Weight training can increase your metabolism for up to 24 hours and, if done at the right pace, can count as cardio as well. I've had success by doing a few sets of weight training in the morning to get things going before work and additional cardio in the evening after work. I just use pushups, lunges (holding 50lbs of weights), and a couple of excercise ball excercises in the morning so that I don't have to go to the gym.3/30/2006 1:33:18 PM |

well, exercise (whether you want to believe it or not) is invasive (not in the traditional sense of "i'm gonna cut you open"), but in the sense that the forces placed upon someone's body during exercise are transferred to the bone and then to the joints (invasive?)...so, if a person's biomechanics aren't on point, they're setting your themselves up for joint degradation over time...a person who says, "i'm good at doing x (sport/exercise), so i think i'm qualified to teach another individual" is confusing their experience of practicing said sport with learning about the components of said sport...yeah, they can train themselves but can they properly microprogess someone that is 20 lbs. overweight???
and yes, some elite athletes (even triathletes) are totally ignorant of biomechanics, nutrition, physiology, etc....most of the time this occurs when when someone is genetically gifted and another person coaches/trains them and the athlete follows blindly...i'm not saying this is true of Liu, i'm just saying it does happen and not to assume because someone is "good" or looks fit they are geniuses at prescribing exercise...
i'm not here to credit or discredit Liu in any way...he's the one that said i had "money in my eyes" and that "trainers are a waste of money" (not ver batim)...if he had a rationale behind his statements then maybe i could concede to one or both of his points...as of yet, i haven't heard a rationale...
ultimately, the reason i posted was to help this girl lose weight...my suggestion to the woman was that a person can achieve weight loss quicker with a competent trainer (could be me or someone else)...

To answer the original girls post:
Get a heart rate monitor. Run at least 20 minutes every time you run, keep your heart rate in the fat burning zone (the monitor will show you how to calculate this).
Eat better.
Lift weights to supplement the running.
Swim to help your cardiovascular system keep up with the legs for running and to keep your body limber. Or pilates, or yoga, or any other cross training you enjoy.
And expect losing 20 pounds to take you probably 8-12 weeks to do it right. 3/30/2006 1:44:26 PM |

You can find them at Target (Timex brand) for about $45 bucks, REI sells them for 50-90 (Timex) and Polar brands for 130-300. You can probably get one online for 35-50 bucks. All you need is a cheap timex one, i use a 70 dollar timex and it works fine.
Just keep in mind, 99% of the time, the HR monitor part will have a dead battery out of the box, so youll have to go get a new one (they all use a CR-2032 battery, like 3 bucks at radioshack)3/30/2006 8:15:35 PM |

dont take in any calcium. bone weighs more than fat and youll not burn fat that way, just build bones underneath it.
^ Muscle is good. A pound of muscle burns approximately 35 calories a day just by existing. Add 10 lbs of muscle and you'll burn an extra 2/3 of a pound of fat per week (all things being equal.) Besides, it looks good in the right proportions. 3/31/2006 12:49:22 AM |

a pound of fat = a pound of muscle, a pound of muscle = a pound of fat (weight-wise; assuming we're on this planet where gravity is relatively constant)....now, if you're talking about weight/volume ratio then that's a horse of a different color...all i've read seems to indicate that fat is slightly more dense than muscle, but who the hell cares?!!! beyond the essential fat you need to function daily, the rest has little purpose in today's society (unless you think there is going to be a famine sometime soon)...muscle, on the other hand, can increase your resting metabolic rate throughout the day...in other words, the person with a more developed musculature will have a higher calorie burn while being sendentary than a person w/ less muscle...also, it seems a lot of people think that people with muscle are HUGE...not true, hypertrophy is a goal that many people have, but a lot of it is dependent on genetics and how a person trains their body...
Quote : | "bone weighs more than fat and youll not burn fat that way, just build bones underneath it." | god, i hope you were joking!
as long as a person is on this earth and having force applied to their body (be it gravity, a barbell, or some other source), their body will continually be building and replacing bone...they can't stop it or modify this process in any way unless they try to deprive the body of essential nutrients and break down the bone matrix...which is very (sorry, i hate using this word) stupid! bone probably does weigh more per volume than fat...again, who the hell cares? first off, without bone, you'd just be a jelly-filled sack on the sidewalk (it provides our structure)...secondly, bone is a very small part of our total weight, volume, or mass so trying to modify the smallest components of the body (out of muscle, fat, or bone) isn't going to have much impact (weight-wise)....if you're that desperate to lose weight, just donate some damn organs or something even farther along the stupid scale....3/31/2006 9:29:44 AM |

You will not burn a signifigant amount of fat just lifting weights, and chicks dont typically want to be built up anyway, so fuck you guys 3/31/2006 6:36:22 PM |

Muscle glycogen, the first fuel recruited when exercise commences, remains intact overnight.
Assuming your workout starts in the morning, you can have a banana or a snack to top off liver glycogen stores, which your body has expended during your night of sleep.
There is nothing controversial about training in the morning. (i.e. Military, Pro Athletes, etc.)
You need to take in fuel and hydrate to sustain prolonged exercise--just like any other time of the day.

you don't need to eat anything before exercise after you wake up. your muscle glycogen stores are full.
the feeling of hunger when you wake up does not come from low muscle glycogen stores.
and operating on a full stomach is worse than an empty stomach.
