Pinehurst is actually a really tiny village...there's nothing in pinehurst except some condos, some houses, and 5 or 6 golf courses. Southern pines is the city.

Our fans may get on our coaches when things aren't going well, but that's because the fans are passionate and really care about the school/program. But even when things aren't going well, our fans generally still show good support for the team and program (though maybe not the coach at those times). Even in the Les years and the early Herb years when we didn't go to the NCAAs for around a decade, our fans still showed up to sell out Reynolds and the RBC. Compare that to other schools' fan support for programs that aren't "winning" programs (eg, Miami and FSU basketball, Duke football, and the woeful fan support for UNC football during those seasons a few years back when they won only 2 and 3 games). There is a big difference between supporting the team/school and the coach. Sometimes you have to oppose the coach for the good of the team/program.

I'm not offended at all with attempted insults of "hillbilly"/"redneck" (even though those making the insult are clearly intenteding to offend). I take it as a complement. Especially when coming from non-whites. All that insult expresses is a hatred for "conservative"/"country" white folk. And I think you'll notice that these type of people like being called "rednecks" (eg, Jeff Foxworthy comic routine).

I consider it a privelege and an honor to be from the tiny town of North Wilkesboro. I am NOT a hillbilly, since I grew up with running water, indoor plumbing, and electricity. I love the history and heritage that comes with my hometown, and I am proud to be from there. For anyone to call me a hillbilly or a hick is their complete and utter ignorance.

In the minds of those attempting to insult white people by calling them "rednecks" or "hillbilly", what are the qualities one needs to possess in order to be a "redneck" or "hillbilly"? Most of the time, it seems all you have to be is: white, of the middle to lower economic class, and probably "conservative."

If that's the definition of a "redneck" or "hillbilly", then by all means I am one. I'm damn proud to be white (not in the racial superiority sense, but just having pride in my own people and culture) and conservative. And there's nothing wrong with being middle to lower class.

It's kind of hard to see how the label is insulting really. If a person is using that term in a deragatory sense, it probably just means that they hate conservative white people or white people who aren't of the "middle to upper crust" of society. So what if they hate you? Fine, let them hate you for those reasons. Those are good reasons to be hated.
