this guy is a lowlife...
i am curious about a couple of things:
- how did he end up in New Orleans? was he born there or did he move there? - does he have family outside of New Orleans? - i wonder how far back he can trace his roots? - how many of the Katrina victims have their entire traceable bloodline to N.O./Louisiana area?
i know if i had to evacuate the Raleighwood area for some reason, i would have family to go to in various parts of the country. and if all hell broke lose, i have family on 6 of the 7 continents. we're a very spread out yet tight knit type of people.
i've always wondered how many people affected by this had no family to turn to outside of the area. 6/6/2006 5:13:24 PM |

^The "requiring something in return" in this case is "get a job and move on with your life" as 296 people in your scenario seemed to do just fine. For the people that seem content to just mooch - start giving the hotel they are staying at the $9K to hire the guy to clean rooms - make them work for it.
I don't see how giving someone money for months on end helps anyone when they have proved that they aren't going to use money that is earmarked to help people rebuild their lives to actually, you know, rebuild their lives.

Its about being a responsible human being. Granted this guy's situation sucks being a poor guy in New Orleans and being displaced for several months. But the government gave him a place to live and a stipend. Its not a lot, but its livable. Instead he chose to live irresponsibly and he should not be "rewarded" for being irresponible by getting more handouts. Enough is enough.
What about all these immigrants who come from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Latin America with absolutely nothing? These people find means to attain a livable wage- with very little assistance.

you dumb, uneducated smut
the severity of Katrina wasn't the problem, the fact that the levees broke was the problem
evacuations were made voluntary on Saturday night (which is when I left, because I took US 90 out of there and didn't want to deal with the inevitable spike in traffic). They were made mandatory sometime Sunday, with the storm hitting not very long thereafter. It wasn't until Tuesday that the levees broke and shit REALLY hit the fan.6/11/2006 2:22:57 AM |

I agree and disagree with this. You have a massive fucking storm coming your way in a city below sea level. Bad things are going to happen. Katrina was a Cat 5 at one point before slamming Louisiana/Mississippi. Common sense tells you to get the hell out of Dodge. People here in Florida evacuated before Katrina hit (and the countless storms that hit the Gulf in 2004), even as Cat 1-2 storms. However- the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans were asleep at the wheel. Poor evacuation planning and lack of preparation. You would think that Louisiana, being a hurricane-prone state (like Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, etc). would have a better plan. Especially when you have a major city that is sinking.
Katrina debaucle was as bad as it gets. The Federal government screwed up badly. But it seems to me that the public has completely exonerated the state government and the City of New Orleans- when in fact, they contributed just as much to the problem. Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagin can instead be seen grandstanding on TV, working on re-elections. If anything, the Katrina mess should have exposed to the country how incompetent and backwards-ass the governments there really are.

^^ The city's been hit pretty badly by storms before - ask any New Orlenian of the 40s, 50s, or 60s about Betsy and Camille. I'll agree, more people should have been pro-active and not reactive, but we've had so many RECENT scares (Andrew, Georges, Hugo, Dennis, others) that either went elsewhere or died in the Gulf that very few thought that this would be IT. I can toss you stories of family and friends who either stayed during the storm or have since returned from it, just to give a bit of firsthand insight on the varying degrees of opinion regarding it all.
I don't intend to turn this into pandering and chest-beating, it's just simply my willingness to bring more to the table than CNN or any other media outlet can share. 6/11/2006 4:26:42 AM |

This guy is the fucking man. Actually, he seems depressed and disaffected, with the two combining to yield a man who just doesn't give a fuck.
I think most of the people vilifying this man all have homes, families, and friends, things that they care about. It's not clear that Theon Johnson has any of those things. If you had nothing important in your life, nothing to live for, and you felt that you would never have anything, what would you be motivated by? Would you give two shits if somebody thought you were a bum, which you would probably agree to be true about yourself? How important would society (and your role in it) be to you? Can you even begin to imagine that despair?
FEMA GAVE the money to him, and he spent it as he pleased, and he'll soon face the consequences for his "choice": a rumbling tummy, homelessness, poor health, etc...don't act like this man is getting a free pass through all of life's difficulties or getting off scot free. He legally took advantage of the government and society; corporations do it all the time and at much higher gains.
Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at is this: while many of us would appreciate the chance to relax and do only what we felt like doing for a few months, none of us would ever actually want to be Theon Johnson. Think about it. 6/12/2006 5:35:45 AM |

Q: If you had nothing important in your life, nothing to live for, and you felt that you would never have anything, what would you be motivated by?
A: a rumbling tummy, homelessness, poor health, etc.
It's sad that this guy was given the opportunity but decided to not take advantage of it. What about everyone else that found themselves in Theon Johnson's position but managed to pull themselves out of the rut? You act like it can't be done. Granted it isn't easy, but it sure would be worth it.
Quote : | "Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at is this: while many of us would appreciate the chance to relax and do only what we felt like doing for a few months, none of us would ever actually want to be Theon Johnson." |
Very true, but then again this is why so many of us make an attempt to work to support ourselves. We don't want to be Theon Johnson. I think many people that see a problem with this aren't uptight because they wish they could be the one living it up on a free 9 month ride. I think they are uptight because they feel like they have involuntarily paid the way for someone else to be able to do it.
