melvin's ??
you're serious
it sucks balls. cook-out does not suck balls. the spicy chicken tray (fries, corndog, huge tea) is unbeatable. and ranking in at $4.31 tax included, by far the most affordable price-to-weight deal in all of raleigh. the greatest deal a college student can get.
also, staying open until 4am on weekends does not hurt either. cook-out would kill on hillsborough if used correctly.
that melvin's shit isn't even real

they basically need to just get cars the out of hillsborough street. the traffic is constant and at times you really have to wait to cross the street. granted, franklin street also has traffic and is difficult to cross but both sides of the street have shops throughout. hillsborough is definitely not pedestrian-oriented and without pedestrians there is not a lot of promise when it comes to opening up shops/cafes.
the main problem is that there is nowhere to feed traffic. the streets behind hillsborough are definitely not capable of handling the flow and NCSU's side is already clusterfucked 75% of the time. I am looking forward to seeing how they handle this. 6/23/2006 12:18:20 PM |

Not necessarily. When I was a freshman/sophomore living on campus I rarely went off campus for lunch due to my meal plan. I usually just went to Talley or the Atrium. The same went for just about all of my friends. I think primarily juniors, seniors, and grad students go to Hillsborough St. for lunch.6/24/2006 10:37:51 AM |

i didn't see any pedestrian bridges......definitely crosswalks involved. there were roundabouts and discussion of dropping the speed limit to 25. they wish to have the wolfline back completely on Hillsborough pulling to the side of the street at designated spots. basically eliminating the road in front of the library and having the stops directly on Hillsborough. i think thats a really bad idea and i explained that to the guy from Kimley and Horn. hopefully things will turn out. they are praying to get money for this really soon. 6/25/2006 10:43:02 PM |

So their solution to no parking near or on hillsborough is to turn the street into a parking lot....great 6/26/2006 5:10:47 AM |
Wolfpacker06 Suspended 5482 Posts user info edit post |
The idea with making h-borough street more pedestrian friendly is to move traffic off onto western or wade. Western and Wade are designed to handle the traffic going downtown, not Hillsborough street. With the improvements, only people who live on Hillsborough street or are going there as their final destination will use it, which is what they want.
And parking isn't a problem when you consider all the parking on campus after 5pm, including four lots off the top of my head on the other side of Hillsborough that open up after 5pm.
The problem is that no one knows they can park there. They need those big blue "Public Parking" signs to tell people where to park, just like downtown. 6/26/2006 10:43:08 AM |

Schuchula Veteran 138 Posts user info edit post |
There would be no net change in the amount paid. They would be able to scale back the campus dining. Students would also have to pay out of the pocket, or with board bucks, whenever they exceed the alotted meal money (as they do already with the Talley and Brickyard food courts). 6/26/2006 8:28:13 PM |

Yeah, they need to be a little better with letting people know where they can and can't park on campus after 5pm. One time I got a ticket at like 8:00pm for parking on campus and I was curious as to why. I parked in that little lot that is at the top of the TompkinsCaldwellWinston building. I didn't see the behind-the-bush you can't park here sign. I literally had to search it out. I lost a lot of trust with parking on campus that day.6/27/2006 8:07:10 AM |

yes, because, believe it or not, there is usually a good reason for the "no parking" or "by permit only" parking spots. usually on campus they are for maintenance vehicles. 6/27/2006 8:38:16 AM |

For a street like Hillsborough that has a lot of traffic, the plan is to have fewer lanes and slower traffic.
For a downtown with light car traffic compared to other cities and that has parking decks with many empty parking spaces and used to have a lot of pedestrian traffic during lunch time on Fayetteville street mall before they ass raped the sidewalk, the plan is to pave the pedestrian mall to add more parking.

Kimley Horn did a lot of the concept planning for the downtown Wake Forest revitilization. I get investors calling me from california, NY, and all over trying to buy property within walking distance to the shops before the improvements are made.
Had an investor sell a condo in California for enought money to buy four units, the units generate roughly $3800 a month in revenue, she has owned them less than a year and they most likely would appraise for 8-10k more than she paid (per unit).
Along hillsborough st the residential property values are already inflated, its the vacant commercial space that is the problem. It looks like the changes they are doing should make the area more welcoming and pedestrian friendly. 6/28/2006 12:23:27 AM |

i don't see how residential property values are inflated on hillsborough st. where did you come up with that?
the properties are in very high demand ...near downtown/very close to university plus I don't know if you are aware of this but the downtown residential scene is blowing up with growth and interest
