-evans looked solid, burke and beck not so much, though beck can launch the ball -our secondary can't catch for shit -the backs (baker, brown, eugene) were either really good (no surprise there) or we have no run defense -o-line was much improved -new kicker is solid, not as much distance as deraney (came up short from 54), but he's aight 4/14/2007 5:56:24 PM |

I wouldn't even call Evans "solid"--he improved a lot in the 2nd half (including that game-winning drive), but he made some really questionable decisions all afternoon. Beck does indeed have a cannon...it just went to the D as much as to the receivers.
Pierson was nailing 50+ yard FGs prior to the game with distance to spare.
Eugene had the best day of anyone...maybe it's because of our linebackers, but he got himself out into the open plenty of times. 4/14/2007 6:03:10 PM |

it's surprising to me that evans is leading for the starting job, but he definitely is. beck looked alright, but made some bad decisions. burke looked just plain bad.
it's down to two, probably. i doubt burke is still in the running after this.
and jamelle eugene looked just great. 4/14/2007 6:15:45 PM |

The thing to keep in mind with our QBs is that they've all only had a few weeks to get into this offense. Hopefully we'll see some major improvements in the fall. 4/14/2007 6:30:48 PM |

Czajkowski would appear to be the starter, and I think Franklin is the backup.
Pierson was just out there before the game kicking in to the north endzone and looking great.
Quote : | "yeah he looked great both times he fumbled the ball huh?" |
Yeah, that first fumble (that negated a huge run) was a killer. Not saying he's perfect, but the guy pulled off more big plays than either Brown or Baker, while coming in as a backup.4/14/2007 6:34:54 PM |

I thought Evans looked pretty good out there today. He was scrambling and making some good throws. He also didn't seem to force it too much. He threw for 2 touchdowns with around 3:00 to go to win it. Beck and Burke didn't really seem very comfortable and threw a lot of errant passes.
Evans definitely seems to have the starting position at this point but the other 2 QBs really need more time in the offense for fair judgement. 4/14/2007 6:43:53 PM |

Czajowski or whatever his name is was kicking 50+ yarders with ease during warm ups and I think our punter is going to have a big leg, his punts had AMAZING hang time.
Everyone has pretty much covered the RBs and QBs but if you watched Darrell Blackmon’s route running it reminded me of a young T. Holt. at least 2 times he put a move on #24 that made him look silly. One of those was the TD throw by Evans with under 5 to play.
I hope our RBs are that good and our Def isn’t that bad! did like the aggressiveness from the secondary, no more sitting back and waiting to just hit people instead they went for the ball AND the hit.
QBs should have had a few more picks, some easy dropped balls by the secondary. I liked the play calling too, not gimmicky, no dink and dunk swing passes, and not too much running up the middle.
I loved the fact that TOB brought 300+ old players to the university and plans on having an Annual NC State Football Reunion. That is nothing but positive. 4/14/2007 6:51:49 PM |

personally, i could give a shit how fast he is or how good his moves are if he can't hang on to the ball when he is hit
Quote : | "Not saying he's perfect, but the guy pulled off more big plays than either Brown or Baker, while coming in as a backup." |
I wouldn't really consider that he cane in as a "backup". He had the most carries of on the Red team. Kid is great in the open when he can use his speed, but doesn't get anywhere in traffic. Baker was a beast out here today with lots of yardage after contact. Granted he was running against the second team D.
^some of the diff in the secondary is they are playing more zone

Offense
QB Evans showed his experience today...he made some dumb plays and some smart ones as well...seems really poised and almost better suited on the run. Starter at this point with a long ways to go. Kid has heart and seems to be the behind the scenes leader of the offense. Beck doesnt seem comfortable yet with our line, doesnt look good on the run and is indeed a pocket passer. Big boy with a big time arm...just needs the experience and game play to get his reads down and hopefully will improve, seems to have potential to be the starter just looked uptight and nervous. Burke really thought burke was gonna impress me again today. I was let down. He seemed to know where to throw it and who was open just didnt have the arm behind it or the accuracy as the others. maybe he was nervous maybe he hasnt gotten nearly as much play as the other boys but needs to really work on his accuracy and reads. Seems to still have alot of growth left. Polk not too much to say here, did an ok job but nothing really outstanding. throws were on time and in place just didnt take any big plays and make a few easy mistakes.
RBs our runnin game should be our forte on offense this year without doubt Brown looks like he gained alot of muscle over the winter. he is HUGE now. Still just as good of an outside threat as there is in College. i think given a good line this kid can really do big things. Looked good out in the flats as well with accurate and timely catches and turns. Really lookin forward to him this year Baker same as stated above but seems to be our up the middle guy. As always he was running hard and downhill cant wait to see what this tandem can do. Eugene was that Willy Parker out there? Kid showed us the future today really had some nice cuts and runs with alotttttt of improvement since last year. seems to know how to read the plays and the tacklers...alot of upside here just needs to gain a pound here or there to be a good up the middle gritty power runner.
Ant Hill (TE) totally different attitude this year...seems to respect the routes and actually want to CATCH the ball. Looked really good and should be one of our biggest passing threats in the under routes. Blocking for pass protection needs to improve.
WR Blackman Will end up being our greatest WR this year. Showed his speed and ability today and had the poise on some of those over the middle that others stay away from for fear of the big hit. Dunlap Definitely has his own play in 'dunlaps corner.' Should be a good threat in the end zone and is a really BIG guy that hsould be clutch, dont think i have ever seen him drop a ball that was in his hands. lookin forward to it.
other guys--Def a young group of kids who have some potential and as long as they listen to the coaches and really work hard(I ddidnt see alot about em so not much to say)
Defense Either the running game is good or the Defensive line sucks.
Secondary looks REALLY REALLY good, like they are no longer gettin burned and actually reading stuff this time.
Defensive line needs work. Young guys and were gettin beat by the O line pretty bad but Young may be stellar.
(defense didnt have much to comment on, like I needed to comment on them anyways...they are normally pretty good hope they keep up the tradition.)
and absolutely LOVED the Alumni being there, great move and really makes them seem appreciated.
more to come, im DJing right now so hard to remember it all and type at the same time, more to come later when i get a chance to sit down and think about the D.

Quote : | " With Several Strong Showings, O'Brien Focuses on Whole Wolfpack Posted: Today at 5:33 p.m. Updated: Today at 9:17 p.m.
RALEIGH, N.C. — Tom O'Brien worked to keep the focus on his team - not individuals - during his first spring at North Carolina State. Performances like these during Saturday's Red-White spring game make it hard to single out any one player. Three running backs surpassed 100 yards rushing, and quarterback Daniel Evans threw two of his three touchdowns to Darrell Blackman in the final three minutes of the Red team's 35-31 win. They gave the former Boston College coach a successful conclusion to his first set of spring drills with the Wolfpack. "We had fun out there today," said Evans, who was joined by the team's top three returning receivers on the victorious Red team. "I probably threw a couple balls I'd like back. They dropped an interception and I fumbled a snap, but we'll keep working on that." Jamelle Eugene had 168 yards on 15 carries, Toney Baker had 163 yards on 23 attempts and Andre Brown had 112 yards while splitting time between both teams. "Jamelle was real good," Baker said. "All three of us can run the ball well. We can all make plays." O'Brien went 75-45 in 10 seasons at Boston College, leading the Eagles to eight straight bowl games, and left for North Carolina State to replace the fired Chuck Amato. One of the top objectives this spring for the Wolfpack was to adjust to O'Brien's disciplined, no-frills style. The offense features multiple formations that O'Brien says incorporates everything shy of the wishbone, while the defense features more zone coverage than the Wolfpack played under Amato. "Maybe I'll back off my recent statement about not running the wishbone with these three backs," O'Brien said with a smile. Evans - who threw the winning touchdown in the final moments against O'Brien's Eagles back in September - was 20-of-34 for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Blackman with a 50-yard score with 2:52 left, then threw him the game-winner from 8 yards out with 16 seconds remaining. White team starting quarterback Justin Burke was 13-of-24 for 121 yards and a touchdown, but he threw three interceptions. Javon Walker picked off two of those passes. Nebraska transfer Harrison Beck split time with Burke in the first half before shifting to the Red team in the second half. Beck featured the strongest arm of any quarterback, but missed several deep attempts in going 7-for-26 for 116 yards and an interception that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Jimmaul Simmons. Beck hit Koyal George on a 75-yard pass play in which the ball traveled about 45 yards in the air. "We've got a lot of work to do," said O'Brien, who addressed the 14,800 fans in attendance over the public address system at halftime and following the game. "It's an ongoing process. Quarterback is a decision-making position, and whoever makes the best decisions is the starting process." " |
