I'm not going to claim to represent everyone's tastes in my list, but here were my favorite from 2005. Sometimes I hate critics because they brand their list as objective, but usually they always gravitate to indy releases and trendy shit. My list is purely based on my personal idea of good song writing, melody, and idea. The lack of hip-hop is on purpose because it is not my style....I haven't heard good hip-hop and rap since the mid 90s. (personal opinion).

1. Air – Talkie Walkie
2. Supergrass – Road to Rouen
3. Sleater Kinney – The Woods
4. New Pornographers – Twin Cinema
5. M83 – Before the Dawn Heals Us
6. Spoon – Gimme Fiction
7. Paul McCartney – Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
8. Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine
9. Ladytron – Witching Hour
10. Dungen - Ta Det Lugnt (US Re-release)

"Subjectivity is a beautiful thing that should be embraced more. It’s easier than trying to be an objective 'journalist,' and any asshole can do it. As an asshole who likes music, I feel it’s my duty to spout off a bunch of albums and tell you they were the best ones released in 2005. Here are my top five accompanied by five words of retrospection, followed by a decent amount of other albums that I can remember liking from last year.

1. Silver Mt. Zion - Horses in the Sky - Canadian ex-patriots warble the best.
2. Jesu - Jesu - Shoegazers can wear combat boots.
3. Akron/Family / Angels of Light - Akron/Family / Angels of Light - Beards are here to stay.
4. Sunn 0))) - Black One - Shake me harder, Lord Satan.
5. Kallikak Family - May 23 2007 - Field recordings? Electronics? Guitars? Sweet.

Animal Collective - Feels
Baroness - Second
Black Mountain - Black Mountain
Blueprint - 1988
Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
Boris with Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave
Castanets - First Light’s Freeze
Cerberus Shoal - The Land We All Believe In
Clorox Girls - This Dimension
Dälek - Absence
The Decemberists - Picaresque
DeYarmond Edison - Silent Signs
Dirty Three - Cinder
Earth - Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method
Earthless - Sonic Prayer
The Evens - The Evens
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings
Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
Little Brother - The Minstrel Show
Lucero - Nobody’s Darling’s
Magnolia Electric Co. - What Comes After the Blues
Magnolia Electric Co. - Hard to Love a Man
M.I.A. - Arular
Mice Parade - Bem-Vinda Vontade
Mogwai - Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
