this thread shouldn't have gone to page 2, coz dubai ain't settling for number 2.

how many records they have already?

largest mall
tallest building (2008)
rotating tower
tallest hotel
most luxurious hotel (same hotel)
biggest fleet of rolls royces (same hotel)
largest man-made islands

and probably a few other.

Because of my job with the Navy here in the Middle East, we get to go to Dubai a lot.. The place is completely unreal.. Downtown Dubai has what looks to be several hundred skyscrapers all going up at the same time.. Imagine trying to build all of New York at once.

The standard of living here is so much better than the US (although, the flip side of that is that poverty is disgustingly inhumane in their ghetto-equivalents). I'm about to move into my first apartment (paid for by Uncle Sam) that's the size of my parent's house back in NC, fully furnished with high-speed internet, marble floors, and, since the Navy is forcing me to spend every dime of my off-base housing benefits, they're throwing in a lease on a car for a year with insurance. That's the norm for the city of Manama, Bahrain.

Dubai number #1

number one at fire safety and killing their exploited immigrant labor. gg you fuckers

this entire thread is fucking stupid as shit - building cool shit isn't really that extraordinary - it just seems awesome in the middle east where usually you fuckers can't stop blowing yourselves up long enough to rebuild your bulldozed houses

they could power 10-15 apartments off of the energy they're wasting on rotating this building, and a rotating building isn't even a new concept.

their tourism industry is supported by rich oil moguls from neighboring countries though. when the oil fields stop being so cheap to pump out, UAE will be quickly toppled by all their greedy neighbors.

well, dubai is an emirate of The UAE, its not its own country.

the UAE is actually very rich in oil, but Dubai is different from the other emirates in that only a small part of its GDP is from oil.

World's tallest twisting tower.

330 m (1,083 ft) tall. Twists by 90 degrees. Each floor twists by 1.2 degrees compared to the previous one. Apparently there is only one other tower in the world to do that, The Turning Torso, in Sweden, which is 190 m (623 feet) high:

like once you get to dubai and pay $1000 to stay in a hotel....what are you supposed to DO there?! Its blazing hot pretty much year around......golf?

they need to concentrate on fighting poverty at some point.....they ironically have the worst in the entire middle east, and the lowest paid workers....it's awful

does anybody else continually say "your welcome" everytime you see a dubai feat? It's all our money

they have the worst poverty in the middle east? and you know this how? are you saying yemenis are on average more well-off than emiratis?

again, you are f'ing joking, right?

as for workers, they are lowest paid? and you know this how? maybe they are, maybe they aren't. but construction workers (laborers) in the middle east in general are paid peanuts (they are foreign), just as foreign labor in most any other country (mexicans in US?). typically about $200/month. yes, it IS awful.

[currently at floor 122, highest of ANY building ever, and 453 meters, 2nd highest in the world]

here is a schematic showin the cross section at different levels. the inspiration of the building is a desert flower:

^ really? wow!

according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_world

of the top 200 tallest buildings in the world, 8 are in Dubai.

but there are 17 buildings under construction all slated to be taller than 300 meters. and they will all be finished in a year or two.

and these 17 will all be in the top 50 tallest by the time they are finished!!!

count the cranes in just this one pic with like 3-4 buildings in view! (that's the world's tallest building under construction in the middle)

OK, as if a rotating tower (1st post of this thread) wasn't enough, guess what is being planned now...

A tower with individually rotating FLOORS

Wind Powered Rotating Skyscraper!!!

And the speed and direction apparently can be controlled, so the skyscraper will keep on constantly changing shape!

YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/v/vJRDZE5xW2Y (MUST SEE)

(reminds me of a Rubik's Cube)

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117625795099465923-WFaTx4FSsy1oW4x8lS4eK1518io_20070418.html

Click link for video simulation.

Quote :
"In skyscraper-crazy Dubai, tall isn't enough. In a design to be unveiled today in the oil-rich emirate, David Fisher, an Italian-Israeli architect, has dreamed up a 68-story combination hotel, apartment and office tower where the floors would rotate 360 degrees. Each floor would rotate independently, creating a constantly changing architectural form.

Each story of the tower would be shaped like a doughnut and be attached to a center core housing elevators, emergency stairs and other utilities. Wind turbines placed in gaps between the doughnuts would generate electricity.

The doughnuts won't rotate fast enough to give guests upset stomachs. A single rotation would take around 90 minutes. "It's quite slow," says Mr. Fisher."

If red x: http://www.urlfan.com/local/dubai_skyscraper_with_rotating_floors/39842242.html

http://www.alternative-energy-news.info/wind-power-rotating-skyscraper/

WOW, the wind turbines are placed between floors, and each generates enough electricity for 50 families. So only 4 can provide power for all 200 families who will be resident, and the remaining more than 40 turbines can power other things!

Will produce enough energy for 10 skyscrapers!!!

Quote :
"Self Powered Architecture

Neatly stacked in between each floor is a horizontal wind turbine (58 in total). Each turbine can produce 0.3 megawatt of electricity and is said to be able to produce enough energy for 50 families. The turbines are integrated in such a way that they are hardly visible from the outside. Their close proximity makes them easy to maintain. “Producing that much electric energy without any implication on the aesthetic aspect of the building is a revolutionary step in tapping alternative energy sources.” Dynamic Architecture’s website also claims that combined with solar panels they could generate up to $7million worth of surplus electricity every year.

Each turbine can produce 0.3 megawatt of electricity, compared to 1-1.5 megawatt generated by a normal vertical turbine (windmill). Considering that Dubai gets 4,000 wind hours annually, the turbines incorporated into the building can generate 1,200,000 kilowatt-hour of energy. As average annual power consumption of a family is estimated to be 24,000 kilowatt-hours, each turbine can supply energy for about 50 families. The Dynamic Architecture tower in Dubai will be having 200 apartments and hence four turbines can take care of their energy needs. The surplus clean energy produced by the remaining 44 turbines can light up the neighborhood of the building. However, taking into consideration that the average wind speed in Dubai is of only 16 km/h the architects may need to double the number of turbines to light up the building to eight. Still there will be 40 free turbines, good enough to supply power for five skyscrapers of the same size."

Burj Dubai now the world's tallest building, and has the most floors of any building ever. (broke the floor record back in April)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Dubai

Quote :
"As of July 21, 2007, the tower's height is reported by its developers to be 512.1 metres (1,680.1 feet), totaling 141 completed floors,[2] indicating that the Burj Dubai has surpassed Taipei 101 (509 m (1,670 ft)) becoming the tallest high-rise building in the world.

Current records

Building with most floors: 141 (previously Sears Tower - 110)
Tallest skyscraper to highest occupied floor: 512.1 m (1,680.1 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)
Tallest skyscraper to top of roof: 512.1 m (1,680.1 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 449.2 m (1,473.8 ft)
Tallest skyscraper to architectural top: 512.1 m (1,680.1 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 509.1 m (1,670.3 ft)
Vertical concrete pumping (for a building): 512.1 m (1,680.1 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft) "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Dubai

A month ago it surpassed the CN Tower in Canada.

Current records:

Quote :
"Tallest freestanding structure: 574.5 meters (1,885 ft) (previously CN Tower - 553.3 m (1,815 ft))
Building with most floors: 154 (previously Sears Tower / World Trade Center - 110)
Vertical concrete pumping (for a building): 588 m (1,929 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 449.2 m (1,474 ft))
Vertical concrete pumping (for any construction): 588 m (1,929 ft).[11] (previously Riva del Garda Hydroelectric Power Plant - 532 m (1,745 ft)) "

And wow, this is amazing:

Quote :
"Burj Dubai's last two milestones will be to surpass the 628.8 m (2,063 ft) height of the KVLY-TV Mast in North Dakota, United States to become the world's tallest structure, and to pass the Warsaw radio mast in Gabin, Poland (646.4 m (2,121 ft) until it collapsed in 1991) to become the world's tallest structure of any type ever built."

FUNNY THING is the tallest building in Dubai is "only" 355 meters tall, and this is going to be more than twice as tall when finished next year.

Expected to be ~818 m. tall.

other interesting tidbits:

Quote :

uh oh... the jooz.

Quote :
"Some see outlandish designs like these as a sign of an architectural apocalypse. "It makes me ill," says Eugene Kohn, principal at New York-based Kohn Pedersen Fox, a firm recognized for handsome, modernist -- albeit stationary -- designs. "Some of these buildings are going to the absurd.""

yeah, yeah. Anti-Semite.

Quote :
"Mejren Cos.'s Mr. Jardali says terrorism isn't an issue for the developers. "Dubai is the safest place in the world. It is very peaceful. So we are not thinking about such a thing," he says."

um, that sure is optimistic. why don't i feel reassured?

Quote :
"Carol Willis, founder of the Skyscraper Museum in New York, which is about to mount a show on Dubai, is optimistic. "The future plans seem to be grounded on a substantial and intelligent plan on inventing a new city," she said. She cites the massive government investment in infrastructure and the rock-bottom labor costs as making these projects possible."

and that's kind of troubling.

Quote :
"Mr. Fisher['s] ... claim to fame is the development of the "Leonardo da Vinci Smart Bathrooms," a prefabricated bathroom system that hotels and resorts use to quickly build new facilities.

Mr. Fisher says he got the tower idea while looking at condominiums for sale in Miami several years ago. He noticed the much lower price tags for units without water views. Ten days later ... He jotted down his idea and applied for a patent in the U.S. in 2004. He has never designed a high-rise building."

Alright. Now I'm getting skeptical. You mean, some guy who's only known for having invented McBathrooms, is going to make some 68-story, wind-driven turbine powered tower with independently rotating floors... even though he's never designed a high rise in his life?

Quote :
"But he has assembled a formidable design team, however, including high-rise engineer Leslie Robertson, who is best known for designing the innovative structure of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers that were destroyed by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001."

well, okayyy ... but that's not exactly a selling point.

Quote :
""It's not rocket science," says Mr. Robertson of the building's structure. "It's a basic structural core, a concrete silo and the doughnuts that wander around."

mmmm... donuts.

Quote :
"He says supplying electricity to the floors will be similar to how a moving train captures power by staying in constant contact with a power source ... The plumbing is more of a challenge ... Mr. Fisher also demurs about how the toilets will flush. "I can't disclose all the details," Mr. Fisher says."

but I'm sure he'll let us know once he gets something figured out.

Quote :
"
Occupants on the top five floors would control the direction and speed by voice activated remote control.

The other floors would be programmed by the architect or building manager."

now this is the most troubling. you've got this awesome artistic vision, but all the floors have to be in sync to keep it from turning into some raggedy-looking beatup old rubiks cube. Yet you're goign to let the various owners of the top 5 floors arbitrarily turn their floors any which way they want.

now thats just going to look like shit.

dude what? lol. First, there is plenty to do in Dubai. 2nd, its not hot all year round. In winter its quite cool. I would know since i've lived in Abu Dhabi for 11 years. Even before all this hype there was tons to do there. Poverty you say? The only poverty I saw were the Indians and Pakistanis that did all the manual labor. How is that any different then the US? except that they aren't illegal and they are governed pretty harshly. If they slip up they're sent right back where they came from because its a privilege and an opportunity for them to have a better life in the Emirates then it is in their own countries.

And of course you have the nomads but I wouldn't really count them as poverty. They've been living like that for centuries and its their way of life. They have no use for money or other 'modern' amenities.

so if I, as an American, wanted to visit Dubai for vacation would the dubaians be like "omg look an american throw rox!" or would they be like "look the tourists have arrived!". i mean i don't want to get all the way over there and have to ask the waiter to hold the spit. what is the typical UAE citizen's view of the typical american citizen?
