maybe TOB could never get over the hump at BC because of the fact that he couldnt get recruits to go there that dont want to play in a 45000 seat stadium in the middle of a religious campus...maybe here where we have the facilities to get recruits he will get over that hump...i say give him a shot, wouldnt have been my first pick but hey, i think we could have done worse...he has discipline and loyal assistant coaches...i personally dont think Chuck was the problem but that he couldnt keep a good offensive coordinator was the big issue... 12/7/2006 9:01:27 AM |

haha, I never thought this thread would reach two pages. I think Tom O'Brien will be a solid coach for us, I just would have like to seen us take a gamble on someone like a Jimbo Fisher. But then again, Amato was a gamble and look what happened with that. 12/7/2006 10:39:36 AM |

he became one of nc state's winningest coaches? propelled our program onto a national stage? got our people to donate ridiculous amounts of money? got our fans to sell-out season tickets in record numbers, and by lifetime rights? instilled a fervor in football when nobody gave a damn before? raised expectations for our program? placed more kids into the nfl than any other coach has, and when alot of them draft picks were virtually ignored as high school recruits? 12/7/2006 10:47:50 AM |

I think people are mostly upset over the fact that TOB doesn't seem to be the kind of guy that would bring alot of hype/attention to the program right off the bat. The best thing for TOB to do is go out and win alot in order to do that. 12/7/2006 1:06:44 PM |

Supposedly, this is a college sport, right? TOB is a winning coach with one of the highest graduation rates in the country.
Quote : | "In 2005, Boston College was ranked number one in the country by USA Today when the paper re-ordered the final 2005 football Top 25 by APR (Academic Progress Rate) score to measure a combination of athletic and academic success. BC was one of six Division I-A institutions with a football graduation rate of 90% or better, along with Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist University and the University of Southern Mississippi" |

How do you know Mike Sherman is a better coach than TOB? Because he coached in the NFL. So what. So did Steve Spurrier, look what happened to his record as Redskins Coach. TOB is a great fit for this program. Hes got discipline. As an ex-marine, he will get the job done correctly. Just because someone has a big name does not mean they are a better coach. Take Urban Meyer, he didn't have a big name, look what hes done. If state wanted a big name we would have hired John Madden. 12/7/2006 7:55:39 PM |

Look at what Mike Sherman did at TAMU before he took the Green Bay job. TAMU fans are still mad that they hired Franchione over Sherman the second time aroudn.

Urban Meyer went to a BCS game and lead Utah to unprecedented levels in that schools history.

I think people are rediculous to compare O'Brien to Herb. First you are slightly overlooking the fact that they don't even coach the same sport. Herb was a number crunching deep thinker. O'Brien was a marine. You don't have to blow smoke out your ass and jump up and down or wear bright red shoes to be a good football coach. I think O'Brien bears more resemblence to Dick Sheridan ..... maybe some of you have heard of him???? 12/7/2006 8:10:27 PM |
