I found out that Jake might have a bladder infection or something, and that would explain why he has random accidents in his crate. I'll be taking him in to the vet this week to find out for sure. At the adoption even today the vet stopped by and after I told him about his problems, he felt Jake's bladder, and Jake freaked out once he pressed on it, so there's a good possibility. Plus, he's supposed to be able to hold it for 12 hrs at his age.

poor doggie is he going to get over the infection himself or will it take divine intervention?

There will probably be some sort of medicine for it if the vet finds out that's what he has.

Yeah everyone with the organization has been surprised about Jake and about Tanner, another young dog on the website. Other older, adult dogs are flying out of their foster homes and the organization's kennels, while these mid-sized puppies are left behind. The very young puppies also get homes really fast.

Jake hasn't had an accident for a while now, so I don't know if that's because he's gotten over an infection or just finally strengthened his bladder muscles. I've heard getting them neutered helps with it, so maybe that had a role. Either way it's really great. He's also learned how to sit, although still needs practice. He's gone to the door a few times now to show us he needs to go out.

Someone please adopt Jake before I get more attached!! He's a wonderful cuddler - he wanted to play earlier but when I got in bed for a nap he was more than willing to lay and nap next to me. I know some people may not want a dog getting on the bed like that, and he won't get up there unless I feel like it, but it's really cool because my own puppy is pretty restless the occasional evening we allow her to sleep with us, and just keeps getting up and resettling.

what!?!? 12 hours?

How old is Jake now? 4ish months? Most dogs his age can "hold it" for 4-5 hours. They magical equation is age+1...so if he's 4 months, he can hold it for 4 or 5 hours. If pups catch on to potty training early, you could add a few more, but you can't expect it. At 4 months my pup could go 8 hours, but I never forced her to if I could help it. And you certainly can't expect any puppy to consistently "hold it" for 12 hours. No wonder he has a bladder infection...

Don't insinuate stuff without knowing how I care for the animals. Just because I relayed the info from the vet that he should be able to doesn't mean I leave him cooped up for 12 hrs. I'm a little pissy today so perhaps I shouldn't be responding, but still... The vet's comment about that wasn't a recommendation to leave a dog alone for that long, but rather about his surprise that Jake's had trouble with housetraining. The puppy I previously fostered had hardly any difficulty. This guy has been in the field for twenty years, with a few different animal hospitals around the country, so I'm sure he's familiar enough with the ability levels of pets. Doesn't mean he would recommend it though.

Jake's 5 months old. My own puppy could hold it for 6-8 hrs when she was only 6 weeks old if necessary. With puppies I follow the crate-training rules, to take the pup outside immediately upon coming home or when able to watch the puppy. Especially with rescue puppies I take them outside every couple hours in the beginning. The equation you mention is probably a recommendation for most efficient and healthy potty training, rather than what the puppy is able to accomplish at that age (which should be avoided unless absolutely can't be helped).

Anyway sorry about the long post but like I said I've had a bad day and don't feel like putting up with wrong assumptions. I'm not promoting leaving a pup cooped up for several hours on end.

Took Jake to Lake Johnson today and it was hilarious. He kept trying to attack the water. Then eventually he jumped fully in and learned how to swim. He loved it.

^^Yeah he's had one accident in the last week. He's learning obedience and he's not as independent as my own puppy, and will actually walk with me if he's not on a leash. He also loves cuddling with me, and being on my lap. So yeah I'm a little more attached although I try to keep fostered animals at a distance. It helps that my husband has no tolerance for any more animals, so I have no choice but to give them up

Jake knows to go into his crate when we say it's time to get into bed. He's such a good pup!

You have enough animals without getting a puppy even if you had the space

bttt for Jake. I can't believe I've had him for two months. I delayed taking him in to the vet because he hasn't had accidents in a while, but then he's had a couple yesterday and today, so if it's a bladder infection, maybe it just re-emerged or something. So hopefully I can take him in Saturday. But other than what seems to be uncontrollable (it's stuff like a trickle path as though he physically can't hold it, and outside occasionally he'll make an effort to pee but nothing comes out) he's housebroken. I'll definitely update once I get him to the vet.
