Wow I'm a little surprised at the reaction here. I think the police went a little overboard making a panic or anything but definitely there is a responsibility of Americans and our companies not to cause fear and do stupid stupid stuff like a bomb hoax in a major city. They should get fined heavily so that it deters others from doing this sort of nonsense in the climate we are in today and the threat of terrorism not gone away we do need to be careful about not diverting the police's attention from more important matters. Think about this, what if they were looking for all of these devices and at the same time there were real terrorists enacting some plot and the police couldnt respond. Would it be funny then?

they have been up in 9 other cities for over two weeks. Only Boston got the bomb scare.

I really don't know how this makes me feel. Because if a terrorists wanted to they could have placed actual bombs everywhere and left them for weeks before they blew. Really high security.

Lets take away more peoples rights to stop this

Yes, they've been up for a few weeks now.

Question: is this the first day that the Mooninite devices were put up in Boston or have they been up for 2+ weeks there also?

I'll explain to you all why this happened in one word. The word means the absence of sense and diginity. It stands for total asshat-dom. It makes babies cry when uttered. It means the degrading of a once proud American movie industry. It makes the terrorists hate us.

That word?

BOSTON.

The only American city out of a dozen or so and picked for advertisements, that cannot tell the difference between this:

^ Wow all I can say is I'm glad your not in charge of homeland security we would be dead.

There are different types of bombs looking like different types of things if you are only looking for those really obvious ones than you're not going to find them. In fact, most bombs don't look like what you posted they are smaller and better disguised.

Bottom line is what they did is wrong because it was a hoax that costed millions of dollars. This is what happens when people care more about making money than their country.

It only cost that much because a bunch of retards thought a piece of flat plastic with LEDs on it was a terrorism threat. There's no excuse for that short of being a complete idiot. Did you see the pictures of what these things look like? How in any way is it justified to call the bomb squad for something like that?

it wasnt a hoax you fucking dumbass, a hoax is planting a fake bomb and getting some deranged satisfaction from it. this is guerrilla marketing that has been around for weeks until some dumb fuck idiot (like you) decided that a pcb with some leds and a battery could be a bomb

im glad you arent in charge of homeland security or it would be even more bogged down from wasting time on stupid shit that doesnt make us safer than it already is

First of all its sad you cant engage in discussion without namecalling and personal attacks. secondly the fact that its a marketing campaign does not make it better it is still caused by greed and preying on America's fear of another 9/11. They cost millions of dollars and workhours not only of law enforcement officers who could have been monitering other threats but also of commuters who had to miss work because some greedy cartoon producer wanted more money

^^ Just in case you are real... They were not in any way trying to prey on anyone's fears. It was the idiot media and politicians that were fear mongering. These things had been up for a while before this whole crisis about them.

Guth I don't know what you're talking about.

Moron, that was just the impression I was getting. I might be wrong but from what I read it seemed like they intentionally placed them to resemble terrorism and they even said "Remember (some date I can't remember, I guess the day they were advertising for)." That's what I understood from following this story yesterday and today.

Furthermore, Why didn't they jsut tell the police when the panic started instead of allowing it to last so long.

They did tell the police, but the panic had already started.

And AFAIK, none of them had any dates on them, the pictures with the dates I think were photoshops.

To Point guy:

I believe your car is a bomb. I'm going to call the cops right now. What's that? It's not? Why would you say such an incriminating thing like "my car is not a bomb"? If you were a terrorist of course you would say your car was not a bomb. I think you should be arrested for giving the appearance your car was a bomb to the police and for being uncooperative during interrogation. Better safe than sorry.

There's a difference between safety and paranoia.

Everyone watch The Daily Show tonight. I hope Jon Stewart has a lot of fun with this one.

If you watched the "mastermimds" presser, you can clearly see they enjoy being quote "in the underground" and making a mockery of mainstream media events.

Seriously, this is what happens when you live in a constant state of fear. Sure you should live life with some cautions, but holy crap who took 2 weeks to notice blinking signs and then think they were bombs?

Freaking Bostonian idiots, thats who.

It was not a hoax. Bottom line.

At best, they were electronic billboards in spaces that weren't permitted for advertising. At worst, they were electronic graffiti. Somewhere in between, it was artistic. It was not intended to cause a panic; it was intended to start a conversation or spark curiosity.

Again, it was not intended to cause fear. And indeed, it did not do so in 9 other cities across the country for the last several weeks. The inept officials, public responders, and citizens who reported a "threat" cost the city millions of dollars through their inability to distinguish a Lite Brite from a bomb. Whoever's on a bomb squad and can't take a look at a barebones PCB with batteries and tell that there's no explosive material on it should be fired for incompetence.

And on a lighter note:

Quote :
"In a news conference, Rich told reporters he had advised his clients not to discuss the incident. Stevens and Berdovsky took the podium and said they were taking questions only about haircuts in the 1970s.

When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, "We're taking it very seriously." Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously."

You saw a photochopped image...that's what you are basing this on??????

They didn't say that..that was added to make fun of the people thinking it was a bomb...

ie...you

And it worked.

They made no assertions as to them being any sort of device other than a lite-brite sign.... SOme bus driver saw one and (SINCE A BUS DRIVER IS A BOMB EXPERT) called it in as a possibly dangerous electronic device.

GET YOUR STORY RIGHT. THE PORTLAND POLICE SAYS IT'S NOT EVEN ILLEGAL AND THEY HAVE LEFT THEM UP FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS WITHOUT INCIDENT> ARE YOU CLAIMING THEY ARE BAD POLICE SINCE THEY DIDN"T ACT LIKE COMPLETE MORONS???

"bomb hoax"

Quote :
"A hoax is an attempt to trick an audience into believing that something false is real. There is often some material object (e.g., snake oil) involved which is actually a forgery; however, it is possible to perpetrate a hoax by making only true statements using unfamiliar wording or context (see DHMO). Unlike a fraud or con (which usually has an audience of one or a few), which are made for illicit financial or material gain, a hoax is often perpetrated as a practical joke, to cause embarrassment, or to provoke social change by making people aware of something."

No one attempted to trick the public into thinking that there was a bomb. The cops came up with that all by their brilliant selves.
