Quote : | "Asked Wednesday if he had been contacted by N.C. State, Ford said, "I don't feel like that's for me to say. That's for people at N.C. State to talk about."
"But I would be very flattered to be considered by N.C. State," Ford said. "and I would do everything in my power to make N.C. State the best program in the country."" |
Quote : | "Contacted Wednesday, Thompson was surprised to learn Ford's name had surfaced for the Wolfpack's head coaching job.
"Phil Ford? For the N.C. State job?" Thompson said. "Wow. That's hard to believe.
"Phil would do a good job, but with that State-Carolina thing, I don't know. As much as Phil loves Carolina, that'd be a hard situation to put himself in.
"But Phil does a good job. He's a good recruiter, good with young people. He knows basketball."
Thompson said he would not speculate on whether State fans would accept Ford as their coach but said it would not bother him to have Ford coaching the Pack.
"I know Phil. I can't say anything bad about Phil Ford," Thompson said." |

The tarheels would never go for Phil Ford coming to State. After Dean stepped down he was one of the main reason they kept getting strong recruiting classes. In fact they politiced hard to keep Ford on staff after Doh' stepped down and tried to corner Roy into putting him somewhere on the staff but Roy wasn't having it.
I don't want to see him here either though, I think this is nothing but a smoke screen to set fans up to anticipate the hiring of a coach not many people have heard of. 4/27/2006 9:06:25 AM |

To be realistic a move like getting a rival as a coach has been done before. Vic Bubbas was an Everett Case protege and State grad and eventually was hired at Duke's head coach and he began raising Duke into one of the better programs out there today.
Phil Ford wouldn't be that guy though for a move like this, if any one coach had to be hired from our rival schools it would be Johnny Dawkins. However, that is a pipe dream cause I am sure he is waiting for Coach K to step down so he can take over. Many schools have pursued him and he has turned them down. I still think Ford is nothing but a blown-up smoke screen. 4/27/2006 9:29:38 AM |

rick patino coached at kentucky before Louisville 4/27/2006 9:37:29 AM |

^ good point I didn't think about that, Pitino's situation was a little different though. After he left Kentucky his assistant takes over he goes on to the NBA and stinks it up. Once he came back to the NCAA he was the hottest coach out there on the market, so I am sure Louisville fans were more than willing to turn there back on the fact he coached at the rival school since he was national championship level coach.
Given the right situation, it we would not care if a certain coach was a UNC or Duke grad as long as he was right for the situation. Phil Ford doesn't fall into that category. 4/27/2006 9:42:08 AM |

I've heard everythihng about Vic Bubas and how Duke didn't mind having a State alum coaching them. I can't believe I would even consider having an UNC person come in, but I might be open to it - IF it was the right person. That being said ...
Quote : | "Ford had long been considered a potential UNC head coach. Those chances were tarnished in 1999, when he pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge. That followed an arrest and guilty plea to a similar charge in Michigan in 1997. He went on medical leave and spent a month in an alcohol treatment facility. He eventually returned as Guthridge's assistant." |
That's from the N&O story quoted a few posts earlier. And that is exactly why I'd help paint Fowler's house if we hired him. If we're going to hire one of the minions of the Antichrist, could we please at least not hire the one who needed to go to rehab?4/27/2006 10:14:25 AM |

actually go read their message board, they are happy about this, they claim they would give him a standing ovation when we come to the dean dome
as much as this does seem awkward and rub me the wrtong way, i would not mind this, you know the guy has a chip on his shoulder and feels he has something to prove. thats exactly what we need in a coach here at nc state. he has come out and said he is interested in the job. everyone makes mistakes, and many people you know and work with have gotten dwi's and most times when you get a dwi rehab classes are required. its not like he's some heroin junkie. i'm not saying getting a dwi is ok, i'm just saying its not as big of a deal as most of you are making it out to be. at this point i would say he would be an excellent hire. him or marshall and i would be happy.4/27/2006 11:14:11 AM |

if you really wanna branch out and ford isn't your guy, i'd say either dave hanners or pat sullivan would be interesting choices. they were both assistants under dean, and now they both work for larry brown
sullivan also played in 3 final fours and coached in 3, so that would be a good selling point to recruits

Quote : | "Former North Carolina assistant coach Phil Ford, who said he has been contacted by N.C. State as a possibililty for the Wolfpack's head coaching position, is not a candidate for the job, a source in the N.C. State athletics department said Thursday.
Ford, an assistant with the NBA's New York Knicks, wouldn't specify who had contacted him about the job, except that it was not athletics director Lee Fowler.
N.C. State's job has been open since Herb Sendek resigned April 1. Since then, Texas' Rick Barnes, Memphis' John Calipari, former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and West Virginia's John Beilein have turned down offers by the Wolfpack." |

So far ford is the only person to really say tht he would like to coach our team, haith is rumored to have said its his dream job. I think after we have lring lost on the big guys fowler should bring all canidates into the same room and figure out who wants to win and can win the most. Phil Ford was NEVER a candidate. Just because someone speaks to another that is close to the search does not make them a candidate.
Alot of times during these searches, people are contacted about thier opinions or suggestions to the direction they need to go for the search or about a candidate. 4/27/2006 6:32:49 PM |
