I understand your point about how new the UNC/Duke "rivalry" is, and you're right about it not lasting forever, but I just know that UNC students don't care about UNC/NCSU games as much as NCSU students.
2/4/2006 7:14:03 PM
Just out of curiosity, what school WOULD say NCSU, right now, is their biggest rival?Wake? Maryland? We're in a sort of slump in comparison to Duke/UNC, thus the rivalry taking a back seat. But I think in the scheme of time UNC/NCSU will and is the biggest...especially within NC.
2/4/2006 7:17:04 PM
I think Duke has established themselves enough to remain a force even after K...and get any coach they want. I don't see them falling off, per se. Maybe not being the "Duke" we know, but at least staying around the top for awhile. (Then again, teams like Gtown and UCLA couldn't do that)It's going to be interesting if UNC, Duke, and State eventually climb back to their glory days to see who gets hyped the most. UNC students don't care about State becuase they're no longer battling State for supremacy. The pure hatred actually would be worse with State considering they're the two major public colleges of NC, their alums work together, and they're much more similar in student body (predominantly North Carolina residents). UNC and State, although I've never witness the "rivalry" in my life, I would imagine would be much more cut-throat just considering the amount of interaction between the schools alums[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 7:19 PM. It all depends on your definition of a "rival". NCSU students are fine in placing great importance on their UNC games but in the end it's not met with the same fervor on the other end.

^^only because NC State has sucked for 20 years. You do understand that just becuase UNC could care less about little ol' State nowadays, it hasn't always been that way nor will it remain that way.... right? I bet they'd care a lot more if State was ranked top 5 every year like Duke has been under coach K. On that same note, I bet they'd care a lot less about Duke if Duke lost K and came into the Nose dome at about 2-14 every year. Get the difference? It's a matter of the times. Duke/UNC will always be THE rivalry on the national stage.because Duke and UNC both have nationally recognized Medicine and Law schools. One is state-supported, the other is private ivy league.... nobody outside the ACC cares about "the university of north carolina at raleigh" what do we have, that people across the country know about? a vet school? maybe. not that i ever would, but it'd be like me trying to tell people on the east coast about Washington State University. what the hell is that? people know about the Univ. of Washington, but WSU? oh, it's just some agricultural and enginneering college in washingon. yawn.

FLyinRyan:just because you never left your hometown until college doesn't mean there isnt a larger world out there.and that larger world doesn't consider NCSU as rivals to UNC or Duke. In fact, the larger world doesnt consider NCSU much at all about anything. as far as the rest of the country is concerned, NCSU is just another state-supported cow college in just another state, like every other state has their own cow colleges.on the other hand, UNC and Duke are nationally recognized universities largely due to their top rated professional programs. and yes, its true they do spend money on quality sports programs unlike Harvard or Yale, because no one wants to watch chronically sucky teams. its a combination of nationally reknown academics, quality athletics, and lots of money. In the "national perception", UNC and Duke have all of that, and NCSU doesn't. [Edited on February 5, 2006 at 3:07 PM. Reason : ]

I'm a Carolina fan and so is the rest of my family. I'm an engineering major so coming to State was strictly business. I still wear my Carolina stuff around campus and the best State fans can muster up are dirty looks. They don't even talk shit. I'm 6'8, 260 lbs and black but had I done this on Dukes campus, I would be in fear of my life. The rivalry spawns from the lengths that the fans are willing go in the name of their school/team. Now I'm not saying State fans don't go to extremes but the lengths that Carolina is willing to go to get at Duke is a whole nother level and borders on criminal. When Carolina hates State as much as Carolina hates Duke then they'll be a rivalry again. State fans need to step their game up, come with some better insults than "Go to hell, Caroline".

^^ You've not answered the obvious question. Why should we care what Washington thinks of us? Do you think we wake up every day and say "Damn, I wish those northwesterners thought NC State was worth something"? I'm not a fan of NC State sports because they're awesome or win every game every year. I'm a fan because it's where I went to school and because I, like you, have red blood coarsing through my veins. I don't give a s*** what some people in Washington State who never attended an ACC game in their life and never will, thinks about our rivalry. I know our rivalries, and so do our opponents. Is Duke higher on Carolina's rivalry list right now than us. Yes, but only in basketball cause they're both good recently while we're not. Carolina has a bigger rivalry with us in football than Duke. It has nothing to deal with some school's alumni. I know a lot of Duke fans but very, very few Duke alumni. People there can give their comments regarding the Pac 10 and Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference. Do the Zags care what NC State fans think of them? Do Huskies or Cougars? I guess no. We point blank don't care what people there think, the majority of Carolina fans probably don't care, and Duke fans don't care, and from the looks of the crowd in the Super Bowl in Detroit tonight, the majority of the country thinks the same. The state of Washington can secede with Oregon and British Colombia from Canada to form Cascadia for all I care. http://zapatopi.net/cascadiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadiahttp://www.columbiana.org/cascadia_institute.htmhttp://cascadia.times.orghttp://portland.indymedia.org/en/region/cascadiahttp://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us%7Dcasc.htmlAnd why does Duke suck at football if they have all this money from what another person said? I just don't get why you think Duke will suddenly fall apart when K leaves. I mean Dawkins is sitting there, with a K pedigree, waiting to take over. I also think that you can't bring other sports in to play, no one in chapel hill cares about football, or baseball. Hell, they like Soccer better. Basketball is the triangle's sport. Rivalries are built and maintained on the hardwood, I'm sorry, we are not schools like Ohio State and Michigan, we just don't have the national powerhouse football programs like we have in basketball, between us we have what, 10 basketball national championships? That means we win like 1/8th of the time. Basketball is the sport people around here care about when it comes to bragging rights, if we would win in football but get swept in basketball, we lose, plain and simple. Football is honestly a sport to get us by til ACC basketball, one of the eight wonders of the world. I love football, but it can't compete with basketball, thus rivalries come from that sport round here.
