i, for one, think gavin has been GREAT the last two games and good enough the last 4 or 5, but before that he was a severe liability on both ends of the court and i stand by that. 3/11/2006 2:12:06 PM |

I like brackman and all, but he should honestly pick up baseball next year. While his getting "blasted" by UCLA hopefully does not hurt his stock, I'd rather he pursue a successful baseball career than jepordize it by playing bball. 3/11/2006 3:46:04 PM |

Last year Brackman didn't pitch until the basketball season was over, this year he decided to start pitching during basketball season. That is probably why he's not doing well in either, trying to do a balancing act and failing miserably at both. 3/11/2006 3:48:08 PM |

yeah, i absolutely could not stand gavin for all this season, and probably the second half of last season. but these last two games have really changed the way i feel about him. it isn't the fact that he finally had a couple of good games, really. it's the fact that he is playing with heart and passion when it seems like very few others are.
the fact that a broken nose didn't stop him makes it even more amazing. he isn't all of a sudden some awesome player now, but i am very encouraged by these two performances. hopefully he can gain some confidence from them and become a more dominant force and step into the role bennerman is leaving next year. 3/11/2006 5:53:32 PM |

i really don't see why fells didn't get more playing time this year especially when grant was playing badly. i wonder what fells could do if he was on the court for more than 2 seconds. 3/11/2006 8:38:29 PM |

maybe brandon costner will be healthy next year cuz i'd really like to see if he can live up to the hype around him being a McDonald's all american and all. a big forward who can hit 3's would be perfect for the way herb wants to play. 3/11/2006 8:48:56 PM |

Our forwards have been abused, this year. Losing hodge created a huge drop off at that position. 3/11/2006 9:01:16 PM |

Fundamentally, a good coach shouldn't leave incredible athletes on the bench. Fells might have a weakness, but a good coach finds a way to hedge against the weakness and exploit the athleticism. The same could have been said for bennerman his first 3 years, scooter sherrill, etc. But herb isn't really that good at developing talent, so he's not going to figure out how to maximize a player's strength.
Even if you take your lumps with fells early, it pays greater dividends earlier than playing atsur or evtimov all the time.

a lot of the problem with cam and scooter was they weren't putting forth the effort to improve their weaknesses. herb sat them until they showed effort in improving, then they played. and what do you know, they became good defenders. 3/11/2006 9:23:30 PM |
Lowjack All American 10491 Posts user info edit post |
^That's herb's way of developing players -- wait 3 years for them to get desperate and improve themselves.
That's not the only way to develop players nor is it the best way. I can see why herb is so adamant about defense, though. He is not confident that our offense can put up points, so he has to hedge against that by playing lock down defense.
Other coaches are willing to make this trade off between offense and defense because they aren't shackled to unproductive offensive systems, and they are better for it.

Not trying to be rude, but I highly doubt that you know anything about being a good college coach. First of all, Sendek has done more than enough to earn more respect from the student body. He is definately a "good coach" and more of that to boot.
At carolina, the athletes get good playing time. But Roy plays athletes because that is his system. Are you saying that Hamilton must play Echefu just because he is an exceptional athelete?
If you look back a couple of seasons ago, Julius Hodge came in as a freshman and tore it up because he had the skill and the savy right away. But at this point, I don't think that Fells has the savy to play in the ACC. Trust me, I went to all of the early season games and Fells had his chances to earn playing time, but he was not productive. If he could not play against guys from guelph, New Hampshire, or Mount Olive at that point in his career, than maybe he just was not ready for play time in the ACC this season.

1. First of all, no one trusts, you. People aren't going to agree with you because we trust you. 2. Sendek is an average coach who produces average results, at best. Compare him to his peers -- long time coaches at major D1 schools. 3. Your statement about roy's system is exactly the point -- his system is designed to exploit athleticism. What you don't seem to get is that exploiting athleticism in any kind of athletic activity is the best way to win at the highest levels. If you have an athlete that comes in with athleticism, it's your holy duty to give him experience so that he can pay big dividends early. 4. So fells played poorly because he didn't have experience. Guess how he gets that? You can't say that he will never develop the saavy based on a few garbage minutes early in his career. That's just stupid. 5. It's not a crime to beat a team using athleticism alone (versus using style or finesse).
You can think of athletic players as investments. You can invest conservatively as herb does, and wait 3 years for them to get good, or you can take risks early in order to make them better earlier.
An lets be clear what we are talking about, here -- we are only talking about 8-10 minutes of playing new players during the non conference schedule and maybe 5 mins during conference play. It's not like we want fells to play 20+ for the season.

And you do, so therefore you're allowed to make comments about our team, and we're not....ok....you're just retarded. And yes, I'm trying to be rude.
And BTW, I saw most of the early season games too. I was incredibly impressed with our depth and though Fells could only get better if he was on the floor, because he just looked like he felt out of place.
And guess what....none of them played a damn bit in the first big game...against ND. And none of them played a damn bit against Iowa, or Alabama. I dont think they deserved to sit the bench behind fucking Gavin Grant for most of the season. McCauley was the worst I thought, and he's getting the most minutes between the 2 of them. (I know costner got hurt).
I would have given a fuck less if we had lost one or two more early season big games....maybe against GW or Alabama if we had given the freshbabies some PT. It would have only helped our depth in the ACC and I guarantee we wouldnt have just lost 4 straight games. Our top 7 was physically and mentally fatigued, and it showed.
^Personally, I think that if we had given fells 10 minutes a game for the entire season, he would be playing 20 by now. I dont think those 5 great minutes he had against FSU were a fluke. Nobody who isnt ready for ACC play comes off the bench and lights it up like that.

Haha, you are absolutely right, I don't know what it takes to be a good coach, but I am not on this board boasting about what good college coaches "should" do. I am just smart enough to realize that a man coaching an ACC school knows infantely more about the sport than a student.3/12/2006 2:10:31 PM |
