Wow. There are references to the steam tunnels in the student code of conduct and in some maintence plans, but that's it. 5/22/2006 11:59:52 AM |

so, what's the story behind the steam tunnels? i clicked the link on page 1 but it no longer works. i vaguely recall reading something on tww a year or two ago about some students venturing into the tunnels....or maybe i'm confusing that with the 1911 Bldg ghost chase anyone care to fill me in about the steam tunnels? 5/22/2006 3:50:33 PM |

wow, I am going to go check that place out
I like looking at old places and thinking how they used to be
What's that story about old Avent Ferry Road? Why was it closed/moved and how can I get there? Is there an actual road still?
Also, what is up with the steam tunnels. Where are they? How do you get to them? 5/22/2006 5:47:48 PM |

you have to break in or be on the maintenance/operations crew at ncsu
the link is down and probably won't be coming back up - i can possibly email the pictures but not until thursday/friday
from what student conduct says - a few groups go down there every year and get caught - i heard about it originally from my dad who went down there when he went here
there are some threads on tww but they are lost in the archives 5/22/2006 5:53:22 PM |

Slight hijack -
Hey, I run out on Centenial Campus (in the woods behind the middle school...trails behind the Trailwood houses, trails parallel to the highway, and trails connecting up towards the back of the main college part of Centenial campus) and I've seen several (2) concrete markers in the ground (in very different places). At first I thought they were benchmarks, but upon closer inspection they were concrete posts with a seal on top that said "Dortthea Dix Boundary Marker."
Anyone have any info on why these might be out on that land?
Both were pretty far from present day Dix.

^I think you answered your own question there. This was middle of nowhere farmland when Dix was built. ---------------------------------------------- Avent Ferry road followed what is now Centennial Parkway down to the Burger King. (It actually ran in the parking lot of those apartment buildings from what I can tell) Anyway, it seems they moved it at some point so it would come into Western Blvd at a square angle, and so it would run alongside the Mission Valley shopping center.
The abandoned portion of Old Avent Ferry road is directly across from the orphanage site and runs from Centennial Parkway to Western Blvd at Pullen Park. Here are some photos:

The second pic is the same as the first, only further northeast down the road. Just go yourself, I don't have any more photos. 5/23/2006 1:29:36 AM |
