did anyone else see Shaun Alexander during the pro bowl pratice wear a pathers hat and giving interviews? I was shocked, if we could free up some cap room/re work some contracts, and out bid seatle, it could happen. I think he wants to be in carolina, just my 2 cents.

wearing another teams hat when you're thinking about renegotiating your contract is rather insulting to Seattle. I seriously doubt they'd make him much of an offer after a stunt like that. 2/12/2006 12:13:20 AM |

It sounds to me like he's using Carolina as leverage to re-sign in Seattle.
I expect him to be a Seahawk.
I think he's a great back, but he's got some mileage on him and he's gonna want a big deal.
I'd just assume see us add a badly needed WR like Koren Robinson, a competent RB, some O-line help, and fill in some gaps on defense rather than blow our whole wad on Shaun.
If you saw the Seattle-Carolina game you know that even a Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson couldnt have averaged 4 yards a carry for us that game. Address the o-line first... you can sneeze and find a good RB in the NFL. Look at Samkon fucking Gado for gado's sake. 2/12/2006 2:43:48 AM |

I like TJ but he's every bit as injury prone as Foster.
He's definitely not an every down back...
If we added him I imagine we'd be looking for a finesse back in the draft or thru free agency as well.
Regardless, I trust the Panthers management. They've done a near perfect job addressing our needs the past few offseasons... 2/12/2006 2:57:40 AM |

So everyone is trying to get rid of Delhomme? I mean really? Yeah he is not the greatest, but he is atop the best in the league right now. Before the NFC championship game look at his ratings and stats for playoff games.
Those who claim JD is is not worthwhile, are not lookin at the whole picture...He can only throw to Smith b/c there is no one else...another speddy dependable receiver (preferably one with height 6'2 & above) will open up option in passing and running game that would make JD look elite.
JD also needs 2 dependable RB's that can play 13-15 games in regular season. (gotta leave room for bruises, ankles, knees causing RB to sit and rest a game). We need 150-175 yds rushing a game - NO not just one player, but as an ground average). If we can at least get a plaer who can average 100 a game then hello...passing game opens up and with 2 receivers...game is wide open.
And one more element that is really aggravating me is we have no TE anymore. I really miss the Walls factor. Our OL will look 75% percent better if we had a TE than can smash it up in the middle, help out the Tackles on outside blitzes and stunts and also go out in the flats and make that athletic move to make that catch.
Lets recap...(1) we don't need a great receiver...just a dependable WO with hands, height and speed (KO probably not my first choice b/c of past behavior, but hey we did a hell of a job getting Smith on track so I can work with him). Not to mention we have Colbert...get him some off season practice in NFL Europe - Come back an allstar (2) Another RB that can last the season...preferably a power runner...we need someone with heart to smash some heads...But I can take alexander and run with him. (3) A TE...someone that does not have to come off the field, someone who can block and catch-keep the Def honest.

See this whole thing just doesnt make sense to me,
Alexander isnt a back that is looking to take hits like fox is going to want.
i mean, hes a great back and all, but he was behind a fantastic line in Sea. He's not a s. Davis like back where hes going to pound the ball up the gut. I know that Foster is closer to his style, but it doest seem like alexander really fits the panthers style 2/14/2006 8:24:12 AM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
I really dont think he's coming here.
We'd have to essentially mortgage our future to free up enough space.
I know Peppers will re-structure and by cutting Davis and not re-signing Foster we could make JUST enough room to fit Shaun into budget... but we'd be in a tight squeeze in 2-3 years when St. Smith, Delhomme, Peppers, morgan, alexander, etc deals all escalate. We have enough young talent that there is no reason to throw all our eggs in the Shaun Alexander panic basket.
Signing Shaun isnt a good move from a salary cap standpoint and the Panthers have made sound cap decisions the last three years. I jsut dont see this happening.
On the other hand, I wouldnt be too upset landing the reigning NFL MVP (even if it was a sham)...
The correct decsion, i.e. the one that would make us the NFC favorite: Sign Koren, acquire a FA competent (cost efficient) running back, sign an OL, draft a TE first (deep TE pool), and find a veteran LB or S (depending on where we plan to start Davis).
In the second and third rounds we could find another RB giving us a veteran, a rookie, and the fat guy from Louisville and a DT to give us depth in case Jenkins gets hurt again (I like Carstens, but Buckner needs a backup if Jenkins goes down)
This would give us one of the top offenses and defenses in the league.

^Totally agree with Rally...I am thinking now that I don't really want Alexander b/c he does not bang up the middle or like to get hit that much as our offensive style does...and the cap room. What RB's out there that under the age of 27/28 that give good depth and speed at the position?

do you want speed or someone that bangs up the middle? alexander is the most balanced back in the league. carolina could be successful with him if they molded their running game to fit him rather than vice versa. it isn't completley out of the question for a team to modify their gameplan to suit one of the top players in the league. but you're right, with no changes to their style, alexander is not a great fit in carolina. jamal lewis would be a better fit there, if he isn't 100% washed up at this point. or duce staley, because i don't think pittsburgh is going to keep paying him to ride the bench there. 2/14/2006 9:16:07 AM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
^ i dont want either of those two guys.
Id rather go into the season with a stable of untested rookies and no names than overpriced washed up guys who will be on the IR by week 4 (Staley) or chugging along for 3.5 yards per carry (Lewis)
And the more I think about it I think we should take a TE in round 2 and get a DT or LB/S in round 1.
For the love of god jsut dont draft a WR in round one. That wont help us at ALL for next year, rookie WR's normally suck and we've already got plenty of WR's who suck (Colbert/Carter)

Someone said that TE are deep in draft this year...I did not get to watch much college football this year. Who is out there worthwhile that will be around for us to pick up in 2nd round? I would rather have a TE that can come in and fight and most likely start week 1.
To the question of if I want speed and a banger? I want some that can hit the hole hard and break away from LB's and make moves in the open field.
I agree...no more WR in draft, but need a solid one to put beside Smith. Colbert and Carter got a big upside...who heard of Smith before the Panthers SB season? Just need somone around to train and teach them who to make pro moves.

^^maybe the reason all your backs end up on IR is that great "pound it up the middle" style of yours. stephen davis couldnt even handle it.
if i'm carolina, i pay alexander and alter my running style a little. maybe draft a good o-lineman or two. 2/14/2006 9:59:40 AM |

^ Davis is old and injury prone at his age. Foster got hurt trying to cut to the outside. I dont think that our backs injuries are a result of our running up the middle style, just random incidents 2/14/2006 10:53:54 AM |

and everyone talks about alexander not pounding the ball up the middle as if it's a weakness. that's probably the exact reason why he hasn't missed a start in his career (pro-bowl excluded). he has proven he can be more than effective without having to pound it up the middle.
