the entire place minus the myers park area. I went to the Milestone the other day and got lost. When a black lady has a stroller and is walking her kid around at 1 in the morning you know you're in the ghetto.

Besides being the state capital, Raleigh does not have much going for it. I don't understand the downtown revitalization movement - What kind of business will be attracted to an area that is...lackluster..and lacking hotels. 2/20/2006 7:44:55 PM |

yo, charlotte and raleigh are both great places. better than a lot of others especially dying cities in the midwest/great lakes region...
here's a list of buildings and projects for downtown raleigh: http://www.raleighmsa.com/newProjects-downtown.html
http://www.raleighmsa.com/newProjects-raleigh.html
charlotte has a bigger downtown because banking companies need/want the high profile buildings. raleigh is sprawling because high tech companies want the large campuses. raleigh is becoming more diverse. there was also an article in the news and observer today talking about people buying "air rights" in raleigh to develop upwards
http://www.newsobserver.com/104/story/402422.html
also, the new york times did an article on the up and coming glenwood south area. if you do a search on their website for charlotte, they haven't written anything on the cultural scene going on there.
http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/travel/12surfacing.html
anyway, i think both cities are great. raleigh is definitely behind in terms of downtown revitalization. but there's a lot of momentum with glenwood south and that will continue through the fayetteville street area when that construction is done. 2/20/2006 10:11:17 PM |

Raleigh is where Charlotte was 15 years ago. When i moved to charlotte there wasnt shit (no condos downtown, no big buildings, no where to go) and now its going somewhere. Give Raleigh 10 years and it should be past where Charlotte is. 2/20/2006 11:04:29 PM |

yeah I believe Raleigh will take off in a few years. The one thing I liked more about Raleigh is that there was like 3 of everything within like 20 mins. You had Glenwood, Cary, Garner(growing), and Capital
maybe I'm just still getting used to Charlotte but I know I'm less tempted to go to places like Best Buy and Circuit City b/c it's a hassle to get there no matter what time of day it is
Birkdale Village is cool tho if you don't mind being around high schoolers walking around in packs like they own the place 2/20/2006 11:11:19 PM |

Huntersville is nice. 5 minutes to the lake 20 to downtown.
Anyone that says Charlotte is going downhill simply doesn't know what they are talking about. Raleigh is a nice hometown but Charlotte has a lot more to offer. The niceties of the uptown area are spreading very fast. An example is the old MidTown Mall, being torn down and turned into another Birkdale, or the 100-story Wachovia just starting up, etc..
Charlotte is a young professional type of town. I don't think anyone is pushing the college scene in the area. I up and moved here from Raleigh and wish I had all my friends closer, but I love the city.
btw...I heard they are building 18 BB's in the charlotte area in the next few years. I hate having to drive to get to one also.

Seriously, while I somewhat agree with the thread, what is the point? Of course people who have lived in Raleigh forever are gonna get pissed off when someone says Charlotte is the best city ever and Raleigh is a dump... what else was to be expected?
Personally, I like the Triangle better (my parents home for 5 years in Wakefield was nice and the area is incredibly nice) but wouldn't want to settle in any part of North Carolina ultimately (for many factors -- mostly superficial). If I was a kid right out of school about to start working in my field I'd rather be in Charlotte though, for obvious reasons. 2/21/2006 8:31:10 AM |

I read somewhere they are modeling it after the San Francisco trolley car system.. is that right? If so, that's so fuckign stupid. While it looks really cool and is part of SF it is so fucking inefficient. During busy times at some stops (mainly near Pier 39 to the Embarcadero) you're better off walking the 2-3 miles because it will be an hour until you even find a car with space on it to get in..
They should do a real transit system if they are serious about it being efficient and not just for looks..
** ok I just looked it up.. Have those trolleys opened already? I see they are doing that AND a light commuter rail.. that's a bit better at least..

Last summer I lived a little past Ballentyne and worked downtown. Some days, if my timing was off, the commute could take 1.5 hours each way. Definetely why I chose to live downtown. Anyways, lets not forget that there is a Ritz Carlton being built in Charlotte. What does Raleigh have - Airport Marriot and an Outback? 2/21/2006 9:13:54 AM |

Charlotte's growing faster than Raleigh, so in 15 years that shit will be much bigger. Light rail, new skyscrapers, etc. already being built.

You people. There's more to a city than buildings and transit. There's vibe and soul, and there's just more of that in Raleigh. 2/21/2006 11:40:30 AM |

^^ NCSU students have a skewed perception of Raleigh by and large. Nearly ALL of North Raleigh (Wakefield, Durant, etc, etc) is transplants. Literally everyone in my parents neighborhood was from OH, PA, NY, NJ, MA, or CT.. Not saying that is a good thing but most State students from Charlotte have never once seen the nicer areas of the Triangle..
Charlotte is a nice little city but it has a ways to go before being a cool city relative to the rest of the country..

I transferred to NCSU from Case Western in Cleveland about a year and a half ago. I transferred cause my parents moved down here from Boston and I love North Carolina.
A shitload of people in the Triangle are not from North Carolina. There's a reason Cary stands for the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. I've met so many people from different parts of the country. Just drive around Crossroads or Triangle Town Center and count the out of state cars you see. Those are probably all people in the process of moving here.
Wake County is growing by 68 people every day. Any place that is growing that quickly is having an influx of non-local people.
If this area wasn't filled with people who moved here out of state, I doubt that Raleigh could support 5 hockey rinks (other than RBC)... Garner has 1, Wake Forest has 1, Cary has 1, Raleigh has 2.

As long as Charlotte doesn't go all whackjob like Durham and Cary WRT gun laws, I think it'll turn out fine. The restaurants aren't great, though (lots of White People Food, not so much anything else), and the only business around is banking/commerce. No high tech to speak of.
The Triangle's where the actual interesting stuff will be, but Charlotte is here to stay as a transport and commerce hub.
