The debate about the actual buildings is inconsequential here. What matters is that Reynolds had a reputation for loud, rowdy students before Cameron ever did.

uhh...what?"

sorry they didn't win a national championship i guess. the rose bowl was played in durham in 1942 though. so they weren't too shabby. they were favored to win in that game as well, but were upset. it was (as far as i know) the only time the rose bowl was played outside of california.

first link i found about it on google:

also more on old duke football:
Quote :
"The "Iron Duke" team of 1938 was undefeated, untied and unscored upon before a heartbreaking 7-3 loss in Duke's first Rose Bowl game when Southern California scored in the last minute of play. Duke hosted the Rose Bowl in 1942 because of the surprise military attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 for the only time the game has ever been played away from California. Although favored, Duke lost to Oregon State 20 to 16. Wade took credit for the defeat saying the myriad details of being host distracted him. But the team played its worst game of the year. It was greatly disappointed with the relocation since it lost a glamorous trip to California and it had to practice in Durham over Christmas vacation as well. Wade coached twenty-six All-American players at Duke with eight joining him in the National Football Hall of Fame.

^They're two different games.

And don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying Duke never had a good football program. I do think it has been blown way out of proportion to become some mythical powerhouse that it really wasn't.

Yeah, Duke played in the Rose Bowl in 1938 at the Rose Bowl in CA. In 1942, Duke played in the Rose Bowl played at Wallace Wade Stadium. There is a commemerative rose garden planted outside the stadium to remember the event.
