Wow I'm a little surprised at the reaction here. I think the police went a little overboard making a panic or anything but definitely there is a responsibility of Americans and our companies not to cause fear and do stupid stupid stuff like a bomb hoax in a major city. They should get fined heavily so that it deters others from doing this sort of nonsense in the climate we are in today and the threat of terrorism not gone away we do need to be careful about not diverting the police's attention from more important matters. Think about this, what if they were looking for all of these devices and at the same time there were real terrorists enacting some plot and the police couldnt respond. Would it be funny then? 2/1/2007 12:46:41 PM |

I'll explain to you all why this happened in one word. The word means the absence of sense and diginity. It stands for total asshat-dom. It makes babies cry when uttered. It means the degrading of a once proud American movie industry. It makes the terrorists hate us.
That word?
BOSTON.

There are different types of bombs looking like different types of things if you are only looking for those really obvious ones than you're not going to find them. In fact, most bombs don't look like what you posted they are smaller and better disguised.
Bottom line is what they did is wrong because it was a hoax that costed millions of dollars. This is what happens when people care more about making money than their country. 2/1/2007 3:08:31 PM |

First of all its sad you cant engage in discussion without namecalling and personal attacks. secondly the fact that its a marketing campaign does not make it better it is still caused by greed and preying on America's fear of another 9/11. They cost millions of dollars and workhours not only of law enforcement officers who could have been monitering other threats but also of commuters who had to miss work because some greedy cartoon producer wanted more money2/1/2007 3:18:53 PM |

Guth I don't know what you're talking about.
Moron, that was just the impression I was getting. I might be wrong but from what I read it seemed like they intentionally placed them to resemble terrorism and they even said "Remember (some date I can't remember, I guess the day they were advertising for)." That's what I understood from following this story yesterday and today.
Furthermore, Why didn't they jsut tell the police when the panic started instead of allowing it to last so long. 2/1/2007 3:37:16 PM |

To Point guy:
I believe your car is a bomb. I'm going to call the cops right now. What's that? It's not? Why would you say such an incriminating thing like "my car is not a bomb"? If you were a terrorist of course you would say your car was not a bomb. I think you should be arrested for giving the appearance your car was a bomb to the police and for being uncooperative during interrogation. Better safe than sorry.
There's a difference between safety and paranoia.
Everyone watch The Daily Show tonight. I hope Jon Stewart has a lot of fun with this one.

It was not a hoax. Bottom line.
At best, they were electronic billboards in spaces that weren't permitted for advertising. At worst, they were electronic graffiti. Somewhere in between, it was artistic. It was not intended to cause a panic; it was intended to start a conversation or spark curiosity.
Quote : | "secondly the fact that its a marketing campaign does not make it better it is still caused by greed and preying on America's fear of another 9/11. Again, it was not intended to cause fear. And indeed, it did not do so in 9 other cities across the country for the last several weeks. The inept officials, public responders, and citizens who reported a "threat" cost the city millions of dollars through their inability to distinguish a Lite Brite from a bomb. Whoever's on a bomb squad and can't take a look at a barebones PCB with batteries and tell that there's no explosive material on it should be fired for incompetence.
And on a lighter note:
Quote : | "In a news conference, Rich told reporters he had advised his clients not to discuss the incident. Stevens and Berdovsky took the podium and said they were taking questions only about haircuts in the 1970s.
When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, "We're taking it very seriously." Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously." |

And it worked.
They made no assertions as to them being any sort of device other than a lite-brite sign.... SOme bus driver saw one and (SINCE A BUS DRIVER IS A BOMB EXPERT) called it in as a possibly dangerous electronic device.

No one attempted to trick the public into thinking that there was a bomb. The cops came up with that all by their brilliant selves.
