Ya, I'm from Raleigh and ya, the westcoast may be a rare exception. The west coast is a bit isolated from everything else so I can accept it not being much of an issue there, although I know for a fact Stanford was claiming Duke as a new rival a few years ago. You better believe Duke is present in the minds of the non acc south, midwest and southcentral. Also note that the northeast is where the most people are and where there are many duke fans there are MANY MANY more duke haters.

Um, of course there are. That's because they interact with Duke fans on a regular basis. I try not to generalize because there are plenty of Duke fans I like (even on here..) but the majority of Northeast Duke fans are unbearable. Plus the whole Big East - ACC dynamic comes into play. Big East fans hate the ACC and vice versa. Duke (and to a lesser extent UNC) is the main ACC bball name so Big East fans genearlly hate them. Considering the Big East is the only conference that most Northeast folks follow it stands to reason that New England and NY will mostly loathe Duke..

^ Stanford kids/fans are in their own little world over in Palo Alto. No one really listens to them or cares about them... they are so self-important..

actually the Maryland game was up in College Park during 2002. you maybe thinking of River's Senior Day game that happened the next year where all we had to do was pick up a first down and run the clock out, but T.A. McFumbles lost the ball on a vicious hit by Leroy Ambush, and their kicker knocked one in to give them a 24-22 win.

#1 duke, only the kind of shit that happened the other night against clemson happens in cameron, say what you want about dean getting the calls but he was not a puppetmaster towards the refs like K is, it just enrages me he thinks it's fair or part of the game that he can manipulate the referees, also K is big republican and dean was a big democrat

#2 wake basketball, this is mainly just based on the last few seasons, someone please name a more punked out team than chris paul, that ugly black guy with the small head who's name escapes me, and danelsuesus, plus their fans are jealous as hell

#3 maryland both sports, gary is just too damn high strung and it's just a fact they have the most asshole fans

Duke for me too. Coach K is by far, the best marketer on the planet, he has everyone believing he is a great coach with great values. I laugh at all of these awards. Bobby Knight gets so much mroe repsect from me, he's won the same amount of titles with 1/5 of K's talent, and he doesn't make any bones about his personality, complete honesty, and he doesn't care if you like or dislike him. Duke also has players that you hate, in addition to the coaches and assistant coaches (who could get a multi year deal with any motor oil for their hair, most notably Wojo and Quinn Snyder (in the 90s)). From Laettner to his gal pal Brain Davis, Marty______(can't remember last name), Greg Newton (who called Duncan soft!!!), Erik Meeks, Wojo, Collins, Duhon, Redick and Paulus (along with all others people already mentioned). And then you get to their student body, enough said. Everything about the university is deplorable to me.

With regards to UNC, they have had a few players who I thought were bad eggs in JR Reid, R. Wallace and McCants. However, most of their players don't get under my skin, and their coaches havn't bothered me either in Dean, Guthridge, Doh, and Roy. Doh was prabobly the closest to annoying me, and he had the worst record. Fact is, we all hate UNC's fans, but we all have a few friends that go/went to UNC, the same cannot be said for Duke.

I've also jumped on the I hate Maryland bandwagon recently. Those people are a poor man's Duke. There fans are as classless as it gets

growing up a kentucky fan (both parents alums, sister current student, and born and sorta grew up in lexington), then reforming to a state fan upon entering college

#1) Duke. (primarily with uk/duke, but then developing further with ncsu/duke)
#2) Maryland.
#3) UNC

I am amazed at the number of people on here are like, "UNC is ok but I hate Duke" Goes to show how much bandwagoning a color and Michael Jordan can create for your school. And I digress in an earlier statement saying Duke has ok talent. They do get good recruits but you have to remember that Duke basketball became good around '84, when UNC and NC State were the shit. That was all coaching. I am slightly pulling for Duke here even though I am a true State fan. I can't understand how, as Statefans, we can say there is anything good about Chapel Hill.

Also added to the Hate list, Notre Dame (and I'm Irish but I HATE the hype), Miami football (Buy your players and act like a bunch of retarded monkeys), Virginia Tech (same reason as Miami to a lesser degree), and anything Big East (I'm from the south, it's that simple).

My hate goes with VT first Maryland second UNC third. growing up in virginia i hated vt and all their talk about how great they were at football. most hokies didnt even know they had a basketball team before 3 weeks ago. they are with out a doubt the most bandwagon fans you will ever meet.

you are clearly not from north carolina, that title goes to unc fans, easily. most of them are fans in "basketball only." and when i say basketball only, i don't mean that they didn't know they had a football team, i mean they know it's bad, but it doesn't matter b/c they're not fans of unc football. they probably like usc or ohio state, or something just as dumb.

^that's so true......it seems as though a complete majority of "unc fans" only support basketball. Duke is not eliminated from this either because basically all duke fans claim basketball as the only worthwhile sport, simply because that is the only sport duke has where they are worth a damn.

Chapel hill and all unc fans are terrible. If you are going to associate yourself with a school and be a "fan" then that should mean you are a fan of every athletic team. That doesn't mean you have to go to the womens volleyball games or whatever but simply that you want your school to be successful in everything. unc is the #1 bandwagon school IMO.

I just don't understand this post. how in the HELL can ANYONE put anyone over UNC? I hate their frigging guts. I hate the school, i hate their alumni, I hate their fans, I hate the campus....and for those who stick up for the place..they truly don't date em at all. I bleed red and white. I've said this time and time again that people from out of state generally don't really dislike UNC because they aren't a factor nationally in terms of the fans and I've never seen the things that people say about them. I didn't grow up having to listen to them and I don't work in North Carolina now and put up with them. They don't have many fans who are reverse transplants (new phrase), especially in the Northeast (I'm guessing the majority of out of staters at NCSU are from the Northeast). The only ACC school with a fanbase in the Northeast is Duke, so they are the ones who get the dislike for a ton of people in that area, who are likely Big East fans...

Although to be honest I think I dislike Boston College the most... I wasn't disappointed in the least by last night.

Well that is still the South. I knew ONE kid who liked UNC growing up. It was because of their baseball team too, not even basketball. I knew a few Michigan frontrunnerans though..

The thing about UNC and Duke is that I've always hated UNC instinctively, simply for existing, whereas in my lifetime I've witnessed Duke become more and more obnoxious with each passing year. Duke is more aggressively irritating. I honestly can't remember the last incident that made me think "God, I hate UNC," but Duke does something like that every time I see them play. I guess what I'm saying is that UNC needs to step up their game. They need a new McCants or something.

Where I was from people who liked Duke usually liked them more out of respect for their ability and for Coach K and not so much because it was fashionable

I hate coach k, more than anything. I hate his mentor, I hate the puny, child-like statements he make in press conferences [from "I can't recruit against Dean Smith" to "I don't appreciate how they (Va. Tach players) acted"] the guys is a wuss and a cheat, and he was a couple losses from having another back surgery.
