I think Raleigh Music Academy rejected me. I called them 2 weeks ago about learning flamenco and they said they'd get their teacher to call me back in a day or two.
and I'm trying to learn this song:

that video sucks. you should learn on your own instead of hoping for instructors to help you. I never got lucky to have any guidance and I survived. 6/25/2007 7:18:57 PM |

Nunez is so freaking good. The tremolo on that is insane and then he kicks it into high gear.

This is an excellent video on learning some basic flamenco styles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBO73s_-z4U
What's weird is that I was actually starting to do those "modified A scales" before I'd seen that video. I discovered them while plucking through on the frets and thought they sounded nice.

You've been playing flamenco guitar or another style? 7/21/2007 7:59:13 PM |

just guitar in general, if i picked a style, i guess its just blues/rock type of stuff. recently i've been trying to get into jazz, but its hard to break out of the blues/rock mold. 7/21/2007 8:02:36 PM |

You must be pretty good having played 15 years. How hard is it to adapt to another style? 7/21/2007 9:02:40 PM |

for me its tough. you have to take a new approach to phrasing, note choice, and rhythm. for example, i just learned two positions of the mixolydian mode, and now i'm like "ok, now what?" everything just sounds like a poorly played scale. i understand the theory of playing around chord shapes, but the execution is lacking. the most common progression is ii-V-I, but not just regular major or minor chords, but fancy pants jazzy sounding variations, which are cool, just takes some time getting the hang of grabbing them consistently and cleanly. having a small scale guitar and being able to stretch 5 or 6 frets helps, sometimes. and also a lot of jazz tends to be in an odd meter, like 5/4 or something. do if you're playing the rhythm chords, you have to really count to keep up.
switching from country-ish to rock to blues isn't that hard, its really all the same, and most songs are either 4/4 or 6/8. they're basically I-IV-V progressions so soloing is pretty straightforward.
even though i've been playing for a long time, i don't consider myself good. but its all relative, so who knows.

So, "Music & Arts Center" at Crossroads has a flamenco guitar teacher. $100 per month for 1 lesson a week. Seems like a good deal. The guy is supposed to be amazing too, apparently he won some award that's given out to flamenco guitarists. I'm probably going to get lessons. 8/8/2007 11:39:53 PM |
