^well, he still is just "a guy who can hold a football and run"
your point just proves that people want to watch that guy "hold it and run" while eating a corndog, wearing a jersey, and drinking a cold one 7/24/2006 9:40:18 AM |

Yes I would, provided that it doesn't involve stepping on the next man's toes. Say Mario got $27 million guaranteed as the first pick - wouldn't it come to follow that Reginald should get about $25-26 million? Unless he knows he won't last long and needs to get every cent possible on this first contract, he should just be humble, realize that his selfishness at the bargaining table has already cost him a bigger payday, and take the offer the Saints are giving him. I'm sure the Saints aren't trying to give him something stupid like $15 million guaranteed.
Can undrafted guys come out and say, "I should have been drafted, give me a real salary" ?7/24/2006 10:38:32 AM |

No, because:
Quote : | "In May, shortly after Bush was drafted, the Saints had already set a franchise record for season-ticket sales, having topped 55,000 at that time. That's extraordinary, especially considering the condition of the hurricane-ravaged city." |
Mario Williams won't be doing that any time soon.7/24/2006 10:50:39 AM |

So he should get paid more for essentially being a media darling? Reginald would have had that kind of impact no matter where he went. So say he went 32nd - should he get more than every first round pick? If he slipped to the 2nd day, should he still be guaranteed $20 million? If you're going to use that argument, it would have to make sense no matter where he was drafted. His high demands have cost him once already. Why does he continue to do this to himself? If I were to go to every fast food joint in RTP and ask for $12 an hour, I wouldn't get hired by any of them unless I brought my demands down a bit, no matter how much they may happen to like my qualifications.
Matt Leinart can't say "I'd have been #1 a year ago, so I deserve top money"
Aaron Rodgers isn't saying "I was in the running for the top pick until the night before the draft, so pay me like Alex Smith"
so remind me again, why does he deserve more? 7/24/2006 11:37:01 AM |

Because he sells tickets? Because for once there will be a clip on ESPN about the Saints that isn't prefaced with
"Hey look at what dumb shit Aaron Brooks did today!"
or
"TOM BENSON HATES EVERYONE. WORST OWNER EVER. FUCK NEW ORLEANS!" 7/24/2006 1:13:31 PM |

ticket sales should have nothing to do with it
if anything, makes it all the more amazing that bush didn't get drafted first, kinda makes you think
drafted second, means drafted second.....that is all 7/24/2006 1:50:23 PM |

They're going to make more money off him (initially at least) than Houston is off Williams, so why shouldn't Bush get the benefit of some of that? 7/24/2006 2:36:01 PM |

^because bush does not own the team
the TEAM makes the money, not reggie, bush will get a piece of jersey sales, and some money from the players union for his naming rights, but every player sells tickets, it is not a lineman's fault that they are not as popular as wr/rb/qb's
and if anything, bush should have to turn around and cut a check to espn/fox sports/SI for all the hype and marketing they provided
this could be neverending with your theory, fact is, you sign up to play for a team, they pay you, and they get to keep the ticket revenue 7/24/2006 4:22:18 PM |

That's quite the slippery slope you're on there.
The fact is he's the only reason to be excited about Saints football (unless Drew Brees became the lord and savior of the organization) and to deny that is ludicrous, so of course he's going to want more money than Mario Williams -- and deservedly so.
He's the reason people are coming to the stadium -- it's certainly not for the rest of the product the Saints are putting on the field. 7/24/2006 5:53:02 PM |

So the business should just cave in to his demands.
Keeping in mind that he is a part time player, with an established all-pro in front of him having just inked a big deal just the year before, the team should just cave in to his demands.
You'd be setting an entirel new standard for drafting players if this were to happen -- that's what happened to the NBA. "Excitement" (Bobcats '05) and "potential" (every Sonics draft this millennium) are the reason why so many guys there are drafted higher than they deserve. 7/24/2006 6:46:13 PM |
