picture frame with your and your boyfriend in it, or just an empty frame. 12/14/2005 2:13:32 PM |

Ok, I suppose I'll just do flowers. His ex was psycho and constantly talking about marriage. I don't want to give them the impression that I could have the same traits, so I'll try to stay away from any permanent photos. Although it's a good idea, I think flowers may work out best. But should I get them a usual pointsetia or like a bouqet? Thanks for the suggestions! 12/14/2005 2:20:07 PM |

Christmas cactus? lol Never heard that one before. (and I'm not trying to be sarcastic, seriously never heard of that, is that common?) 12/14/2005 2:30:11 PM |

I think it depends on how far you are travelling etc...
I would pick up a poinsettia - probably easiest and travels better if you have the room.
A bouquet I would pick up at Whole Foods or Fresh Market - those might not travel as well, but can probably take up less space.
Either way, tie a bow on the flowers/plant and you're good to go - nice ice breaker when you first come in as well - they get to tell you how pretty it is and you get to act thoughtful. 12/14/2005 2:30:16 PM |

Hickory Farms says "I wanted to buy you some cheap food crap that is only sold around Christmas to people like me who don't know what to get for someone like you. Sure, the sausages suck, the cheese is gross, and everything else is stale, but I don't mind because it's not like you're supposed to eat it. Just offer it to everyone who comes to visit during the holidays so you don't have to feed them any real food." 12/14/2005 3:16:52 PM |

have you been to their house? are there any displays?
for instance i had an ex who's mom i love dearly. i hadnt known her as well the first christmas though, but i knew she had a curio cabinet w/ angels in it, and a few angels as decorations around the house.
so i got her a couple of the Boyd's bears angels, and she loved them.
i would say one of those gift baskets w/ cheeses/summer sausage, etc, but i dont know if that would be bad or good w/ his dad just out of a heart attack.
if there are little kids/grandkids who visit the house, dont get a poinsettia
Edit: some people believe theyre poisonous. theres also research that says theyre not. but i doubt you would want to start a debate.

Ok and one more thing, I'm also going to visit two of my bf's aunts and one of his grandmoms. Do I need to bring them anything as well? I don't want to overdo it but I don't want to be rude because we may be having dinner at their house.
he's got a lot of family... 12/15/2005 2:39:48 PM |
