Well Stark HAD to build a suit in order to sustain his own life for starters. The whole point of Iron Man was that he was a physically weak man inside this armor but that being physically weak didn't mean he couldn't have courage and fight evil. Batman was physically and intellectually the perfect man but emotionally weak. So we see them adopting radically different personas one meant to project strength, the other mean to inspire fear through its mysteriousness.

And for the most part just about every hero has been puedo-psychoanalyized to the point that all could be described as 'tortured' if you want to be that simplistic about it. The things that torture Stark and Wayne and their motivations are very different from one another. For Batman his emotional torture is his motivation for fighting evil-doers, for Iron Man it is largely a result of fighting said evil doers. If you want to be that simplistic in the comparison "emotionally tortured millionaire fights evil doers" describes dozens of heros. And emotionally tortured _____ describes just about all of them.

Also batman does have a fair few technological gadgets and wears a type of armor and doesn't have to worry about emp weapons shutting down his suit and him just being stuck sitting there like an idiot...so I dunno how stupid that is considering the number of times that happens to iron man. Luckily his power always seems to reroute just in time...but one of these days.

My understanding is that Stark was shot in the heart or something while in a POW camp, or something to that effect. Disregarding how he got the parts he needed to make a life-support suit for a moment, how could he have lived long enough to even get it built?

The only thing I seem to remember was that it was sloooooowly killing him. Also, I think it was a piece of shrapnel, not a bullet.

The only thing I didn't get as a kid was how he could make this elaborate suit to stay alive but not just simply remove the shrapnel. Maybe he got to that later - after he escaped from the prison camp?

the suit isn't what's keeping him alive

he has something else in his chest (totally unrelated to the suit) that keeps his heart beating


EDIT: when he's being held captive, the FIRST suit/exoskeleton he makes is to keep him alive and help him escape

but back in the US he can't go trouncing around in the suit all the time so he makes a smaller device that you can't see while he's wearing clothes and updates the exoskeleton suit/makes more
