You sir, are fucked. Seriously though... no Bojangles within 3 hours of Fairfax, VA. Just moved back to NC from Reston, VA (just 15 minutes away)... nice area but cost of living is $texas and traffic blows.

There are actually a couple of Bojos in some troubled areas on the Maryland side of DC. Beyond that, get ready for a long drive south (beyond Richmond in the 95 corridor, near Roanoke on 81). Popeye's is going to be the closest you can get.

Quote :
"the metro system there really sucks. i.e. it closes at 1am on the weekends and bars close at 2am."

Wrong. Try 3 AM (you have to catch the last train out a few minutes before that).
Quote :
"There is a little more to do there than here, yes, but if you actually like to do anything outdoorsy such as hike, mountain climb, canoe, etc.. this is a much better area for you."

There is plenty of hiking, mountain climbing, and canoeing within an hour.

" I found, through my experience, that the pluses of the DC metro area in no way compensated for the increase in living costs, traffic, and overall shitty attitude of the people there."

You are actually on to something here. The problems with the DC area isn't a lack of things to do, it's that it is often a pain to go do them, and of course cost of living.

Oh, actually you are right (I was just thinking Virginia, I had never looked at Maryland before.

But going to my third point... with traffic being what it is, to get to the other side of the DC beltline during normal business hours, it could very well take you 2 hours.

you are not entirely correct. some of the stops do close at 1am on the weekends. different stops close at different times. rosalyn, by gt, closes at 1am on the weekends. So my statement wasn't entirely accurate, but gtown is where i did most of my drinking.

i interned there during the summer, and i will be working in fairfax full time starting next summer. the housing is much more than here, but salaries are usually higher to compensate for it (although you can't really afford a house anytime soon in your career, you can afford rent). there is a lot to do so i think it will be pretty nice living there.

Foggy Bottom is just as close as Rosslyn to GT, and you can catch the last train out.

for some reason I went to the K Street Lounge and my gf's sister knows the owner. I drank a $300 dollar bottle of champagnie.

it was pretty lame tho. Amstel light was 6 bucks

This is not true. i have used this station after 1am within the last 3 months. It may have once been true(i doubt it) or maybe it was closed the weekend you were here.

My salary in DC was only 1k higher, but then again I could have just gotten fucked over for being fresh out of college and dumb. But I did manage to buy a nice house here after working for one year, which would be entirely impossible to do in DC.

but you were right on the station time. It must have since been changed, because it was frequently a problem for me.

Very expensive. But you feel like you have actually accomplished something. The standard of living and pace of life up there is a whole lot better. NC holds people back.

I'm seeing about 40% as the average increase in overall cost of living, would you all say this is accurate? The actual places I will be working are Sterling and Ashburn Va. Having performed an exhaustive google search, I think 40% is close.

they have a limited menu compared to NC and have service rivaling Hardees. Learn to eat Popeyes or Royal Farms fried chicken instead. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out what is an acceptable alternative for good breakfast biscuits all day long.

Also Union Station. I went to Landover and Union Station once each. Wouldn't go to Landover and only Union Station if really desperate.
