I guess I always saw the Northern Ireland conflict as a nationalist one: Irish who wanted to rejoin the motherland versus Irish who wanted to stay under British dominion. Fair enough though, I'll drop the point.

People in general with a strongly held belief enjoy "fucking up" the general population of those they oppose. Religion, nationalism, ideology; as I like to say, people don't need much of an excuse to distinguish themselves from "others" and go about killing them.
