Yes, I will be back. Already ran by there to pick up Emotionalism at after they opened at 10. Lots of fans were running inside to pick up their album as well. Guy behind the counter said that they will likely play a 30-45 minute set. 5/15/2007 11:10:25 AM |

Man, that place was packed. Good show. Greenville music scene taking off with them and Valient Thor being so big. I used to go see both at peasants when they were just starting out. 5/15/2007 2:19:44 PM |

^agreed, it's much better than FTG.
However, I feel it's lacking some of the raw energy that their previous recordings had. Some of it is too well arranged + polished for my tastes. Still, a great album. 5/16/2007 2:36:47 PM |

I'm liking the "polished" feel to it. It's definitely not a live album, but it has hints of it. Like how they usually count off songs (a live cut clue) only a couple of the new tracks have them doing that.
The style is definitely different, too. A drum kit added to one of the songs (I havent learned them yet, but it was ONE of them...) made for a different feel. Not bad or good change, just different. I like it, though. Probably my favorite of their albums thus far. 5/17/2007 5:32:14 PM |

agreed. These guys were offered the Hopscotch headliner spot, but they turned it down because they think they can sell more than 7K tickets. They are probably right about that, but I certainly doubt they will sell out Walnut Creek.6/28/2010 12:39:43 PM |

^^they sold out the Asheville Civic Center on New Year's Eve, and that place holds "more than 7,600 people" according to the website. granted it was NYE, but still - they bring quite a crowd when they play in NC.
i'm not sure i'll enjoy them in such a big venue as Walnut Creek as i did in the smaller Civic Center, but if i can get lawn seats for $20 in the parking lot it'll be worth it.] 6/28/2010 12:44:30 PM |

that's the other thing
here's a band whose following has been built on live shows and connecting with the audience
what fan who's seen them at the 506 wants to pay $30 to be at the back of the lawn looking at a giant video screen? 6/28/2010 1:29:56 PM |
arog20012001 All American 10023 Posts user info edit post |
I think they said the final tally at the Asheville Civic Center was only 6,700 or so. And that was also in Asheville which is like the hippy capital of the mid-Atlantic, so....
I just don't see the Avett's selling out Walnut Creek. IMO, they would have been the perfect act to play at the Downtown Amphitheater.
All this hullaballoo about Koka Booth et. al. not being loud enough, but when I saw them there, I was probably 50 ft. from the stage, and they sounded plenty loud to me. 6/28/2010 1:33:23 PM |

most fans enjoy seeing their favorite bands live, so they'd be happy to sit on the lawn and watch them - even if it means they don't sound as good (because it's a large venue) and even if they paid $30 for the ticket i mean, big venue or small, if i'm a big enough fan i'm going to go regardless.
Quote : | "I just don't see the Avett's selling out Walnut Creek." |
i agree, i don't think they'll sell it out. but i think they'll sell enough to make it worth not taking that other headliner position.
and besides, TWC obviously believes they can sell enough tickets, else they wouldn't be paying them for the gig.]6/28/2010 1:34:18 PM |

really? They hated the biggest show they've ever played to a homegrown group of fans? could have surprised me the way they were getting into it and how much the crowd loved it.
Maybe they hated that they couldn't play louder, but they certainly didn't hate the show.6/28/2010 2:14:09 PM |

^x5 Wow, how wildly unnecessary and inappropriate of you to say...Last time I checked, it's not the job of you or me or anyone to judge whether or not someone is a "live music maniac" and whether or not that has any bearing on how much they enjoy the concerts they attend.
Anyway...FWIW, The Avett Bros. were one of the biggest draws of Saturday at Bonnaroo, and that's even while interfering with Jimmy Cliff, The Melvins, and Mumford & Sons' sets. I only passed through, but there were at least as many people there as were there for Phoenix and The Flaming Lips. With that said, I still don't think they'll sell out Walnut Creek. But if they could do it anywhere, it'd probably be Raleigh.
And as far as Koka Booth...I've heard from everyone that the sound there sucks if you get stuck on the lawn, but I've only been to one show there (My Morning Jacket) and we were in the pit, and the sound was fine. I think if you get in the pit, the sound will be just fine, but if you get stuck on the lawn, you're fucked.

I do hope they sell out, or come close to it because it would be great for them but i'm not really interested. It will be just like the rest of their bigger shows since the latest record. Die hard fans are as close as possible in order to feel the music and see the band. The lawns are full of casual I, & L, & Y fans who don't know any words and use the music as the background soundtrack to their conversations like they would at a bar.6/28/2010 2:24:16 PM |

This definitely annoys me, too, at bigger concerts. Pretty annoying how loud people like to talk while the band they paid $30-$50 to see is playing.
As far as vinylbandit, I'm pretty well acquainted with him, thumper What makes it more frustrating, though, is that I think he actually means well most of the time. I think he probably ends up with his foot in his mouth a lot, but I still reserve the right to call him out when he says something that is downright mean or rude.6/28/2010 3:04:20 PM |
