stadium seating is the worst fucking thing ever
a grand total of three rows are at a proper movie-viewing angle
everything else is either too low (same problem as a normal theater, wtg stadium seating) or so high i'm looking down on the screen

It was awesome. Saw it Tuesday night. A lot of people won't get it, and if they don't get it, then they should stick to watching movies with Vin Diesel in them or maybe go and see Are We Done Yet with Ice Cube this weekend instead.
But don't doubt the movie, see it, just expect to have fun and realize that it's supposed to be bad exploitation, and it works out to be better than most serious movies. 4/5/2007 10:45:26 AM |

it was amazing.
one question though, what does it mean, exactly, to "know the score"
several characters in the film were advertised to have this quality

*SPOILERS IN THIS POST*
so planet terror was fun, lots of good gross outs and deaths and gags and whatnot, but it's not really my kind of flick and some things never registered (there's a lot of fucking talk about "wray" vs. "el-wray" for it to never be explained)
but jesus fucking christ, death-proof is a fucking piece of art...more than half an hour of character development for a fucking 30-second super amazing awesome ridiculous quad death, and then thrown right into a completely different situation with no reference points and a god-knows-how-long SINGLE SHOT at a restaurant that says "hey, guys, if you like all these movies my girls are talking about, just you fucking wait and see." holy fuck. i agree that it had little tiny pacing issues in the name of vanity ("hey guys, all right, you remember these guys? they were having basically the same conversation in kill bill, you know? all right."), but they were worth it. ] 4/7/2007 2:46:29 AM |
God All American 28747 Posts user info edit post |
I think you're over-exaggerating it a little bit. The character development was very, very weak in Death Proof. I would have liked more background on Stuntman Mike, and the fact that he is so easily "woundable" and "killable" was really lame. 4/7/2007 3:21:39 AM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
perhaps i am, but vanishing point and duel are two of my favorite movies, so that might have something to do with it...two fantastic movies that don't have a goddamn bit of backstory or anything resembling an epilogue.
the fact that the women are sex objects-in-distress and then immediately turn around and become impervious aggressors and stuntman mike turns in just the opposite way is the whole point of making a movie like this. how do we extend an awesome car chase that's come to a natural conclusion? the same way you extend a scripted wrestling match...by inexplicably turning the tide.
"character development" was the wrong term to use. as a fan of tarantino's, i could watch his characters babble in their skins for god knows how long, and that's the kind of thing i'm happy to see on the screen. in a movie like this that's designed as an exercise in style, it's even more appropriate that all of that "banal" activity come to absolutely nothing but a beautiful four-way snuff shot.
maybe i should chalk all this up to zoe ball, but the fact is that while planet terror had plenty of laughs and zingers and cringe moments and its own share of suspense, i was curled nervously in my seat for extremely long portions of death proof, and that's what really matters. ] 4/7/2007 3:41:22 AM |
federal All American 2638 Posts user info edit post |
^ I agree with what you said about the character development. I found myself getting bored with the 30 minutes, to be honest, but then when they're killed so quickly and forgotten, you really start to appreciate everything that happened. I realized that I had (unknowingly) actually started to like these characters and when Stuntman Mike..
you get the picture.
I still can't decide which one I liked more. I'll end up seeing it again for sure, but I gotta say, the end to Death Proof was probably the best I've ever seen. 4/7/2007 7:01:13 AM |
