It might be that a good team can underperform....
but its pretty rare to put bad players on the field who arent well coached and have them win a lot of games.
That's a bad team.... 1/9/2006 9:43:57 PM |

I read somewhere that Vince Young is the first Longhorn to declare for the draft early in like 8 years. If that's correct it shows you something. That the guys thinking about jumping ship know that they can come back and get there stock even higher, because it's Texas. With Young, it couldn't be any higher. Tulloch should go, his stock won't be higher, Mario obviously too. Mccargo, Morris, would stay to get their stock up but there is a good chance our team will not help them, this is the difference between their situation and guys like Quentin Jammer, D. Johnson, Ricky Williams, Priest Holmes, etc. etc. hanging around for another year with Texas. I certainly don't fault them one bit, although McCargo with a decent D line, which is clearly up in the air and something he does not want to chance, could raise his stock. 1/9/2006 9:44:01 PM |

I'm comfortable with our DT's. Tyler really played well w/out McCargo, and Pressley is just a flat out beast. Hopefully we can do some coaching in the offseason...since finally we have at least a little continuity in the coaching staff. 1/9/2006 10:01:52 PM |

It's not a matter of the starters, its a matter of depth. The starters will have a dropoff, but we're really gonna be thin 1/9/2006 10:03:38 PM |

yeah, i meant to add in "but who is gonna back them up"
We're probably fucked. Chuck talked all season about "building quality depth". "the great programs have redshirt juniors and seniors starting at every position almost". You do not build quality depth by having your players dart for the NFL at the first sign of trouble. 1/9/2006 10:11:08 PM |

I think it was just a case of "Well shit, all the playmakers are going, I'll go too!" type thing. Don't think it's a sign of any impending trouble in the program, but we're Shit out of Luck for next season.
As I said, we still have one more pondering an NFL jump 1/9/2006 10:14:11 PM |

this is just getting ridiculous
Who the fuck else can go pro? The whole god damn defense cant leave. I dont blame them for riding the high of top ranked defenses, but there is no way they are all that good. I konw you said GH and LH, but thats just insane. If anything, Garland would have more of a chance to make plays without a good front 7. I mean we still have some playmakers back there, but you just wonder what the fuck they're thinking. Mario is good, but him and Manny leaving wasnt going to kill the D....maybe hurt, but they still could have been top 25...especially if our fucking offense learns how to move the ball. 1/9/2006 10:21:31 PM |

What really got Dexter Reid's stock up a few years ago was being the leading tackler on a team as a defensive back, allowing him to make a lot of plays, which should have Heath returning....Leroy has a wife & kid, so if he can get a couple hundred K out of it, I don't blame him. 1/9/2006 10:36:48 PM |

That's what makes me think it's Harris.
I honestly don't know who it is.... The Mods on PP are saying there's one more that could be leaving us.... and Harris is my #1 guess.1/9/2006 10:41:48 PM |

it's gotta make ya wonder about the players' feelings towards the coaching staff, when every decent eligible player on the team--even mediocre--is leaving for the draft.
honestly, i think they've had enough, and they're trying their luck. 1/10/2006 3:51:11 AM |

How many are actually leaving early?
Mario of course, but he said that before he even started college. Tulloch makes sense, because he's not going to get much better. Morris and Harris, I've heard monetary issues are the major concern (which if nothing else, at least demonstrates that our program is clean and not paying players).

strange, I didn't realize you were that close with him. Fair enough though, considering he's gotten better every year he's been here. But ok.
I don't know anyone else that's leaving, but the same goes for McCargo, who could definitely up his stock even more, imo. Derrek Morris is just a fucking gastropod.
It just seems more like the guys don't have much hope for next year, so they're getting out while they can.1/10/2006 12:33:56 PM |
PackBacker All American 14415 Posts user info edit post |
Tulloch does make sense. With our front four gone, he won't get half the tackles he has in the past. He's sure as hell not getting any taller.... and our defense is going to be even worse next year. I'd leave too
Morris has a great NFL body. No work ethic, and he gets a lot of penalties, but he's ginormous and will get picked up. He had to go... he has a family sitution that requires him to go.
McCargo is a mystery. I can't decide if its good or not. He could help his stock next year, but then again he'll be triple teamed. He's coming off of injury, so I can't decide whether his stock would drop more due to injury or a subpar season next year.
If Harris goes, I really couldn't blame him.
If Heath goes, he's got the IQ of a garden gnome 1/10/2006 1:01:28 PM |

Talking in terms of draft stock, not trying to insult the guy. I think he's very talented and would love to have him back, but how do you get better than being the leading tackler on one of the nation's top defenses for two years running?
We probably will miss Morris. Despite the penalties, he gives huge, strong size on the line. Let's hope those redshirted linemen can fill that gap.
McCargo is the only one I can see that might be considered "jumping ship." Much like Tulloch, I'd much rather have him back, but if he thinks he's in good shape for the draft and does well at the combine, then I wish him luck.1/10/2006 1:10:20 PM |

You all really need to look at it from the player perspective as individuals.
-Mario - obviously should go. Top 10 pick...likely 1st DE. -McCargo - With Mario and Manny gone he would see a ton of Double teams and backs chipping him...performance would likely drop and so would his draft status. This is probably the best move for him to succeed at the next level. -Tulloch - with the DL already thin...next year the opponents OL will have better success getting blockers to the 2nd level...this is the highest his stock could be for the draft. His mother also is working 2 jobs back home and he wants to help her out. I wish him all the best b/c he desirves it! -Morris - rumors that the school work wasn't going to well. He should be drafted unless he doesn't work out to prepare...if he puts the effort in he has the potential to be a pro bowl OL. I hope he gets his attitude straight so we can see to of the potential we knew he had while here but never really broke out.
Possibilities
-Heath - his tackle #s may go thru the roof next year but if the pass rush lacks due to the losses on the OL and LB, you could see us getting toasted in the passing game. He may feel like its now or never. -Harris - hes been a top OL for 2 years now even while being out of position for 1.5 years. If he returns he wants to play OG b/c he will not be a center in the NFL. - AJ Davis - similar reasons to Heath but AJ will graduate in May and may want to go ahead and take his shot with the D being so thin next year. - Deraney - just kidding...but my fiance though it would be funny if he left early since he was our best player. 1/10/2006 1:37:20 PM |

Did anyone else read the Technician article on Morris today? He said he's not going for money, he's going because he loves to play football. His dream is to play in the NFL...so he is taking that opportunity. He apparently doesnt care if he can make more money by improving his stock next season...he just wants to play in the NFL.
From reading the article, it sounds like he is a total assbag moron, and I dont really want him on the team. Fuck him. 1/10/2006 1:58:30 PM |

I don't give a shit about Morris - his fucking 5 penalties in the first two games this past season sealed my hate for him. Talk about an underachieving player. He was a 5 star prospect and committed to Ohio State before us.
As for McCargo, I wish he'd stay, but can't argue with him leaving. 1/10/2006 2:04:43 PM |

as the season went on Morris cut down on his penalties, not that it really matters, but it shows he learned after a while.
I would also rather see Greco at QB, much faster than Stone, and a better arm 1/11/2006 8:46:59 PM |

Fuck that. Greco won't even be able to beat out Burke. I seriously doubt that Greco knows how to read a defense from what I have read about his HS experience. 1/11/2006 8:49:33 PM |

Evans, Burke, Greco whoever i dont care.
Just for the love of god dont start Stone again.
We already know he's a disaster, no need to waste a third consecutive season.
I wrote on a gambling forum that NC State was probably the bowl lock of the year at -3.5

yeah i mean I explained to them that we were going to win because:
our defense was going to dominate for 60 minutes, our running backs were sick, and we had rectified the penalty problems.
Then I explained that NCSU being the bowl lock of the year was in spite of Marcus Stone and not because of him.
A few people listened me and made a lot of money, a few people didn't listen and went with USF. By the 2nd quarter they were ALL abandoning ship and grabbing as many shares of NC State as they could.
I pumped State up about 1.5 points by myself that morning.... went from $5 to $5.15 before kickoff... even though the whole week prior to the game ALL the money was coming in on USF. Seriously, the line opened at 7 and took a nose dive to 3.5
