skin color is largely arbitrary, but I imagine pale people in arid regions were sunburned and less likely to get it on as much as the darkies. really, don't think of evolution as something that happens to an animal, but an observation of a set of average expectations. Whatever's sexy gets reproduced. Whatever is sexy about what comes of that is more likely to get reproduced... exponentiate all the times diseased, stupid embodiments of a species get ignored in favor of the tall, strong, virile, capable embodiments, and the race moves in that direction. Surroundings and bizarre factors determine what will be repeatably sexy....

More than likely because the northern regions of the earth had less sun. You need sun to produce Vitamin D, and dark skin blocks the sun. So in areas with less sunlight, people with lighter skin were healthier and more likely to survive.

The thing that really gets me is when they use the hoax/mistake human ancestors as evidence against evolution. Yeah, someone faked a skull once. That doesn't make the entire idea bogus. The important thing to remember is that the scientific community recognizes its blunders as hoaxes and mistakes. Those guys in the video don't seem to realize that in science it's okay to be wrong. In fact, nothing makes professors happier than the thought of proving their colleagues wrong. Failure is just as important as success.

And the video even uses the old Creationist favorite, giving some out of context quotes. At least they didn't use the Second Law of Thermodynamics argument, I might've had to choke a bitch.

basically, dark skin prevents the destruction of folate that occurs due to exposure to UV-radiation. low levels of folate are directly related to a higher incidence of spina bifida. dark skin also protects sweat glands, etc from UV radiation. in contrast, pale skin allows for more synthesis of Vitamin D (which prevents rickets).
