Damnit this is killing me. I got a fucking 6800 GS OC'd in my desk and a damn Athlon 3700+ processor sitting next to it, and it'll be about a week and a half for the shitty mobo comes back from NewEgg so I can rebuild and pwn this game.

so far, i haven't had any problems with it...using the geforce 6200 i just put in, i'm not experiencing any issues with video lag during gameplay, though the movie at the very beginning was a bit choppy...i am, however, limited to an 800x600 resolution, which kinda sucks, but i'll survive

Anyone found good places to rob? I want to loot some people (both to get my security/sneak skills up and make cash), but I haven't found any really profitable places yet.

spoilers

when you go to find the heir, do you have to go into the gate to oblivion. Only reason I ask is because I got my ass handed to me in there as soon as I stepped in. The only reason I didnt die was because of that NPC that comes outta nowhere.

Makes me think I am not supposed to do that part yet.

You're talking about that early quest to locate Martin in Kvatch, right?

If so, yeah, you have to go in. I didn't think it was that bad, but if your character isn't ready for it then go level up somewhere else first.

Not exactly sure, but it was really early in my game. I didn't spend much time wandering around before I did the first few storyline quests.

you dont have to go to oblivion. you can walk into kvatch just by walking around the gate. i got my ass handed to me walking into kvatch alone though so i went to oblivion and closed the gate. doing that will have the guards help you in kvatch.

that said you cannot get THE EYE OF SAURON without going into oblivion. i did it all at lvl 2/3, though archery helps a ton.

quagmire02, are you saying that Oblivion will run better on an AGP GeForce 6800 rather than a PCI-ex version? how does that work? just curious, have not clicked the link yet. Well I guess I should ask the guys who came up with the ranking.

I maxed all the settings at 1280x1024 and got decent performance, but then I came out of the game and my videocard temperature was 68 degrees celcius!!!!

At what temperature should I be worried?

damn, you fuckers got far... haha. I havent even made it to Chorall (sp) yet... Did you all do the fast travel option or manually go there? I am doing it manually just to get a good look at the game.

What kind of card do you have?

My 6800GT tends to run in the 60s when I'm playing games. I've got the alarm on it set for 100.

^I've been doing a ton of fast travel while doing quests. I've done the scenic route for a couple of lengthy trips, though, just to enjoy the countryside. Found several new places that way, too.

From what I've read, the weapons/armor that you find are based on your level. So if you're early in the game, you can't just go grab the really powerful stuff right away.

Morrowind had some issues with that...with decent sneak/steal/telekinesis abilities, you could stock up on some incredibly strong/valuable stuff very early in the game. Kind of unbalances it a little, which I guess is why they changed it.

ati x800xt PE, I thought maxing everything would cripple the performance, but its not THAT bad. But I think I will tone it down some.

we both bought it at the same time and were playing in opposite rooms. we were both level 1's and he was able to use the stuff.

i just thought it was weird that there wasnt even a dead dude there for me.

Ya, considering the radiant AI engine the dead guard was probably the outcome of a random unscripted event like an attack or dispute of some sort.

Lockpicking's actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. My security skill is really low (around 20 right now, after my latest stealing spree) and I can bust into "Very Hard" locks without much difficulty.

When you push the tumbler up, watch how fast it moves. When it goes up slowly, hit the button and it'll lock into place. Then just move on to the next tumbler.

The key is to watch the tumblers for awhile so you get a feel for how they're supposed to move.

so each one can move up at different speeds?? I mean, can one tumbler move fast one time, then slow the next and the key is to click the time when it moves up slow?

don't know anything about the AGP vs. PCI-E thing (though i would assume that PCI-E would automatically be better just because), but the two video cards on that list that i tried were at the levels the guy said they would be at (very low was unacceptable, but a "low" card has been working just fine as long as you don't mind only running 800x600 )

Yeah, each time you push a tumbler up, it goes either fast or slow, randomly. If you try clicking when it's moving fast, the lockpick will snap and the lock will reset. Just push one up several times and watch it to see what I'm talking about.

So i installed Oblivion on my

Athlon64 3500+ (2.2ghz)
1gig ram
6600GT

a pretty mid-range system, and it ran like shit. Complete shit, complete with crashes.

I formatted, ran AWESOME..with some slowdowns...

I went into cmos and changed the AGP aperature to 256 (over 128) and HOLY SHIT! im running 1024X768 With Bloom on with no slowdowns and 30+FPS in 95% of the game. This is great!

4400+ X2
2 gigs ram
6600 GT

Runs moderately well... Wondering if I should get better performance. Roommate with:

3000+ FX-55 (I think 55? Or is it 57?)
1 gig ram
6600 GT

Runs about the same as mine. Bottleneck in the video card?

Not really, those two setups shouldn't run very differently anyways. He's got a better gaming processor and you've got more ram. The fx-55 and fx-57 generally outperform your 4400 x2 in gaming benchmarks although oblivion is supposed to be SLIGHTLY optimized for multi core cpu's (slightly being the words of the developers.)

I'm sure if both of you got the same better video card you'd see similarly better performance, and it'd still be about the same.

I know a guy at bethesda that worked on oblivion, unfortunately he was an artist not a programmer so he probably can't help with all the problems.

I'll direct him to this thread though, see if he can help out with some of your fps issues.
