"C) Destroy the rigid format structure and promote a mix of the three formats. Basically this would compeletly unglue the weekday constraints of Daytime=rock with a few other things, Evenings=Afterhours, Nights=Underground. DJs would be encouraged to play a pure mix of rock, hiphop, and electronic together, constantly providing something for everyone each hour.

"i'm all for C with probably even more genres represented (like maybe even some funk, soul, classical, jazz, bluegrasss, blues and older country...nothing drastic as there are stations that play this music 24/7, but something sprinkled in) during the daytime...
"

Yup, I usually can't stand any of the formats for more than 20 minutes. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy ALOT of types of music, including what you play now. But with afterhours its hour after hour of "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM" and the daytime rock is hour after hour of guitar "CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP" and it's just more than I can stand. Even the themed shows should stay short. The acapella show is pretty impressive, but should last about an hour or so. Same with the Indian music(though sunday mornings don't really matter, so let it run long). Even better would be to mix some of the good Indian stuff right in with regular rotation on weekdays. Ditto for bluegrass, ambient, old school rap, whatever. Just switch it up some.

Of course, for this to work, the DJ's actually have to know something about more than one genre. (which they probably do anyway)

Actually I'm faily certain that Electronic-formatted stations do exist, and no not just in Europe. They're rare in the states, but I believe that part of the problem contributing to their rarity has something to do with the current trends in FM broadcast radio and the FCC. It is really hard to start a new station, usually taking years to just get the paperwork to go through, and even making a format change takes a while. Electronic music, being so new to the music scene, hasn't really had a chance to land stations across the country yet. The places they do exist are huge population centers that would normally see the first of a new innovation (LA, Chicago, Miami, NYC, ect). Plus, with XM and Sirius to compete with (both offer 3+ electronic music channels) and the internet/ipods, FM commercial radio as a whole isn't seeing a whole lot of expansion. Some in the industry are actually worried that we are at the eve of the downfall of commercial radio, because of other, better alternatives.

On format change, WKNC as a non-profit college radio station doesn't have to push a lot of the paperwork that commercial radio stations do. We could have then, in theory, changed format with little to no difficulty. One of the perks of being that low on the dial.

I know she went on to 96 because I would sometimes switch stations to listen to her show on there, but now she seems to have dissapeared from radioland

do I have to be a student (I am a former...) to work there? Or can I come and get out my aggression for HAVING to play Kelly Clarkson all the time by playing some music that I would actually want to hear?

If I wanted to listen to a band like that, I'd just play Interpol.

I don't think Joy Division and Interpol are in the same category at all. But I'd totally go Joy Division > Interpol >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SWR

i heard they played tapes 'n tapes today. that band is the shit and gives knc a little more rep.

^i don't know, but that guy was cool when i worked with him at technician. he would be a welcome addition. (i know he was the programming director or something at knc 5 years ago or so).

[Edited on June 26, 2006 at 3:32 PM. Reason : o;aiwjef]

just read his bio on the wknc.org and it says he hosts the saturday morning sports show. . . that doesn't really sound like ghassan's game. . . but who knows.

must be someone using the same dj name as he did...guess it's been way long enough that newer dj's never would have known him
