i'd hardly call nascar a "niche" sport
its the most popular spectator sport in the country

^^ I was talking about elsewhere in the world. It's just a niche sport...that's looked at as a cartoon pretty much. Canada and Mexico have some interest, but it's still behind Formula One in those countries.

In regards to the auto racing comment...
If you think that is the case, you should visit Australia or New Zealand sometime in (our) winter. They have produced some great open wheel short track (sprint car, midget car) talents over the years.
In fact, Jeff Gordon, Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell and all the rest of our top open wheel drivers would run down there every winter to stay sharp. NASCAR, F1, and IRL are not the only forms of motorsports on the planet.

the reason we lost the world baseball classic was because Japan and other countries had already been playing. If we played that thing now, America would beat the piss out of everyone. 6/23/2006 12:01:09 PM |

I know, I'm designing an LMP2.
Austrazealand have racing similar to the USAC racing in the midwest. They don't have anything larger than a half-mile though. The racing that is commercially supported in the country is F1 (thanks to Mark Webber) and Australian V8 Supercar Racing (similar to our NASCAR, except GM is called Holden down there), but that is ran exclusively on road courses.6/23/2006 12:27:12 PM |

^ I'm just saying we're cursed and cannot win international competitions (those with national teams, not a bunch of individuals like in the Olympics). We just need to figure out the reason why to market it. 6/23/2006 12:51:59 PM |
