I hate the Yankees and I hope that Damon has the worst season on his career next year. They did overpay for him and there is no way in three to fours years he'll be worth 13 million per season. 12/21/2005 5:52:04 PM |

Uh, No, his agent talked to Boston right after getting the offer from the Yankees. Boston told him, they would not move on their 4/40Mil offer.
Yes this makes him a traitor, but it did seem like the Boston management was disrespecting him. I personally think he would have taken less if Boston had just showed that they wanted him. He probably would have taken Boston's offer if they would have just added a 5th year vested option.12/21/2005 6:03:53 PM |

johnny cash had a great hit that must have been towards redsox fans.... i think it was called "cry cry cry".
how bout getting an owner that will invest this much money in his team, and you could buy whoever you wanted to as well.
also, until they get a cap in baseball, don't blame steiny for spending whatever he wants. 12/21/2005 7:25:20 PM |

The Yankees are the best team in baseball again. It pisses me off. I know Damon probably isn't worth $13M over 4. However, the Red Sox had a $10M/4 deal. It WAS worth it to pony up that extra $3M/yr to do two things: keep him in the Fenway CF and to not let the Yanks complete their team.
Lets face it. The Yankees with Crosby in CF are NO WHERE NEAR as good as the Yankees with Damon in CF. All the Yankee fans on here will tell you, like they did all offseason so far, that Crosby was fine and they didn't need anyone else. That is just plain wrong. Every single one of them wanted an upgrade. Well now they got it.
Larry Luchinno seems hell bent on destroying every bit of good will this team had from 2004. Every bit of it. Not only did he lose the heart and soul of the team, now Manny says he will accept a trade ANYWHERE because he doesn't feel the Sox want to win. No Damon and No Manny will eventually lead to NO Ortiz. Everyone knows that.
The second Johnny Damon gets introduced with his short hair and clean shaven face in pinstripes it will be the worst day for a Red Sox fan since October 2003 seeing Pedro walking off that mound in the 8th inning.

He is playing by the rules. There is no disputing that. However, it is still unfair. There needs to be a reasonable limit. Everyone knows the Yankees are an international cash cow. There is no reason a team should be allowed to outspend everyone else by almost $100M dollars. People always give the Mets shit in the NL for having the highest payroll. It is still HALF of the Yankees. The Red Sox are the only other MLB team over the luxury tax limit. It is still $75M less then the Yankees. That is outrageous. I'm not blasting the Yanks because, like I said, it is totally legal. I'm merely saying it shouldn't be. I'd be fine even with a $150M cap. At least that would make it A LITTLE fair.

Damon was one of the biggest stars on the team. Without him you still would be waiting for a World Series win. As soon as he leaves for a better deal (like any other player in the current history of sports would have done) you say he is horrible and not worth the money. How about instead of bitching about the trade and how much Damon sucks think about how horrible your team has done this off season. You know, whoever they get to replace Damon will not be anywhere near the impact player he was. .
So instead of taking your anger out on Damon and the Yankees, I think you should direct it towards the people that really deserve it.....THE RED SOXS for letting a star player like that go. 12/22/2005 9:43:16 AM |

Well of course we wanted an upgrade. But saying we would have been fine with Crosby out there is still true.
I mean, duh, Damon is the better player. But Crosby would have been out there because he would have been a HUGE defensive upgrade from Bernie. I don't think any of us was saying we didn't WANT an upgrade so much as if we didn't get one, we wouldn't have shed a tear about it.
All of us were hoping for an upgrade in CF, there's no question; you're absolutely right.
Frankly I was more concerned about the bullpen than CF. Crosby's defense would have done just fine, and we all know our offense would have been OK, but obviously it's much better off now. All the offense in the world doesn't matter if you can't get from a starter to Mo. I hope Farnsworth, Myers and Dotel can do it. That's been my biggest concern.12/22/2005 9:55:35 AM |

how have the Red Sox had a horrible offseason up til Tuesday, they upgraded at 2nd base, they got a hot prospect at third, they offloaded the man with the most errors at SS in the MLB last season. Until we lost Damon to Free Agency, he wasn't traded like some have erroneously stated, it was a mediocre offseason, and its not over yet. Losing the best leadoff hitter in the majors hurts but the Red Sox weren't going to pay him that much for that long because he could become an injury risk playing the position he does. Lucchino is fucking the team up though, and John Henry is too scared of him to do anything about it. It hasn't been the offseason of dreams, but we will bounce back. 12/22/2005 11:01:59 AM |

I wouldn't want Boston to overpay at 52 for 4 years. It's going to be funny in a couple years when the yanks are too old to win and they have all of these contracts... 12/22/2005 11:55:24 AM |
