If they don't get someone good I'm gonna be pissed.

I wonder if Norm would make a lateral move to be OC of the chargers, to play with a great team and coach Phil again?

yea im afraid they have too, i saw espn had rated them at the end of the season as the team to beat next year...even with all that talent, a bad coach can still ruin that

They are the favorites to win the SB in vegas.

or were, not sure how this will affect that.

this is the gayest shit ever!

key chargers' losses thus far:
- the head coach
- the oc (dolphins hc)
- the dc (cowboys hc)
- the hb coach
- the lb coach (49er's dc)
- the te coach
- michael turner (lt's backup who more than held his own; averaged 6+ ypc)
- donnie edwards (leading tackler)
- shaun phillips (10 sacks despite missing a couple of games with an injury)
- kris deilman (experienced right guard, and probably the chargers' best linemen)
- terrence kiel (might be going to prison)

a couple of assistant coaches were also looted, and other less active players were let go. it'll be interesting to see how vegas reacts to marty being fired.

Everywhere I've read had them not pursuing Edwards in favor of retaining Phillips and Deilman.

Word has it they're gonna hire Chuck Amato for head coach, Jeff Bowden for OC and John Bunting for DC.....but that's just the word on the street

That was dumb by the chargers. They can't even hire within there organization now. Have to replace the OC DC and now Head coach. What were they thinking?? try to keep the coach's guys.

whatever coaches they get are walking into a very good situation IMO. Not very often you have such a high talent level team that has 5-6 coaches replaced

The Chargers will be fine. PRiv is at QB. State did fine while he was here, and obviously, he was the coach on the field. No sweat!

But yeah... stupid move by their organization.

they're letting him walk through free agency -- AJ tried to trade him this past off-season (wasn't happy that DE repeatedly wanted to rework his deal, apparently thought he was getting paid sufficiently)

can you back this up with some links? i know i read that talks may be breaking down with dielman, but haven't read about shaun (i'm out of the country so i've likely missed a lot, links would be appreciated)

on topic:
disappointed to hear this when i woke up this morning (especially after reading how shocked LT and rest of team was at the decision as well) -- will reserve judgment 'til i see what AJ has up his sleeve (surely he has something planned, right?!?)

Donnie Edwards is gone. AJ Smith said as much.

They are trying to re-sign Dielman.

Phillips and Turner are restricted free-agents, so the Chargers can hold onto at least 1 of them for another year.

Losing Terrance Kiel is addition by subtraction. A good strong safety has to be the first priority in the offseason. 2nd priority is a WR who can catch the ball.

roberta,

aj has until march 1st to resign the ufa before they hit the market, so technically speaking, they're not losses yet.

aj is quoted as saying he'd like to resign shaun phillips. aj has also said he'll be looking at the draft to be the primary source of restocking the chargers due to the extra picks the chargers will have. aj is also widely known to be cheap and stubborn. many chargers fans are worried that he hasn't resigned yet (judging by the chargers.com, signonsandiego.com, glorifythepast.com, and bolttalk.com). i admit that it's premature to say phillips is a loss at this point, but i personally don't think aj and he will come to terms.

as for dielman, aj hasn't really said anything about him. i think his disinterest is what concerns the paranoid fanbase the most. as noted, aj is going to be looking forward to the draft. he's probably not going to match dielman's asking price. he certainly won't resign both phillips and dielman for what they could potentially get on the market.

i don't think anyone would deny that michael turner is about as good as gone. and you're already aware of donnie edward's situation.

^ thanks, didn't mean to sound offensive -- i was just worried i had missed something concrete

i think shaun phillips will be back (nothing to back that up, perhaps just wishful thinking)

dielman doesn't look so good

i agree that turner's as good as gone (hopefully for another slew of draft picks)

well for one, i don't typically look at who posted the thread. just the title.

and i'm pretty surprised they would fire him after the season they had. best record in the AFC. obviously they are going to be disappointed with the outcome, but rivers was injured and wouldnt have been able to keep playing anyway. i think it's a big mistake to let him go.

I've been a season ticket holder for a couple years now.

Same with Roberta.

I'm sure there are others in this thread who have been cheering for the Chargers since before they got really good.

PS I gotta believe that AJ Smith knows what he's doing. He's no Lee Fowler, so I'm sure they have a short list of candidates who sincerely want the job.

In addition, while USC head coach Pete Carroll's name has been hot, team sources contend he is not a viable option at this point.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinater Norv Turner could also be a candidate, as well as Seattle asstistant head Jim Mora.

I'd be happy with either Rivera or Ryan, although Rivers might benefit from a more offensive-minded coach.

Speculation is that Rivera may only be getting his interview because of the Rooney rule, and that Ryan and Gibbs are the front-runners.

With the kind of talent they have on offense, it shouldn't matter whether the head coach is offensive or defensive minded, as long as he isn't super conservative.

I just hope they hire a good OC. Still hoping they can lure Chow away, or perhaps steal Mike Martz from Detroit (just not as HC).

Pete Carrol wants total control of a franchise. AJ Smith won't relinquish any control over the franchise. That's not happening in a million years, and if it did it would end in disaster.

Marty promoted Shelmon, the RB's coach, to OC. I wasn't ecstatic about that move, because they guy has no play-calling experience.

Maybe the new coach will bring in an OC.

rivers not only got me to follow the chargers, but i started watching the nfl again. i wouldn't consider myself a hardcore chargers fan, but i've invested a decent bit. they're currently my favorite nfl team, but that could easily change if/when rivers leaves. i'll probably always root for the chargers to some degree.

For God's sake let me be the OC.

Fermata's playbook:
Toss left to LT
Toss right to LT
Bubble screen
Curls
Draw play
LT option throw

That will get you to the playoffs. It's not that hard.

God damn you people are obtuse. Schottenheimer would have kept his job if he hadn't lost both coordinators to HC positions, even with the rift he had with AJ Smith. He couldn't stop those coordinators from interviewing for Head Coaching positions.

The fuck you gonna do to stop a guy getting promoted?

Meanwhile, the Chargers did what they had to do. The coaching staff that got them a 14-2 season was GONE. Do you keep old Marty Can't-win when the guys who got him to where he is aren't around anymore?

Hell no.

are you actually suggesting marty was fired because he failed to get his co-workers paid more?

and also suggesting it makes sense to fire the last guy on your staff, just because hell everybody else left too?

i guess i'm obtuse because i sure don't understand that

^ yeah i think i read your post totally wrong; you weren't actually blaming marty for dudes leaving, but saying it's why he got canned (the "we don't want to lose his coordinators" motivation was gone)

but they should have grown some balls and:
A) given him a longer-term contract so he wouldn't be a lame duck (even indy won eventually),
B) fired him immediately and promoted cameron or phillips, or
C) paid the coordinators more on the spot instead of letting them walk out the door, if spanos and smith thought they (and not schotty) meant so much to the team's 14-2 success

Marty should have been fired the week after his 5th(?) consecutive playoff loss. As it was, he was a lame duck with 1 year left on his contract, and everybody knew it. He wouldn't even sign the 1 year extension they offered.

His coordinators bolted like rats jumping off a sinking ship.

The final straw was when Marty tried to sign his brother Kurt Schottenheimer to be a coordinator. AJ Smith said "fuck no", and Spanos decided to clean house.
