"Dude...you were three fucking years old last time we won a title. I was in my mother's womb...big fuckin deal.

I know we've had a couple great teams...I use to listen to my grandfather and great uncle talk about going to the championship games in '74 and '83. My listened to my dad staying up to the wee hours of the morning watching our amazing games in the '83 tourney. I know our fucking history.

That being said...it's not like we're a top 5 program history wise. But that doesn't mean I expect greatness either. I'm just realistic. The only way we compete with Duke or UNC RIGHT NOW...is to hire a big time coach. We can't hire a big time coach. Any coach we hire right now will keep us running in the same place or drop us a notch or two."

I was actually 5 when we won in '83 and I was a Clemson fan at the time. I'm just not willing to accept that since our last National Championship was in '83, we shouldn't aspire to ever achieve that again. Thats exactly what we're doing.

Serious Question: Do any of you Sendek supporters actually see us winning an NCAA Title? How about an ACC Tourney Title?

I can't. And I'm not excited about watching our program accept mediocrity (and an NCAA Participation Ribbon is mediocrity).

There is also no basis for saying we can't hire a big name coach. Until Herb is no longer the coach, we won't know that. And there are plenty of hot commodaties at mid-majors (like Herb was) that would jump at the chance. Its not like you start from scratch. We've got good players at State. A new coach just needs to pick up where Herb left off and take us to that next level occasionally.

I don't want to be known as the University that didn't want to take a chance on greatness because they would be throwing away mediocrity. I want to be the University that goes after greatness because we expect it.

Just goes to show how easy it is to distort numbers in your favor. Herb has the 3rd longest tenure of any ACC coach. Of course, he'd be 3rd on this list. The 4th longest tenure isn't close.

I love when people post meaningless and/or misleading stats. This one is right up there with the "1 of 2 NCSU coaches to make 5 consecutive NCAAs!"

Career win total tracks pretty closely with tenure (imagine that). The next longest tenure to his 10 years is Skip Prosser's 5 years. If any Prosser had gained more wins in half the time than Sendek, THAT would be a meaningful stat.

He has the longest tenure of any active ACC coach without an ACC or National Championship. I can turn these stats around all day.

I'm not one of the ones clamoring for Herb to be fired, but let's not kid ourselves about Herb being an outstanding coach in ACC or NCSU history.

Seeing that we've been in the ACC tourney final a bazillion times already...yeah I see us winning a title.

NCAA title?? I mean...why not. If fucking George Mason can make it to the Final Four...why can't we?? Our recruiting right now is the best it's ever been. What sucks is that we're going to lose the best PG we've had in here since Chris Corchiani because of this. Chris Wright is the shit, and he'll probably go to Nova after this shit.

Quote :

Actually...there's a lot of basis. First, there aren't a lot of big time coaches available. Second, NC State has NEVER hired a big name coach. We always get "up and comers". The only teams that hire "big name" coaches are teams that are top 10 programs nationally. UNC, Kansas, UCLA...those are teams that can hire big name coaches. A big name coach doesn't want to come to Raleigh and fight a consistent uphill battle against Duke and UNC with dumb ass fans calling for his head every year we make the tourney.

Not saying that we can't hire a big name coach...but I'd put about a 7% chance of it happening.

Finish, how are you going to come on here being 2 or 3 years older then a lot of us and claim we don't know the history of our school?? You even admitted you weren't a State fan growing up... just like me.

I was a fan of a school who has the same amount of national championships the last 7 years as NC State has in our history so I know what it's like to strive for championships. No one here thinks we don't have the facilities, history (though that has NOTHING to do with it), etc, etc to compete for championships. We do and those who still support Herb thinks he WILL get us to that level. It could be something as simple as an offense change or finally having a worthy PG (which I hope he realizes it's NCSU he committed to and not Herb Sendek) but I really do think it is the next step. I know I'll get called an idiot/faggot/piece of shit by the mob for this opinion but I could give a shit less..

I just don't think we are better off jumping in to a relatively weak coaching pool. A lateral or backwards move does NOTHING but give us 5-10 MORE years for a coach to prove himself.

I guess I look at it like this.. if there was a strong pool of coaches that we KNOW are available (Urban Meyer, Charlie Weiz type bball coaches) then I would be all for a move.. I just don't see a Barnes or a Calipari coming here THIS YEAR. In as much as I don't see them coming I don't see the benefits of having to 'settle' for a coach that is going to give us similar results..

If Herb decides to leave I'll wish him well and move on to the next coach!..

This post is a perfect microcosm for sendek's basketball. It's like when a team breaks out the press on us -- our team gets scared and panicked. Better teams see this as an opportunity for easy points.

Hopefully the people controlling any coaching search won't be scared little shits like this poster, and they will see that this is a chance to significantly upgrade the quality of basketball played at NCSU.

This could be the greatest April Fool's gift EVER.

Seriously, I don't even care if we win 2 games next season. At least it'll be a change. I'm ready for something different. And hopefully something that develops into a banner-hanging.

my only concern is when we only win 2 games everyone's like "WAHHHHHHHHHH WE WANT HERB BACK". That's the WRONG attitude right there.

Hopefully we clearly tell the new coach that he has to do better than sendek in at most 5 years, or he is gone. It's fair to give him time to get his recruits on the roster. He does have a somewhat full cupboard coming in, too.

Well said.

I also think in terms of considering Herb's offer and his likelihood to leave, it isn't like the salary difference is all the compensation Herb gets. NCSU coaches tend to get as much or more from endorsements, etc. than from salary. Not sure if that is the case at ASU.

ASU is in a major conference.

Their compensation packages are more than likely very similar to the one Herb has here at State. Only coaches like K and Roy get ridiculous compensation packages.

If I were Herb I would be so outta here if they offered me more than NCSU is offering...he's got nothing to lose & everything go gain. Plus, Tempe is a beautiful place & AZ is definitely a happenin' place to be a millionaire.

BTW, we should get Beilien from WVU. He already runs our style of offense so Werner would probably still come here, and he can actually compete. His Moutaineers ran us OVER last year.

Only things I can see holding Herb back are his kids staying in the same school sysem(how old are they again?), his wife loving the area, and maybe getting a matching salary from NCSU (or somewhere close).

Although, some fans would be fucking IRATE if he got a raise. Personally, I think it would be funny.

Funny, because earlier in the week his name was mentioned as a possible candidate for Oklahoma, and their fans weren't having any of it. Perfect example of what fans with different expectations think sendek can do.

^^^ NO to belein. None of this "small ball" crap, anymore. They had similar problems as we did, such as rebounding. Don't want to bitch about the same thing for another few years. I'd say the difference is that they played with a better killer instinct than we did.

My post was directed at NCSU students. I've been out of school now 6 years. My first year at State was the year we hired Herb. The post was more for people that have been at school a few years and think its great that we've made the tourney.

As far as the history of NC State basketball goes, I consider myself pretty well-versed. As far as Herb goes, I consider myself even more versed. I've been a State fan his entire tenure.

Bottom line, Herb should have been canned after his 5th year. NCAA basketball and football are two different animals. In football, you have over 80 scholarship athletes, and you have 22 different starters. It takes a while to build a strong starting lineup and it takes longer to build depth. In basketball, you need 5 starters and 2-3 decent bench players. Takes significantly less time to build. When Herb failed to make the NCAA after his 5th year, we should have issued his walking papers. That was unacceptable. Especially given the talent we had on that team and the position we were in midway through that season. It took an aforementioned Sendek collapse to make that happen.

You mention that you believe Sendek will take us to that next level. A point guard might change things. Where was this point guard 10 years ago? 5 years ago? Having a solid point guard is a no brainer. We shouldn't put our stock in a coach that finally got his point guard after year 10! Ridiculous. As far as him changing his offense, thats not going to happen. And we shouldn't continue to pay the guy $800k until he figures that out.

As far as big name interest, we won't know until the job opens up. After all, ASU didn't know Herb was available until they asked. He is under contract until 2010.

Quote :
"Seeing that we've been in the ACC tourney final a bazillion times already...yeah I see us winning a title."

We've been there 3 times in Herb's 3 years. I would argue its his best accomplishment. His team in '96 completely overacheived. I really thought Herb would be a great coach after that run. We also had Duke by the balls up by more than 20 at one point in the 2nd half. Herb Happens. We end up losing.

$$$ Talks. If the admin is willing to step up, quit bs'ing about facilties and put $2 million per on the table to lure a name, it would happen. Well worth it.

Our programs were two different animals too. Herb came into the worst program in the ACC. Chuck came into a mediocre program with some future stars. People need to quit bringing football into this argument. I want Chuck here...but I wouldn't use him in an argument against Sendek.

That was my point. Football and basketball shouldn't be compared b/c they offer different challenges to a coach. Clearly though, it is easier to turn around a basketball program than a football program. And our history is in basketball, not football.

State24:

"The tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. Shortly after, we went on probation and had a long span of years without making the tourney. My point is, its not that hard to make the NCAA tournament anymore. So when people say that NC State has only gone 5 consecutive times twice, its not really saying that much. Prior to '74 you had to win the ACC Championship to make the tourney. Tough to do that 5 times in a row. From '75 to about '80 you needed to be one of the top 2 teams in your conference. Since Herb has been at State, you could finish as low as 7th in the ACC some years and make the tourney. So please don't bring this argument up and say we have no history because of this. Thats just being ridiculous.

well...the players arent sure about this

according to some of them i know they havent heard about this becuase Herb hasnt said a word to them, that means one of two things...either hes not going or hes just got word of it andhasnt had time

According to one of them...hes been in talks with ALOT of other schools, according to this player at first it was about 'transfers' of students...but now it seems like its transfer of himself.

I think we have a replacement lined up though already but thats speculative
