Well, I don't know anything about socializing, just personally, but I do know how to maximize my drinking experience. And I guarantee that I've made at least as much back in free drinks as I've offered in tips.6/13/2006 3:02:11 AM |

you guys that bitch about tipping bartenders....make sure you read the section on how bartenders will scam you. This is how the industry is. This is what is going on behind the bar at your favorite sports bar or your downtown nightclub and you have no clue it's even going on.

As far as the shorting on the liquor that probably only happens in tourist traps. Any bar I spend a great deal of time in I would certainly wonder why the fuck I am completely sober after 3-4 drinks. 6/17/2006 2:07:57 PM |

Quote : | "The tricks are even smoother when you move over to the bar, because things happen faster there, according to Pickhardt and Collins.
"See, the bartender, he's the ground zero of scam," Collins said. "He may give you three quarters of a shot, instead of a shot and a quarter. You don't know the difference, because you didn't watch him"
"Or he might come back with a bottle of his own and fill up the top shelves with some cheap stuff that he picked up at the store," said Pickhardt "You make the strawberry daiquiri but you don't put any alcohol in it. You just pour a little bit of the strong stuff down the straw. They take that first whopping sip and whoa! This is a strong daiquiri. Psychologically, again, they think they got a great deal and a strong drink when in fact they got a fraction of a shot, freeing up the rest of that shot to be scammed by the bartender," said Collins." |
See that's the whole point you guys don't get, you might not see it happening or it might not happen to you.... but ask any bartender that posts on this board. If you have ever been visibly drunk at the bar, then you have had a big target on your chest. This is how working in a bar goes down.6/17/2006 2:37:42 PM |

^wow. i'm a bartender. and i've never seen either of those things happen. i'm not saying it doesn't happen, but maybe you should choose the places you drink at a little more carefully. really though, i know a lot of bartenders and i doubt any of them have done anything that shady. Of course, there are the bastards that treat us like we are beneath them... and you can't blame someone for wanting to retaliate.
And stiffing your bartender is a slap in the face, just like it would be to a waiter, we aren't paid that much /hour. It varies place to place, but mostly only a little more than a server.

That article had some extremes. Straining the cigarette butts out of Hollandaise? I don't know. The part about replacing top shelf with Aristocrap was interesting though. But seriously, if you are concerned about getting a fair shake with drinks, get a bottled beer. Learned that with Rum Runners. I'd see the bartender pouring some kind of alcohol, but it must have been alcohol flavored water. After 3 rum and coke's in about a half hour, I ordered a damn Bud Light and said, "Oh, I remember now, this is what a buzz is like." 6/19/2006 2:12:44 AM |

where do you bartend at Jello???
you are only 21....once you have been a bartender at multiple places you will see it eventually.
Almost any downtown bar b/c usually bartenders downtown have been bartending for quite a few years, they know how to make their $500 a night. 6/19/2006 1:54:31 PM |

I COULDN'T SEE IT HAPPENING AT ANY OF OUR PLACES.....THE OWNERS RUN A PRETTY TIGHT SHIP.....IF THE BARTENDERS WERE STEALING THAT MUCH MONEY FROM THE RESTURANT THEN MANAGEMENT WOULD SURELY FIND OUT AND HAVE IN PREVIOUS CASES.... 6/19/2006 4:31:19 PM |

Where the fuck have you worked??
I've worked at several bars and restaurants and haven't seen any of this shit. I think I've seen one cocktail waitress that had a drunk guy leave like 10 bucks for the tip but the total would have made it like 15. I told her to put what the total was. That's about it.6/19/2006 5:28:46 PM |

It was only a $15 dollar drink tab.
You might have tipped more than the average drinker...but a bartender wouldn't take a second look at that receipt. 6/19/2006 7:56:12 PM |

I was refering to the way alcohol is poured behind the bar, not scamming credit cards (that is def something very dumb to do). Jello said she had never seen any of this stuff in her bartending career:
Quote : | ""The tricks are even smoother when you move over to the bar, because things happen faster there, according to Pickhardt and Collins.
Psychologically, again, they think they got a great deal and a strong drink when in fact they got a fraction of a shot, freeing up the rest of that shot to be scammed by the bartender," said Collins."" |
Like I said earlier
the better you tip me......
A. the stronger your drinks will be
B. I will serve you first when I have a bar full of people"
and in order to take care of part A you are going to end up scamming alcohol away from shitty tippers and drinks coming in on tickets from servers on the floor.
Which brings me to my next point...If you are going to get drinks, get them directly from the bartender. I always watch the bartender pour my drinks when I am out and 9 times out of ten I watch bartenders underpour the drinks going out to the floor.6/20/2006 3:54:12 AM |
