Quote : | "Fans' gripes dogged Sendek Complaints seen as factor in leaving
Sendek says switch is for his family.
In the standard "college coach under fire" scenario, you will find major school donors fanning the flames.
During his 10 years as N.C. State men's basketball coach, however, Herb Sendek kept the support of major Wolfpack donors. It was the flaming posts of anonymous Internet message-board users, ranting talk-radio callers and media gibes at his personality and losing record against North Carolina and Duke that Sendek could not escape.
With Arizona State reportedly set to announce Sendek's hiring as the Sun Devils' new coach, N.C. State officials and several supporters said Sunday that they would not discount the drumbeat of criticism as a factor in his decision to leave Raleigh.
"I think it does wear on you," said Bobby Purcell, executive director of the Wolfpack Club. "It's not something he dwelled on, but the constant wear and tear of the negativism does take its toll."
Arizona State has not publicly confirmed the hiring yet, and Sendek has not responded to numerous requests for comment. Yet parents of current players, incoming recruits and other N.C. State officials confirmed Sunday that Sendek has accepted the Arizona State job.
Sendek met with the Wolfpack basketball team Sunday morning at State's basketball complex to inform them of his decision.
"It was very emotional," said Mark Brackman, father of N.C. State sophomore forward Andrew Brackman. "He just basically said he has to do what's right for his family."
The basketball complex carries the name of major Wolfpack donors Curtis Dail and his wife, Jacqueline Dail. Watching the Wolfpack baseball team complete a weekend sweep of Virginia on Sunday, Curtis Dail said he had spoken with Sendek several times since the end of the season, which ended with a second-round loss to Texas in the NCAA Tournament.
Dail said he would not discount the impact that fan complaints had on the coach's departure.
Think of the fan base as a coach's boss, Dail said.
"If I was working for someone who didn't want me, I'd leave too," Dail said of other fans' complaints. "But I think all of that stuff that's been in the papers and everything would make it hard to get a good coach. I mean, why would a coach want to come in and jump into this mess?"
Sendek compiled a 191-132 record at State and guided the team to the NCAA Tournament five consecutive seasons. But a four-game losing streak at the end of the season and the 21-point loss to Texas brought back fan complaints and media criticism.
"I think the Internet and the talk radio shows, plus the negative publicity in the newspapers had something to do" with Sendek's departure, said Jim Overcash, a 1958 NCSU graduate and longtime Wolfpack Club member.
Not all the complaints came from the grass-roots level, however. Not including student or "junior" youth members, the Wolfpack Club has roughly 15,000 members.
Mac Campbell Jr., president of the Wolfpack Club's board of directors, said Sendek was a good man and that his 10 years produced some good teams and good memories.
"But I think he did the right thing for him and his family," Campbell said Sunday. "The consensus among Wolfpack fans was that maybe we had gone as far as we could go under his leadership. We did not feel we were moving where we needed to go."
Sendek's predecessor at State, former coach Les Robinson, said there are certain parallels to 1996, the year he stepped down from the head coach's job. It was the best way to unite the fan base, said Robinson, who later served as State's athletics director.
"The situations aren't completely alike," Robinson said, "but the reasoning is much the same in terms of the fan base. When your people aren't happy, it wears on you."
Tommy Burleson, the Wolfpack center on State's 1974 national championship team, added his own log to the fire last month before the NCAA Tournament when he told Triangle SportsTalk radio that it was time for a change. After the news of Sendek's reported departure, a "Thank You Tommy" thread began unspooling, page after page on the Pack Pride message board.
"I did realize that. That's the media today," Burleson said about his decision to take his criticism public on the radio. "I had talked to other [former] State players about this. They didn't want to speak out, but they knew I would speak my mind. I knew what I was saying.
"Herb is a good man. We didn't agree on the style of basketball. I hope he didn't take it personally."
N.C. State baseball coach Elliott Avent was less eager to look for a silver lining. Avent and Sendek became head coaches at State the same year and had adjoining offices for seven years.
"A few minutes of hugs, a few minutes of tears," Avent said of his brief meeting with Sendek on Sunday morning.
Asked how much fans' complaints bothered his friend, Avent first praised Sendek's ability to tune much of that out.
"Did it wear on Herb? I can't answer that question," Avent said. "Would it wear on any human being? Without question, and that's a shame, because I can tell you that N.C. State just lost a great man. But I can tell you the Arizona State basketball team just got a lot better. The program just took a big jump up."" |

Nope. Nobody will remember their "final four run". Championships matter." |
so i guess most of UNC's years under Smith are meaningless then right? If you took a handfull of games and turned them into wins, there wouldn't have been half as much talk about herb as there was. Winning matters just as much as championships. You can't realistically expect to win a championship every year, or even every 5 years.4/3/2006 2:42:54 PM |

after having thought about this, this is a win-win situation.
alas, perhaps the sentiment of "fire herb" may have been correct, but i'm glad he ultimately left on his own terms, and with a significant pay raise.
but the sentiment of "herb sucks" is downright wrong, and people who say such things should have their head checked.
Herb is finding his niche of being the "rebuilding" coach. he was just never a "championship" coach. he can play his role well, and will bring Az State up to respectability. the legacy of Wolfpack Basketball beckons a championship coach.
here's a big sincere "thank you" to a guy that rebuilt us from the shambles he inherited, and here's a "farewell and good luck" to him for the rebuilding job he has ahead of him. 4/3/2006 2:43:20 PM |

blah blah blah blah. Didn't your boy Roy get in the position that he is in today because UNC fans ran Doherty off? Moral of the story. No matter what it is all NCSU fans fault. Lose the 6th straight game to our biggest rival? Crappy fans fault. Lose twice in a row to the worst team in the conference? Crappy fans fault.
It's a shame to see Herb go... it's the fans fault. The new guy coming in will suck... that will be the fans fault. Gas is up $0.20/g... fans fault.
The only thing that really is the fans fault is their complacency with mediocrity. <sarcasm>I mean isn't the best possible goal for our program from here to infinity to be third place in the ACC? Hey! It's the ACC we are talking about here, the golden conference. We should be content with third!!1!! </sarcasm>
All the legions of fans that have developed this attitude are crappy fans, not the fans that want a new coach.

True, but at the same time consistently getting to the final four will eventually land you a championship.
Herb was the best man for the job given the current conditions. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever coming in is just a transition coach to bide us more time until a better prospect becomes available. Maybe Herb realized this and it was a factor in his decision. Who knows.
