Seriously.
You guys are smoking crack if you think Pujols is better offensively than Bonds.
Bonds will get maybe one good pitch in a count and when he does he smokes it.
If pitchers walked/pitched garbage to Pujols like they do to Bonds then there wouldn't be such an argument. 4/5/2006 11:55:49 PM |

"Team player" and prickness don't factor into offensive production.
Barry Bonds is not amused with these lame attempts to trump him.

Barry Bonds' attitude has not cost the team anything and you can tell that because they compete year in and year out for championships, so his offensive production is really important to the team.
I mean who gives a damn what your offensive production is like if your team loses over half of its games.

Let me rephrase that.
ARod had 402 HRs by age 30. Pujols will turn 30 before the 2010 season. So he has to average a shad over 50 HRs a year for the next 4 years to match ARod. I don't see that happening.
Pujols is the 2nd best baseball player of my generation. ARod is the best.. imo.

We are arguing baseball with a Cubs fan. They do not know a winning team or a good player.
But seriously Bonds career batting average is .300 right now.
What was it before 2000 when his production went up somehow amazingly?
In 1999, Bonds hit an amazing .262
Pujols has never hit lower than .314
Nice comparison with the average issue. 4/6/2006 10:46:28 AM |

Pujols better than Bonds? I'd say its pretty close right now (obviously Pujols has health as his major advantage)
I cant believe soemone brought up stolen bases.
Bonds has stolen as many bases in a season as Pujols has in his career practically.
That was a really dumb route to take if you were attempting to discredit Bonds.
And just to set the record straight, Pujols has failed just as many drug tests as Bonds has.

The bulk of Bonds' career took place befor the dramatic increase in offense in MLB. Only in the diluted and beefed up current era of baseball are .300 seasons considered just good.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Bonds#Achievements http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Bonds#Resurgence
Quote : | "In 1999, with only statistics through 1997 being considered, Bonds ranked Number 34 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, making him the highest-ranking active player (next-best was Greg Maddux at Number 39), while Ken Griffey Jr. came in at Number 93. When the Sporting News list was redone in 2005, Bonds jumped up 28 spaces to Number 6 All Time, behind only Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Hank Aaron. However, while Bonds was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team that year, Griffey was actually elected to it, probably due to being more popular and respected than Bonds, rather than more impressive on the field. That same year, baseball historian and sabermetrician Bill James wrote of Bonds, "Certainly the most un-appreciated superstar of my lifetime... Griffey has always been more popular, but Bonds has been a far, far greater player." As of 1999, James rated Bonds as the 16th best player of all time, even though his career was far from complete. "When people begin to take in all of his accomplishments," James predicted, "Bonds may well be rated among the five greatest players in the history of the game."
Throughout the decade of the 1990s, Bonds was an exceptionally patient hitter and a great slugger who stole bases and played Gold Glove defense. Bill James ranked Bonds as the best player of the 1990s, noting that his selection for the 1990s' 2nd-best player (Craig Biggio) had been closer in production to the decade's 10th-best player than he was to Bonds." |
Quote : | "In 1999, Bonds hit an amazing .262" |
You do know that in 1999 Bonds missed 40% of the season with an elbow injury that required surgery. Look at his career and clearly that season is an outlier.
Quote : | "Nice comparison with the average issue." |
As good as Pujols is, he was outperformed by a 40 year old. Pujols can't touch what Bonds accomplished with stolen bases and fielding. Bonds is the perfect player, much like his godfather. Heck, Todd Helton has just as in impressive of a career start as Pujols. Vlad ain't too shabby either. This era of baseball simply has inflated production so don't compare numbers straight up, a lot has changed in nearly 2 decades.
Quote : | "It was a what have you done for me lately deal....I know bonds was a great all around player back in the day, but since the roids he's become more of a hitter only." |
Yes, strictly the 'roids... no chance that just maybe being old enough to be your father might have its own level of effect on his speed and agility in the field and on the basepaths. And for the record, Pujols is the same size Barry Bonds was the year he broke the record, but of course no chance he used performance enhancing substances to achieve his stature... nope.
I'd also like to take this moment to echo a sentiment expressed by rally:

Pujols would hit .400 with 70 homeruns if he played at Coors.
And in 1999, I know Bonds played over a hundred games seeing as how 2005 was the first year he was really hurt. And before 2001 Bonds batted over .312 only once. He also has 9 years total under .300
I dunno. All I know is they are both good as shit, but once somebody can prove Bonds was on roids, none of this matters.4/8/2006 12:36:40 AM |

The effects are overly dramaticized. Heck, places like Wrigley can have an even greater impact than what you get with elevation, plus Coors is a tad longer than most parks (like Busch). And for being such an advantage you would think the Rockies would have more than 2 players hit over .300 or at least 2 players hit 20 home runs.
Quote : | "And in 1999, I know Bonds played over a hundred games seeing as how 2005 was the first year he was really hurt. And before 2001 Bonds batted over .312 only once. He also has 9 years total under .300" |
Yeah he missed 60 games (about 40%) at the start of the season from tearing a ligament in his elbow that required surgery. So he got off to a really slow start and had to work back into it while everyone else is in prime form. If he was injured at the end of the season it would be a different story because the first portion of the season would not be affected. 1999 was clearly an outlier season.
Yeah, Bonds was consistent with his batting average and usually stayed between .295 and .310. That was great for that era and Bonds was a different kind of player. He was stealing about 40 bases and walking, 120 times a year, and winning perennial gold gloves (levels that Pujols isn't even close in). Take a look at Bonds' on-base percentage and OPS to see his producation level (the number to the right is MLB rank): On-base % OPS 1988-.368-7 1988-.859-6 1990-.406-4 1990-.970-1 1991-.410-1 1991-.924-1 1992-.456-1 1992-1.080-1 1993-.458-1 1993-1.136-1 1994-.426-5 1994-1.073-3 1995-.431-1 1995-1.009-1 1996-.461-2 1996-1.076-2 1997-.446-2 1997-1.031-3 1998-.438-4 1998-1.047-3 2000-.440-2 2000-1.127-2 2001-.515-1 2001-1.379-1 2002-.582-1 2002-1.381-1 2003-.529-1 2003-1.278-1 2004-.609-1 2004-1.422-1 When Pujols wins a few Gold Gloves and cracks the 40-40 club there might be an arguement.4/8/2006 1:33:42 AM |

msb2ncsu Why have you spent such an inordinate amount of time defending this piece of shit?
I already admitted he's got better numbers. It seems as though you are on his jock, and if so, fine, why not just admit it?
And if you want to do some god damn "Albert Pujols is the same size as bonds but there's no chance he did roids" comparison bullshit, how about you consider the fact that Pujols isnt the biggest waste of flesh to ever walk to planet when he's not on the baseball field.... taking away from most of the speculation. Fuck, even McGwire was an asshole to the fans and media....and I know he did roids. Forget the fact that Pujols NEVER looked like a skinny crack whore that bonds was his first few years.
All I can say is Bonds is a great baseball player but he's a piece of shit and I hope he jumps off the fucking empire state building like he suggested. I dont give a fuck how old he is, you know he did roids, so quit bringing up the age shit too. 4/8/2006 7:20:05 AM |

Quote : | "Apr 18 Pujols, who homered in his final three trips to the plate Sunday, made it four straight at-bats with a home run in a 2-1 St. Louis win over Pittsburgh on Monday. The Cardinals' first baseman hit a two-run shot in the first inning to account for both St. Louis runs. He also drilled a two-run shot in his final at-bat Sunday, erasing a 7-6 deficit and giving the Cards an 8-7 win over Cincinnati.
Advice: Pujols has homered in three straight games, pounding five longballs and driving in nine runs. " |
