I don't think there is any evidence of a physical, natural difference in intelligence between the races. But there are plenty of societal reasons why blacks, on the average, are less intelligent that their white counterparts. It isn't race related, but socio-economically determined. Black people, on average, are poor, and black people, on average are less likely to come from a 2-parent home. Both of those things contribute to not being as intelligent, because school is treated with less emphasis in poorer communities and single-parents have less time to watch over their kids and make sure they are taking school seriously.

I think the score differential would probably be eliminated if you controlled for these important differences.

On a side note, I would like to ask what makes you certain that there couldn't be an inherent difference in intelligence. I'd argue that there isn't, but there is a possibility that there could be. Some people are born with more mental prowess than others, but nurture usually overwhelms it in the end. I don't think it is safe to assume that there couldn't possibly be an innate difference though.

Yes, that has been done countless times. And the results are always the same, unless someone purposefully manipulates the data.

Read "The Bell Curve" if you really want to get into it. Sure, it's a racially insensitive book by nature, but the research and analysis is very solid.

Yeah, that is how it happened sorta. However, we shouldn't ignore the point that slavery existed almost everywhere and every group had a different idea about what slavery entailed. Also, there were plenty of black Africans, like people of any other group, who were self-interested assholes (see TWW for more examples). Guns mad a difference too. And, throughout history, there have been leaders who have recognized the futility in certain situations and tried to get what they could out of it.

None of that changes the horrific crimes that were committed against Africans on their voyage to and in the Americas.

The textbook and the teacher were extremely effective in teaching me the material for the course (the teacher had taught High School for alittle over fourty years and had two doctorates). I remember the times while we were studying in class in which the teacher asked some of the students who were performing well in the class to help tutor students who were not. I happened to be sitting next to both an asian male and a black female whom both were not performing very well. That black female was truly taking advantage of the excellent education oppourtunities available at Enloe to people of all races.

In my opinion Enloe is a perfect example to be used as a micro-study into the affects of Culture upon academic success. My little brother is a Senior there this year and I have discussed issues of race there with him in the past and he has had a similiar experience to myself there.

I don't believe that differences in the various 'races' mental abilities are statistically significant (ie, samples from testing would not fall outside of a 95% confidence interval for a truly unbiased test). However, I do believe that differences in cultures would be statistically signifcant.

The reason I vehemently oppose those who suggest tests such as the SAT are racist is because I believe that all people who do so have some alterior motive in suggesting that fact. Either those people are themselves racist, are doing it for some monitary gain, or are doing it for their own personal moral satisfaction.

None of these people are attempting to address the root cultural cause of this percieved racial educational gap in our country.

Do I know how to properly address this gap?

If I did, I wouldn't be spending my time posting on TWW.

^I've been ignoring cathocutie because the statements she has been making are so typically and generally ignorant...but to suggest that Green Hope is a better performing public school than Enloe is an absurd notion that agitates local issues that, in my opinion, are total racist bullshit. Enloe is an exceptional school that serves many different purposes and remains nationally ranked year after year. cathocutie needs to shut it now.

(By the way, you made a great post that got at so much...it was so perfect I almost feel like you made it up, but I feel you didn't because that's the deal.)

well put, I, for the most part agree.

the reason why some black students do poorly isn't racism, it's their own unwillingness to put forth the time and effort involved int getting the most out of the education system. most white kids don't just show up for class on occasion and get A's, even if attendance wasn't part of the grade, most kids would fail in such circumstances.

i agree that home influences / situations can also affect academic performance but this is more of a class difference rather than a racial one. as a lower-class home environment is often more unstable than a middle to upper-class one.


to fix it isn't easy, but it can start with better teacher pay (significantly better), better maintainence of school facilities, more freedom for the teacher to teach the subject (less curriculum control/dictation, as long as it meets a certain standard or better it shouldn't matter) and proper weighing of assignment grades, in-class performance, and overall participation for the final grade.

additionally some kids have to be taught in a different manner than others (learning methods) these should be fluidly incorporated into the classroom without disruption or perference.

i dunno if any of this makes sense though.


the test, the SAT, by itself, is not racist, at least the version I took wasn't.
