Mario signed with the Texans months ago
Bush is still holding out for #1 pick money
Is it a little more clearer why the Texans picked Mario? The Texans, who are one of two teams, to have already signed ALL of their draft picks 7/25/2006 1:08:58 PM |

^i don't think this makes anything "more clearer" about the texans picking williams over bush. if bush would have gone 1 and williams 2...the texans might have signed bush just as quickly. you also pointed out the texans have signed all their draft picks, even more reason to think they would have signed bush in rapid fashion as well. 7/25/2006 1:22:14 PM |

Well Vince Young got Mario money (and the Titans are idiots for doing so), so you know that is only going to help Reggie's initiative to get Mario money as well. I'm sure NO is wanting him to sign in the neighborhood of 40M/6yrs., which would be a nice increase over what Ronnie Brown got last year, but with VY's crazy deal, they won't be able to use that reasoning anymore. Now NO has no choice but to cough up the money. They won't do it for a long time of course though. 7/28/2006 1:01:14 PM |

he may be the best NFL player ever, he may flop...he'll probably be somewhere in the middle
but running behind the best college O-Line the last few years against mostly weak defenses (see: Pac-10 defenses) with a solid QB, WR core and other RB (see HB who scored 3 TD's vs. Texas in NC game) doesnt translate to automatic success in the NFL 7/28/2006 1:15:35 PM |

QB's yes, RB's no...
The money order goes QB > WR, OT, DE > DT, CB, LB > RB, OG, C > K > P, FB
Look at what Shaun Alexander & Edge had to take. If either were a WR or DE, they'd have gotten 50% more.
If Shaun Alexander, the best RB in the game gets an 8Mil./yr. deal, why does Reggie deserve a 8Mil/yr. deal (which would be Mario type money).
Ronnie Brown, only got 5 Mil last year as the #2 pick.

the Saints have to and will sign this guy.
Bush deserves "#1 pick money" because of what he accomplished in college and also based on hype...the hype that he will bring to a struggling franchise and if he suceeds, the hype that he'll add to the NFL.

^^ gotdamn, are they discontinuing the Heisman or something? He isn't the first and won't be the last to win it. That shouldn't and doesn't vault him to the top of the paychart. Leinart has a Heisman too; does he also deserve more than Mario Williams? When Ricky Williams gets reinstated, does he deserve more money on his next contract? What about Ron Dayne, if he beats out Tatum Bell should he get more money than Williams? If Eric Crouch decides to come back and play WR does he get more money?

Alexander and Edge had to take that because they are old and not many teams want to lock up an old running back to that kind of money.
Reggie Bush = $$$$
Ronnie Brown isn't marketable, pay the guy his money and avoid all the bad publicity. If they are planning on using him in a lot of packages (and possibly special teams) then it might be a good idea to actually have him in training camp.
Everyone knows that players who miss training camp are like ten times more likely to get injured during the season so its just plain stupid to have this guy miss camp.
The titans were smart, they didnt fuck around with Vince Young.
After PacMan Jones sucked it up nicely last year after holding out the titans learned their lesson.
The Saints have absolutely no leverage here, their fans are gonna be furious if Bush isnt on the field. This isnt like Philip Rivers or something where the team didn't actually need him to be ready right away.
Sign the guy, he's not gonna settle for less than what Vince Young got i can assure you so either sign him or just disband your franchise. 7/28/2006 3:11:52 PM |

The thing about the Titans deal is, less guaranteed money than Mario, but more incentive options. Now Vince was a beast in college, can't deny that, BUT I've had my reservations about him succeeding in the NFL since his Jr season. By the end Mario will have made more money than Vince. Vince likely won't be the starter until at least week 6 or 7 so I doubt he'll be able to get any incentives this season.
If I were the Saints I'd do something similar with Bush. I'd pay him less than Mario guaranteed, but then I'd make up for it with incentives, much like Vince Young. There is so much speculation on Bush that it could turn out to work well for them. If he gets the incentives then likely they'll be doing well and it'll pay off, if he's not doing well then they aren't obligated to pay him all of that money. 7/28/2006 4:05:20 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
most of VY's incentives are like roster bonuses.... he's only gotta play 45% of the snaps ANY season (or 35% this season) to get one of the $4 million bonuses.
Vince will meet all of those incentives unless he gets injured or something. I think VY will be a pimp. He's not as quick as Vick but he's a lot more durable and he's practically just as elusive. His release is funny but he isn't gonna have to be a gunslinger to win ballgames. 7/28/2006 4:19:02 PM |

^^ I've heard that Bush wants more total and guaranteed money.
So if Mario is at 6 yrs/$54 million, $26.5 million guaranteed, his asking price is prob. something along the lines of 5 yrs/$48 million, $25 million guaranteed 7/28/2006 4:59:57 PM |

If Vernon Davis just became the highest paid TE in the league (ahead of Shockey, Crumpler, Gonzalez, etc) then what would be wrong with Reggie Bush becoming the #1 paid RB in the league?
This is how the NFL works. Philip Rivers has been making millions for holding a clipboard, shoudln't one of the most explosive athletes in the world make a couple dollars here and there too?
If the Saints didnt want to pay this guy they should have drafted someone else or traded the pick. His demands to be paid like the #1 pick are not unreasonable.
This happens all the time in baseball where a guy who would go #1 slides a few spots because a low budget team doesn't wanna break the bank on a prospect. Think JD Drew...

Vernon Davis will.... START!! at tight end.
Reginald won't be the Saints' starter at RB. If the Saints were riding Antowain Smith and Aaron Stecker, then it'd be different, but we already have a classy well-paid RB on the team, with ACTUAL connections to the Gulf Coast... who can line up wide, star on special teams, make guys miss, and run over guys. He does all the exact same things people are saying Reginald will do. I still disagree with the pick, but hell, he's here and I WANT him to succeed... but I also want him to earn his stripes too. Deuce was making six figures while breaking franchise records. He showed and proved for a long time and got rewarded for it. 7/28/2006 6:26:19 PM |

Reggie Bush will probably be starting by week 5 when Deuce McAllister is on the IR.
And its not Reggie Bush's fault the Saints picked him even though they had another RB.
Vince Young isn't going to start right off the bat either, should he get paid less?
The Saints are being dumb here.
They have a legit superstar and they are risking their season and potentially his career (if he gets hurt during the season due to missing camp).
Pay that man his money.
Didn't anyone learn a lesson from the Eagles last year? They went from NFC Champs to Chumps all because they jewed out. Now they are going to be NFC East cellar dwellers for back to back seasons. 7/28/2006 6:31:33 PM |

^^ so one season-ending injury means it will happen every season for the rest of his career? Somewhere, a sports medicine specialist is pissed.
Vince Young was originally brought in to be the heir apparent to Steve McNair -- yes he will get paid; then again, he is a quarterback and quite possibly the face of their franchise for the next 10 years. The Saints already have a face of the franchise... entering his prime... at the same position as Reginald. Yes, I firmly believe the Saints dropped the ball on this pick, and as the resident Saints fan here, I'm pissed off by it. We didn't fill a need - didn't need a backup RB (just signed Benett), didn't need a slot specialist (we have no fewer than three of those), didn't need a return specialist (we already have at least two capable guys, and if it were seriously a need we could've gotten one later, ie Skyler Green), didn't need a face of the franchise (his name is Deuce McAllister, the other one is Joe Horn), didn't need him to drive ticket sales (many sales packages had season tickets as low as $14/game). DID. NOT. NEED. HIM. I agree with you, he has to get paid and deserves a well-earning paycheck, but he also has to realize that hardballing already cost him draft position ($$$!) and is now costing him valuable practice time.
You've bought into the ESPN hype of both Michael-Mike and Reginald. I'm suddenly unimpressed by you.
