I have to side with Duke here - I make close to $100k now (will with bonus)...I would guess I probably "feel" about $1k more a month than I did as an officer in the Navy, even thou I was just a little over $60k back then. It's amazing what tax breaks can do for you...when I was in San Diego I was getting ~$1500 a month tax free for housing, was a resident of Florida so I didn't pay state taxes, had no loans as the academy was free. Not to mention tax free deployments, being away from home a lot.

Looking back, I should have been a consultant right out of MBA. I figure in 6 months I'd probably have $20-30k in the bank...traveling and being reimbursed for everything kicks ass. I'll probably look at consulting after my time here at the depot...just wanted a working life where I didn't have to travel all the time for a couple of years.

i just got lucky with my job - I'm in somewhat of a niche job - heav statistics with strong marketing knowledge and some finance. it's not what I went to b-school expecting to do (planned on operations), but had an awesome teacher for decision sciences/forecasting/etc

anyway, been at the depot for about 7 months now. it's been an interesting ride to say the least (especially coming here from the military). we've had layoffs, tanking stock, rebounding stock, a CEO essentially fired, struggling thru a housing slump, etc. If I didn't absolutely love my job and have an awesome boss, I probably would have gotten scared off a couple months ago. working for a company that is in the Fortune 15 (we seem to move between 13 and 15 depending on what group you ask) has it's pluses and minuses. But it's a great resume builder, especially considering I want to eventually get my PhD and teach in an MBA program.

and partial is right...there are plenty of people who make less than I do coming out of B-School. It all depends on what you like to do. Hell, you could bank a couple hundy doing investment banking, but you'd have close to no life on the weekends and certainly none on weekdays.

Yes you can, Pat. Easily. Archstone has some nice 1 BR for like $2100-$2400/month (after my mba i'm still wanting to move to manhattan so I keep tabs). If you can't afford $2100 for rent + $400-$500 for all utils + $300 for insurances (no car) on a 100k salary you are really throwing a ton of money away. Even if your monthly expenses came out ~$5k a month that's still 40k extra...

Well, at least in part, the 50k thread was gross so I just assumed people were talking about grossing 100k here.

I live in an area of the country that is equally as expensive as NYC (Bay Area) and work with a few people who live comfortably in downtown SF in a $2.5k/month 1BR apartment on $85k/yr net though fwiw.

I ain't gonna lie, it irks me a teeny amount (only a teeny amount) knowing people in sales make so much money for such little brain power they put in to it.

right - so the difference is that the thread is about making 100k - which is almost always talked about in terms of gross pay

whereas you are talking about spending money - which is never talked about in pre-tax dollars

i put a lot more brain power into my job because i have to think for all these superintendents because they apparently don't learn in college how to finish a house. Some sales positions do not require massive brain power, but mine does.

^^ I'm a moron.. I was working on some stuff at work while I was typing and pretty much reversed everything I was trying to say since I wasn't thinking.

Just pretend I didn't post anything in this thread.. though it is completely possible to comfortably live in Manhattan on a 100k salary.

Like I said. I was in a conference call and wasn't paying attention hardly at all when I posted that. I had just read a post in the 50k thread (a few down) about people who net 50k and had 100k net income in my mind (even though what I typed was wrong).

Still there are plenty of people who can live off of a 100k salary in Manhattan or in San Francisco, both safely and comfortably.

I can't find any 1 bdrm apts in Manhattan for less than $1500 below 100th st, and I'd rather stay in Queens than live that high up. Plus for that $1500/month you only get around 400-600sq ft.

Looks like I'll be having a roommate till I make $100k

you don't need 100k to afford 1500 a month

at 75K you take home around 4K a month, 1500 is very doable

4K * 12 months = 48k

48k/75k = 36%

36% is a pretty high fucking tax rate, I claim 2 and never pay more than about 32%
