"We put the wheels back on in a big way," Fulmer said. "I think everybody is recognizing that. We had an exciting year. We're fighting right back where we were." You never know with these recruiting rankings, with game footage and media accounts of high school stars overmatching opponents. Some pan out, some don't. But ask just about any coach in the country, and he'd rather be sitting where Fulmer is than the alternative. The story here is how the Volunteers rebounded. Fulmer made immediate changes on his staff and refocused on finding great talent. The one-time UT offensive lineman didn't just dig in against criticism. He used it as motivation to be better. But that's easier said than done. Fulmer, 56, had hit a stage of his career, a point in life, where so many great coaches begin to slide, where even strong programs fall apart. Being a college football coach is a brutally exhausting and competitive job. It's the reason so few make it past 15 seasons at one place – Fulmer is the dean of SEC coaches – let alone find a way to ramp up things. When you've been around the block a number of times, there aren't a lot of new tricks, not a lot of new friends to make, just a lot of fresh, energetic new coaches to compete against. And once momentum swings against you, as it had with Fulmer, few recover. "We're very excited about this class," Fulmer said. "We filled some needs we needed to fill immediately, some guys who are rated very highly and outstanding on tape. And I think we also have a good core group of guys we can work with and develop." The stars will get the headlines here, and Tennessee signed a bunch of them Wednesday. There is defensive back Eric Berry out of Georgia, linebacker Chris Donald out of Tennessee and defensive end Ben Martin from Cincinnati, all rivals.com top-20 national recruits. Then there is junior college stars Kenny O'Neal, a wideout from California, and Brent Vinson, an athlete out of a prep school in Virginia. Basically, Tennessee aggressively went all over the country and dragged kids back to Rocky Top. "We always start with it is a great university to sell," Fulmer said. "It is still the winningest program over the last 75 years in the country. People don't realize that. [And it's] certainly one of the winningest teams in the Southeastern Conference during my time here. We have exciting style of play on both sides of the ball. "There are some dynamic young people in this class that bring speed and athletic ability, and a couple of defensive linemen that look like they have a chance to be very good players." Fulmer will spend Thursday barnstorming the state, hyping up the recruiting class. He has booster functions set in Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis, a few hundred people at each stop. "It's a big circus," he said. He'll be staring out at plenty of people who began to doubt him in fall of 2005, plenty of people who understandably wondered about the direction of the program, who wondered whether Phil Fulmer should remain the head coach in Knoxville for much longer. I heard dave glenn this morning talking about the letter that bowden sent to the appeals committee regarding brandon warren's transfer request. He calls out the tennessee coaches from recruiting him while he's enrolled at florida state and wants the committee to deny him. Sounds like some real bad blood there between warren/fulmer and bowden. If he's tellin the truth though, that is some fucked up shit right there.

Anybody else hear this?

Without his release from FSU, Warren must pay his way for the next academic year to a Division I university, including nearby Tennessee where it is believed Warren wants to transfer. Deirdre Warren said no school has had contact with her son. Under NCAA rules Warren would not be allowed to play immediately at another Division I university Ð that means the 2007 season -- unless he receives a hardship waiver from the NCAA. However, Warren could play immediately at an NCAA Division II university such Carson-Newman, which is also close to his Alcoa (TN.) home. The faculty panel that heard his case released the following statement on Monday: "It is the determination of the faculty panel that the information presented by Brandon Warren does not rise to the level of 'objective evidence that proves the student-athlete's extraordinary hardship' and is insufficient to support his appeal of the NCAA and FSU transfer policy. Panel members were unanimous in their conclusions that the appeal should be denied and the transfer rule should be enforced." Prior to leaving without explanation on Feb. 8, Warren considered in mid-December the possibility of returning to his Tennessee home rather then continuing his education at FSU. Warren told the Tallahassee Democrat at the time that he was concerned about his mother's health. “I think the whole thing came to a head during Thanksgiving when I was too sick to come down to the Florida game,” Deirdre Warren said. "And when he called me a few times after that I was still sick and I guess he thought, 'OK, I can't live with this anymore. I need to be close and keep up with my mom and see what's going on.' " He left FSU on Feb. 9. That night, according to his mom, an FSU coach told her that her son would not be given a release and would not play football at another school. Warren, who did not speak with the media upon leaving FSU, requested to be released from his scholarship on Feb. 19. FSU head coach Bobby Bowden denied Warren's request on Feb. 27 Neither parties were present during the appeal on Friday. Bowden represented his side in a letter and Brandon Warren and his family made their appeal via a teleconference. The Bowden letter, according to what Deirdre Warren read to the Knoxville News-Sentinel, concludes: "When Brandon came by my office in January 2007 to tell me he wanted to transfer from FSU, I told him I would not even consider it. If players are allowed to break a contract whenever they wish, we do not need the national letter-of-intent. Without it we would allow unscrupulous coaches to steal players from other schools. It would cost thousands of dollars every time this occurs. "I would like to see Brandon become a man and honor his commitment.""

well, its a LOT different there than it is at State. State reminds me of ND, which reminds me of the NFL, you have a few huge parking lots surrounding the stadium out in the middle of nowhere. Whereas UT, the stadium is smack in the middle of campus, so there are a lot of small parking lots, and a lot of bars nearby. I would say half the people tailgate at their cars, half tailgate at bars, and almost all walk up and down the Strip (Cumberland Ave.), thats where most of the bars, vendors, bands, DJs etc are.

If you can get in good with someone who has a boat, the Vol Navy is an amazing experience, only bad thing is you are far away from the Strip. The highrollers and old timers are in the parking lot and garage next to the stadium, you can do just about anything you want there aside from murder and rape, and thats where you are likely to see past players and Bruce Pearl walking around drinking.



Elsewhere you are supposed to not drink on the street but as long as you arent obvious about it they dont care (plastic cup, flash etc). The home schedule sucks this year, but I will be back for at least 2 games probably, we usually do the Strip for a while then head over to the stadium lot where I have two big ass groups of friends that have setups there (tv's, satellite, buffetts, liqour luge, full bar etc).

Oh, and from page 1, its worth it to see the band march to the stadium, this is usually about and hour and a half before kickoff.

I partially agree with what you are saying about State being more like an NFL setting. The large parking lots are the only similarity. Most stadiums in the center of campus do not have bars near by. Take for example Chapel Hill or UMD. Bars are more expensive and I bet college students would rather spend their time drinking in a cheaper centralized location vs. a the more expensive, overcrowded, tough to get the bartender to look at you option

Slick Shelley transferred to Tulsa... WR, really small guy though, was highly ranked in HS, #12 best WR in the country I think, but never saw the field at TN, I don't think he played a single snap. I remember seeing him in the Army AA Game and he was really impressive but nothing ever really panned out.

On a positive note though, this must mean the incoming WRs are really looking good since we lost our top 3 WRs and Shelley still didn't think he would get playing time.

We are going to be really really young/new at WR and I just dont like the thought of running a no huddle, with freshmen/sophomore WRs at Florida, Bama etc. where its loud as shit
