...so since getting 2 and 3 star athletes obviously isn't working, maybe we should be worried that we aren't getting ANY 5-stars3/29/2006 10:19:13 PM |

We have two kickers in this class. They weren't rated, but some people are saying we have the nation's best kicking class this year. 3/30/2006 10:02:30 AM |

Yeah one of the kickers is from Connor Barth's high school and is believed to be better than he is.
The other is from Georgia and I really do not know anything about him. 3/30/2006 12:09:14 PM |

Franklin is a punter, don't know much about him
I've heard that Cjakwoski or however the hell you pronounce it is very very good.
There were only like 6 kickers that were higher than 3 stars.. I don't think they put too much care into ranking them. Unless you're above and beyond like a Janikowski or Nugent, they pretty much throw you in a basket together and focus on the skill positions

^ Yep.
Probably would have been had he not come from a 1-A high school. I think he finished up as the #11 RB in his class 3/30/2006 12:24:05 PM |

The only ones I can think of...
1) Elijah Dukes - 2000 (I think) LB - Never enrolled... pro baseball instead 2) Richard Washington 3) Demario Pressley 4) Toney Baker 5) AJ Davis
Others: - Derek Morris - Didn't commit here, but transferred here - Brandon Jeffries - transferred here, but never had the grades to enroll.
Also, what about Koren Robinson? I think he was a 4* RB... but he may have been a 5...?

tramain was def a 5 star 3/30/2006 12:33:13 PM |

I think Tramain was only a 4* CB. His bio on scout shows it as a 4 star, but it's also been changed becuase he was a JUCO when he came in. It's not his original bio.
...and I thought Koren was pretty highly touted? Didn't he have offers from just about every school on the East coast? He was nasty at South Point 3/30/2006 12:35:24 PM |

rayrob, krob, priv
and i am 90% sure thall was a 5* cornerback/rb coming out of high school
also, greg golden was highly recruited but not a 5* i dont think 3/30/2006 12:39:06 PM |

you guys realize that you can see most of this stuff back to like 2001 or 2002 on packpride right?
maybe not if they dropped, but you can see how many stars they had when they committed. 3/30/2006 1:18:15 PM |

Yeah, that's the way it seems. It's a little weird that they do it that way, because kicking is one of the things that isn't dependent on the level of competition.
But on the other hand, kickers aren't going to have as much of an impact as a star QB/RB/DE/WR/etc.3/30/2006 1:37:51 PM |

Just to refresh everyone's memory, PRiv was a 3-star and our highest rated recruit in that class. We were competing mostly with schools like ECU and Duke for recruits under Mike O'Cain.
O'Cain had a great eye for unheralded talent, though. Guys like Torry, KRob, Levar Fisher and Adrian Wilson were incredible finds.
It just shows how far our recruiting has come along that we've signed a handful of 5-star and countless 4-star recruits over the last 5 years. Unfortunately this recruiting success has not translated to wins lately.

^this is football. you have to be pretty deep with quality talent all around. A couple of good players is not going to do it. You definitely can't be starting freshman on the lines, either. 3/30/2006 7:29:26 PM |
PackBacker All American 14415 Posts user info edit post |
Yup.
I'd rather get 20 3-star guys than 10 5-stars and 10 1-star guys any day.
Your QB and RB are only as good as your line (Unless you're Barry Sanders or Jim Brown)... your WR's are only as good as your QB (See: NC State), your LB's are only as good as your D-Line, etc.etc.
One good recruiting haul isn't going to do it. It takes years of stockpiling talent to win consistently. This year's class we just signed was supposed to be for depth only, really... then everyone left for the NFL 3/30/2006 7:33:40 PM |

^that comment would apply to 2003, not the last 2 years though. Our recruiting classes have been in the top 35 or 40 for 5 years running. We had a pretty stacked roster on paper last year but we couldn't get it done.
^^What freshman started on the lines last year? The year before?
Pressley had a start or 2 in '04. Last year I know Crouch got some time, but I don't remember if he ever started.

Last year: Pressley, Crouch, Baker, Brown, as well as breaking in an entirely new secondary. Not to mention moving DLinemen over to play OLine (Herndon)
The year before that.... the entire defensive line were freshmen (McCargo was redshirted, Mario, and I think that was Manny's first year on the DLine?...)...
It's not horrible to start freshmen in certain positions, but you really really don't want inexperience on the DLine, OLine, QB, or Secondary.

Your years are all mixed up.
Pressley was a sophomore last year.
Crouch was the only freshman to get significant time on either the OL or DL.
2 years ago Mario and McCargo were sophomores, and Manny was a junior.
it was 3 years ago ('03) when we had that freshman DLine. 3/30/2006 7:55:20 PM |

aha...wow. I fucked up bad
Our depth hasn't really been a problem except the OLine and LBer. We shouldn't have DLinemen having to move to OLine after 2-3 years in the program.... not good.
Our DLine depth is now pretty screwed becuase of people who never qualified (i.e. Chad Green, Setzer, etc.)

but those moves weren't just because we didnt' have anyone else to play OL. Herndon was moved to give some "experience" to the OL, some more leadership. And supposedly the coaches felt that he would do better at OL than DL. The same thing with Locklear, and look how that move turned out.3/31/2006 7:41:37 AM |

^are you dumb? that's the whole point. We didn't have experienced depth at that position, and we had to pull guys from elsewhere to get it 3/31/2006 9:08:37 AM |
