There's an old saying that when the starting QB isn't doing well, the backup QB is the most popular guy on campus. I don't care who starts as long as we are efficient. I see Stone perhaps finding his way back into action some time down the line. This might just be the wake up call he needs. He knows now that the starting spot isn't guaranteed to him, and he'll come out and play like his job is on the line. 9/18/2006 5:33:53 PM |

I'm excited about this. I might have to check the Ticket Exchange to see if anyone's got some tickets available.
I had a friend who played with him at Broughton, so I got to see him helm that team for two years. I was always impressed and thought him incredibly capable of leading an offense. We'll see how the past two years under Amato's tutelage have helped him mature. 9/18/2006 5:59:04 PM |

well heres how i see it
We had Philip and didnt take into account Jay's lack of skill, so we had that year where we had no real running game and our defense was superior but due to lack of QB his turnovers made more points for the other team than our offense could put back on the board. So the next year we tried it again, again a superior defense and turnover prone offense that couldnt put the points on the board to cover its turnover points. Then we put in stone and change to a run heavy offense, we rely on the field position game and our defense to win us the games with a QB that lacked the passing skill to turn the ball over like Jay would, so we go into Alabama style football, defense first, then run, then pass. Now this year that defense is gone, we cant score points off of them, our defense must now put up points to cover ourselves because our D is no where as good. Now we dont have the ammunition to put up those points because all marcus knows is the run game and letting the D win games. now we MUST go back to a balanced attack and be able to move the ball on offense and put up major points. so its simple, put in a passing QB and start the offense up some, now defenses cant stack the box praying that we run every time like we always have.
its simple and yet Chuck couldnt see it till now, took him 2 losses. 9/18/2006 6:09:44 PM |

I am excited about DE playing...never really thought Stone should have replaced Jay..but the best thing about this IF DE doesnt do well in the first half...we will have "Second Half Stone" (who can be impressive as long as he doesnt throw an interception) 9/18/2006 7:16:40 PM |

We have a "brother" coming in as a QB next year. Russell Wilson. the link is to an update a poster on TheWolpacker.com posted.

I know two things about Daniel Evans.
I know we beat him and his brother by 40 last year in intramural basketball.
And i know that he travels on every play.
You can not do a jumpstop if you dont land on both legs simultaneously.
That being said, I bet he's a better QB than Stone... 9/18/2006 8:29:40 PM |

Let's not be so quick to judge.
I see it like this
There is a reason that Stone got the nod over Evans to start the season. That is, our coaches deemed him better.
This should be answered this weekend by Evans being no better (or marginally) than Stone. If our OL is as poor as it seems, then Evans will have just as much trouble as Stone.
But, if Evans is a major improvement over Stone, then we have some really serious questions about our coaching staff that need answered. The main one being, how the fuck did this happen?
As shitty as we have played lately all over the field, it wouldn't surprise me if the second scenario plays out, though I tend to think that it isn't going to happen, so don't get your hopes up. Something that very well could make this scenario play out is, I remember in Davis' first year reading about how the named starter gets ALL the reps in practice. Dunno if this is still true or not, but it is kinda dumb to me to not continue trying to develop the backup right along side the starter.9/18/2006 9:57:40 PM |

Evans looks a lot bigger than he did...those pics of him as #19 are from last year. He's 7 now and looked normal size in the pocked saturday night. He's big enough to handle a beating imo now. He's not as big as Stone, but he's probably big enough now.
^his brother is 6 I believe now.

Better in practice. The guy obviously has some issues transferring that onto the field, because he can't produce at all in the 1st half.

It's definitely a bit odd that two QBs in a row have sucked this horribly, albeit for different reasons. Could be coaching/development, could be the O-line, could be poor scouting, could just be a fluke. Hard to say.

That was the excuse for Stone's performance last year--that Trestman runs NFL-style practices where the starter gets the vast majority of the reps. I don't know if that's actually true, because Stone certainly didn't improve once he was the starter.9/18/2006 10:20:28 PM |

From what I remember, this was just last year and not the year before. The deal was that Trestman ran practice like a pro practice where #1 gets like 85% of the reps, #2 like 10 %, and then everyone else splits the last little bit. And I think that is just reps with the 1st team offense, not total reps.9/18/2006 10:23:00 PM |

maybe/hopefully this move with Daniel Evans at QB will give a spark to the Pack offense, at least with the threat of a passing game our opponents will not be able to put 8 or more defenders in the box which should open up the running game again. Considering the fact that Evans beat out Mike Greco in spring practice, and that Greco is doing a good job leading Pearl River Comm College to a #1 ranking in Junior College football at least gives us hope for the BC game and the remainder of the season. 9/19/2006 6:08:36 AM |

in the Technician today it said he came into State at 170 lbs. and added 25 lbs. since he's been here. so 195, wasn't that Rex Grossmans weight in college?
Grossman is listed at 217 now with the Bears. i just remember how everyone pointed out how slim he was.

well yeah that's what i'm trying to point out. most point to Evans size when talking about him and they think that just b/c he's not over 200 lbs. he's not going to be able to take the punishment. i threw out Rex Grossman as the most recent example of a smart QB that wasn't very big, but successful in college. in fact they share similar dimensions. Grossman was like 6'1" under 200 lbs in college. Evans is currently 6'2" and 191 lbs. now if he just has the QB brain that Grossman did. Grossman got screwed over with the coaching change down at UF. he could've probably won the Heisman if Spurrier would have stayed, and he didn't feel pressure to leave early from Ron Zook due to Chris Leak coming in wanting to start as a true freshman. 9/19/2006 8:29:14 PM |

what the hell, naw i was just trying to argue for why Evans may actually have a shot, which many on this board have not done. a lot of posters in the past have acted like one hard hit is gonna break every rib in his body or give him an instant concussion. let's give him a shot. i only made the Grossman comparisons to show that one doesn't have to be built like Rivers to be a good QB. look at Flutie. he won the Heisman at BC. 9/19/2006 8:40:25 PM |

Jamie Barnette is a good example of a small QB who took a beating but never stayed down.
He was a preseason pick for All-ACC his Senior season, but Torry graduated and Barnette sucked without him. 9/19/2006 8:48:04 PM |
