oh god damnit.
well we see that we need some big play makers and some solid vets at CB and LB. Otherwise stupid shit like yesterday will just keep happening over and over.
if we dont make the playoffs this year..well then we'll be AFC East Champs next year. we can only get better if we had an offseason next year like we did this one. 12/11/2006 3:35:02 PM |

Yeah, because everyone is thinking they are?
The Jets clearly did more than anyone thought they could this year, including the most diehard fans. Better to overachieve than be the Giants. 12/26/2006 12:07:06 AM |

clearly some sort of statement was being made and then some lame "i was right, you were wrong" attempt was made
go cotchery. that part about the NY headlines and the jets being little banners at the top made me laugh though 12/26/2006 12:10:38 AM |

I'll use this as the Jets thread this year I guess.

I think the Jets are the 2nd best team in the league behind the Packers. They dug themselves a little bit of a hole though and they need some wins to get homefield in the playoffs. 11/6/2011 5:19:09 PM |

Jets defense made Rodgers look like a school girl last year.
But yeah, tough to say a 5-3 team is the class of the AFC... but 6-3 if they win next week and you can argue that...
^^ wait, what? The team they just thoroughly manhandled in every phase might be better? The 1-7 Dolphins might be better? I'm confused to your wording...

^^Not trying to be a smartass, but I'm not sure how I could be any more clear.
I don't always buy into the philosophy that one team beating another automatically makes them the better team, if that was the case upsets would be much harder to classify. Not calling the jets win today an upset, but having an extra week to prepare gives them a decided advantage against Buffalo.
Also, I am a lifelong Bills fan so that may feed into it.

I'm not sure who you would argue is better than the jets in the AFC right now.
They have the 2nd best defense in the NFL and a middle of the pack offense.
Every other team is flawed. The Pats have no defense, the Ravens have no offense... the Steelers, Bills, and Texans are top 10-15 with both units...
But the Jets have a standout defense with a competent offense. Who would anyone select over the Jets right now? 11/6/2011 11:21:50 PM |
Matlock All American 1255 Posts user info edit post |
So you are saying a 5-3 team with Sanchez at quarterback, who are 1-3 on the road, who don't rank in the top 5 in any of the following categories: total offense, passing offense, rushing offense, total defense, passing defense, rushing defense; are flawless???? Or at the very least, elite?
I am failing to see your logic here. Based on statistics alone I (along with countless others I would assume) could select at least a half dozen other teams that I would rank as being better than the jets. 11/6/2011 11:31:47 PM |

Even if they are the clear #1 in the AFC (they aren't), there are at least four -- maybe five -- NFC teams I'd put ahead of them11/7/2011 7:42:13 AM |

Wait, so is there a reason that your rankings should be taken seriously? You admit that perhaps it is only in your fantasy world that the jets are the best in the league and that we are only trying to talk you out of an admitted opinion, not something you claim as fact?
In that case you better go ahead and imagine an undeafeted season and a Super Bowl win because your world is going to be way better than reality for the rest of the season.
Shit, while your at it could you go back to the early 90s and dream me up some Super Bowl trophies for Buffalo?11/7/2011 8:49:41 AM |

it's not an opinion its based off advanced statistics.
and yes the niners are very good and yes i have them at 30:1 odds to win the super bowl and 15:1 odds to win the NFC.

So when you say "I have them at..." then you say it's based on advanced statistics not opinion, am I correct in assuming you created these advanced statistics yourself (if not you would probably say "I saw them at" or "they are rated as")?
How do we know you didn't screw it up. 11/7/2011 11:04:22 AM |

sorry i wasn't very clear.
The efficiency statistics are from other sources.
I typically look at rankings and then modify them slightly based on how i think their team is molded for a playoff game (cold weather, good enough defense, pressure, etc). Then I look at their playoff odds, SOS, divisional odds, over/under wins, super bowl odds, etc.
Then I look for inefficiencies between the lines and reality. That's how I construct my NFL portfolio.
The top ten rankings above are not modified at all by me... that's baseline data.
There's no reason to do all the handicapping work yourself these days, that stuff is all taken care of by spreadsheet monkeys. The profitability comes from exploiting and arbitraging the tighter lines. 11/7/2011 1:20:36 PM |

That's an opinion.
When you say you have them at #2 that's an opinion unless you have your own advanced statistics you are measuring with (and even then it's a subjective calculation of objective stats). You can agree with someone else's advanced stats (I guess you're using DVOA?) but even agreeing is an opinion, since they aren't your stats.
I think there are several teams in the NFC better than the Jets, and probably a couple in the AFC. And yes that is opinion.
